I would buy it, if I had the money! If you are concerned about the sound, let me tell you a little secret that salesman usually use in order to sell the keyboards. The reality is that the speaker said used in demonstrating the keywords is very good, and this allows for the range the of the sound to be demonstrated more efficiently. So, if you want to buy it, make sure you buy a good set of speakers, so that you can enjoy it to the fullest.

Kurzweil works so hard on the sound of its instruments. I record live stages from my truck, occasionally unaware of what is being played, and Kurzweil is regularly fantastically good. It really is a blind test in these circumstances. Just amazingly good. So much DSP overhead is required to execute those crossfades and they are flawless, leaving no unhappy surprises for the player.

I would have liked to hear more synthesis. I remember playing a 61-key semi-weighted Kurzweil keyboard 10-20 years ago and the quality, polyphony, complexity and nuance of the synth sound were incredible; levels above anything by Roland, Yamaha, Korg, Casio, Kawai et al. The sounds were expressive and infinitely playable, as if they had been designed by a player as well as a programmer. It used to puzzle me why keyboard manufacturers were concentrating on more and more realistic emulations of real instruments. I mean, I appreciate a portable grand piano, Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ and orchestral accompaniment and, I guess, if one is writing full arrangements, all the other hyper-realistic solo instruments are handy. However, nothing will ever compare to real instruments, especially solo instruments. I would rather record a real bass, guitar and brass, and drums if possible. However, if one looks at the preset names of the early synthesizers, it becomes clear that the programmers were always trying to emulate real instruments, but the technological limits actually created entirely new instruments. There was no option to focus on realistic instruments, hence the creativity went into original synth sounds. If one compares the patches on an old Oberheim, Sequential Circuits, Moog, Arp, Yamaha etc. with today's synth patches, I think one will notice that today's patches are less designed for performance and more for instant sonic effect, less for players and more for producers. The Kurzweil K2700 is so powerful it should be demonstrating the absolute pinnacle of synthesis types and performance. Every Roland drum machine is opinionated and has effectively been the backdrop to every musical era for decades. Kurzweil should be matching this in opinionated synthesis for the performer. It's not enough to just regurgitate the same inoffensive pads and leads.
@billhenley23322 жыл бұрын
I've now had my K2700 for approximately 6 weeks. If it's synthesis you're in then sit down, strap in, and prepare for the latest version of V.A.S.T.. It's not for the synthesis newbie. It's complex and, from what I can tell thus far, limitless. Nothing else is even close.

Kurzweil has still the best orchestral sounds of all workstations. Roland Fantom may be a beast when it comes to synth voices, retro-stuff from the 80´s and emulation of the company´s best selling synths back in the days The Montage is a very great instrument for playing FM sounds and manipulating them in real time and has some of the best natural instruments like brass, woodwind and stuff like that The Kronos is a beast because of the 9 independent enginges But Kurzweil blews everything out of the water when it comes to orchestral sounds, ensembles or voicings for scoring big motives
@Screaming-Trees2 жыл бұрын
Kurzweil also has a fully backwards compatible FM engine (Basically a DX7) which you can program on its own or as blocks in VAST. I would also submit that Kurzweil's greatest strength is as a digital synth. Not just in terms of features but it is one of the best sounding digital synths out there. It's got its own sound.

@Screaming-Trees2 жыл бұрын
@@oscar_sheen Kurzweil quality control is every bit as good as Nord. I bought my Pc3k8 in 2010 and it's as good today as it was when I bought it. Also, it's made in Korea. The PC4 is plastic and I don't like it as much (the keybed isn't as nice as the TP40L they put in the PC3k but it's fine). The 2700 however is metal with the same key bed as the PC3K8 so I expect that will be on par. The downside of metal though is weight. But Nord doesn't have VAST. Nor does it sound like Kurzweil either. So if you need that Nord won't cut it.

@@oscar_sheen Yep I can get behind that. Off shoring was a disaster. It is only about margins for capital by engineering a race to the bottom for labour and zero consequences for repatriating those margins. I only bring it up because it seemed you were making a qualitative differentiation argument and there is very little difference between Nord and Kurzweil in this sense. They both use Fatar keyboards for example (there aren't that many keyboard manufacturers around these days). If they are going to charge premium prices though they should really consider bringing manufacturing back to Boston. Chinese manufacturing is so ubiquitous and pervasive now that I'll bet even Nord has parts inside that are shipped out of there (can't say for sure but it's a reasonable suspicion). It's sad that we've allowed this to happen and no one makes anything locally anymore.

I have some questions, if by any chance someone could answer : How do I get the keyboard velocity to control the filter cutoff on synth sounds ? I play with both hands and feet, so I can't afford to use a fader or a CC pedal. Is there a multi that transform all the controllers into a mixing desk with 9 programs ? There are multi with 4 faders assigned, but when I tried to add volume control and on/off on the button, I had so many conflicts with other midi assignation. Is it possible to create a custom velocity curve ? And have velocity curve for each program ? I've a hard time playing Rhodes sounds and piano sounds with the same velocity curve. The keybed is good, but the way it interacts with different categories of sound should be tuned. And last but not least, editing fx is a nightmare for me. Too many menu diving, and when I scroll through fx chain, it gets so laggy. Are there shorcuts ?

With equipment like this why do i see so many players bit the living daylights out of a keyboard when played normally it does the sound justice when played with so care as to the music itself. I have an older keyboard by Kurzweil a PC7 that has a lifetime of sound if treated with respect plus it keeps the keyboard in tip top condition. There is so much work gone into building these that to me they are something to respect and with the opsional tower programme there are thousands of sounds at your finger tips. I use a sigle post support that have V shaped base to it so it allows for a much beter positioning of an over the top keyboard which gives a lot more room for changing hands plus all the cables can run down the tubular structure for tidy looking stage use plus offer the best support to both keyboards. I have looked and kistened to this keyboard and although way out of my ability to buy, has certainly gone onto my lotto wish list! Really is great bit od gear to have!!!!!!

I asked them to consider following Korg and Roland's example, digitally archiving their old hardware as VST plugins. Ray Kurzweil is one of the leaders of digitally preserving human life, I bet he would advocate for making software if he was still running everything.

Those virtual instruments are amazing, especially in the studio. For playing live they’re good, but can be cumbersome in some ways. With tens of thousands of sounds across who knows how many different plugins, it’s difficult to navigate spontaneously on your laptop if you want a patch on a plugin that wasn’t already loaded. By the time you do all that, you’ve missed your moment. Not to mention the amount of ram and cpu you’d have to eat up to load dozens of ‘just in case you get some spontaneous inspiration’ plugins. It’s way more simple and immediate when you’re playing a hardware synth for those situations. Lots of people just always preferred hardware workstations. If the sales were down that much, these companies wouldn’t waste their time and money developing them.

@@damonbennett5911 totally agree. Just wondering if sales are good enough to support all these workstations on the market. I suppose so or they wouldn't keep releasing them.
