I had many requests from viewers who want to learn more about small bolt action rifles. In this video we do just that while comparing the Kurz Mauser, CZ 527, Kimber Adirondack, and the BSA Hunter. The regular size Mauser action on the table will make it easy to see what I mean by "small actions". Be sure to follow the links below for more USOG content and/or to support my channel. As always, thank you!

I was at the Holland & Holland boutique in Manhattan back probably seven years ago. They saw my love of what I was seeing and the salesmen started to pull out guns for me to check out. One was a short Mauser in .250-3000. It had .250-3000 beautifully scrolled across the receiver.

On a original Mauser sporting rifle they have their own dedicated serial numbers as well it’s well worth getting John Speeds book on the Mauser spotters . BTY that’s one sweet. 300 Mauser,

I have a CZ 527 in 7.62x39mm. I like it for using the Tula 154 grain bullet (oddly the same bore diameter and weight as the 7.62x54Rmm cartridge). Rather a low end .30 Winchester Center Fire. No other short cartridges so that's the only mini action I have.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns So far, I am impressed with CZ's quality of craftsmanship in metal, wood and fitting it all together and their service. And I rather like the thought this is a rifle one can carry most of the day (and I'm older than I used to was) and still has adequate power for what I expect. Thank you for the reply and the vindication.

Thank you for the video! My complaint with the 350 Legend is their use of a proprietary case vs using the 5.56/.223 parent case. I have been very impressed with my friend’s 450 Bushmaster. I have shot it out to 300m.

Now look, you made me want a BSA Micro Mauser I gotta turn off my notifications before I go broke lol. Interesting stuff as always, I am not a Mauser purist though and there are alot of cool shorter push feed bolt guns becoming popular as well. Still not as short as a #1 or a T/C though. I would love to see a video on some of the new titanium actions if you have anything to say about them. As an avid hunter I think your right that you will see more small petite format guns become popular as they are so much easier to handle in the field. I just hope that some of them have real walnut stocks with some hand checkering. Another great video as always.

Such neat rifles and the bluing on that BSA really shines. I think you are right that smaller action sizes are going to increase in popularity. This to me is due in no small part to the popularity of .223 Remington along with its negligible recoil. As a sidenote to your use of "British" instead of "Birmingham" I once thought the Browning Hi-Power I have was a 1911. What makes it even worse is that I had a 1911 next to it as well so I really had no excuse for being that far off. While just poking around the net I came across a pair of very interesting firearms for sale that I think you would enjoy reading about (the link is below). I really enjoyed how the first Model 70 wasn't given to a President or other person of note, or hidden away by Winchester, but instead was allowed to make its way to a random rifleman who would hunt with it for decades. In a sense just about any other way would not have been befitting of the Rifleman's Rifle. sportsmanslegacy.com/firearm/winchester-pre-64-model-70-serial-number-1-serial-number-2/

Main reason on why Winchester came out with this new 350 Legend caliber is for these mid west states like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana etc.... that was only shotgun or muzzle loader for deer hunting. Now the past 3 to 5 years now, these hunting sections of these states has now pass new laws and now allowed deer hunters to use 357 mag, 41 mag, 44 mag, 350 legend, 450 Bushmaster, 460 S&W, 500 S&W, 375 Win, 444 Marlin, 45-70, think I named them all. If I did not name them all I am sure someone will correct me on it. They made these laws all have to be straight wall cartridges.

@UnitedStatesOfGuns 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks and I have a Legend arriving soon - I like the idea of the cartridge - even if a main purpose was to capture a good part of the straight wall states market. I'll know more after I have a chance to shoot the rifle a bit.

I always assumed the turn of the century firearms makers found themselves in uncharted waters concerning the use of Nitro vs black powder. They certainly knew the new stuff could blow a typical wire twist barrel to tatters. So they figured better safe than sorry. Edison blew half his engineering building away trying to produce a combustion engine that ran on this new hi powered propellent. Even Kerosene was viewed as a potentially dangerous fuel . The byproduct of its refinery was pumped directly into the Great Lakes for it was so violent nothing could control a wast product as volatile as Gasoline. Then another thing caught the eye of a savy. Chemical engineer in Bell , just up river from Nitro . The river refused to freeze where the run off of the brine plant drained. He collected some of this trash run off and boom 💥Antifreeze was discovered! Ureaka ! .

Your BSA rifle may possibly have come from Herters back in the old days. They had some rifles that were made by BSA. One was the J9 and the other was the U9. I do have a question for you about Mauser actions. Do you have or have you ever seen a Brevex Mauser action. I read some where that is the only Mauser action that will accept the very large cases like the .505 Gibbs. Just wondered if you know anything about them. Thanks for another good video sir!
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike - I had a couple of the Brevex - made in France from memory - fine actions; excellent steel and long enough for just about anything. I think there were 505s made on Mauser 98s - they just open the action up to accommodate the big round. Some people don't like that but as you know, Mausers lock at the front so the reast of the action just holds th bolt etc... I guess if you can find a Brevex it is worth it for the extra room. As for the BSA - this one is a BSA - but you are correct - Herters did market some of them. Thanks for watching and for your note!

Wow, thanks for sharing this with us! Always enjoy your videos! Birmingham Small Arms...rather reminds me of the several different acronyms for 'MG bgt' that I’ve been told, (I’ve got the same car that I’ve had since I was in High School even though I can no longer drive it). So, I’m ashamed that I haven’t found a new caregiver for my ‘67 MG bgt since my accident, but the right person will come along. If we, (in Canada), end up losing our semiautomatic rifles, I’ll have to get an Anschütz Fortner or an Izhmash 7-2/7-3/7-4-all models of which aren’t easily found. That’ll be the time to sell the old car...and it’s no longer in pristine condition. Oh...it’s a stressful time to be a Canadian firearms owner!

USOG Merry/Happy Christmas/Holidays, & Season’s Greetings, Mike. My car is in its original British Racing Green, after I had it first 'restored'. The body had the original green + white + (Honda) red all stripped off before the respray & the engine was rebuilt-then painted as per factory specs, (boring red, but I wanted to go back to its original state). It was the last year of the all metal dashboard, & has electric overdrive in gears #3 & 4. I had tons of fun in that car, & thought it would be the death of me considering the lack of safety features available in 1967. It was during my job on ski patrol that I had my neck-breaking tumble...and I’m grateful that it happened to me instead of a little kid. Sorry for the long reply!

I like that BSA! The CZ might be better if it didn't have the extended magazine, easier to carry. RIA sells, or sold, a bolt action that is chambered in their .22TCM round, a .223 Kurtz if you will. It takes RIA's 1911 style double stack magazines from their pistol.
