This is originally a Malayalam movie with Mammootty essaying Rajni's role. Suffice to say, Rajni did well (much better than Shah Rukh in the hindi copy), but he could not hold a candle to Mammootty's performance. Not a fault of his--perhaps, Kamal could have done more justice (maybe not--kamal might have over-emoted). Regardless, it would be very difficult to come to the level of Mammooty in that scene--Mammooty was perfect in his dialogue delivery and emoting. It is when comparing with performances like this that we can see the real range of Mammootty.

Mammooty is my favorite actor.. Brilliant Brilliant actor. Watched all his movies for over 30 years... Rajni was never going to act as well as Mammooty. That said Mammooty is a touch below Kamal and its not such a bad thing, like somebody said, Tamil movies are more into emotions over Malayalam movies which are very real. Love both.

Give Peranbu to kamal, and he would perform brilliantly. But the emotions would be over-wrought. Mammootty's subtelty would be lost. This is something we watched in Kamal's drishyam remake as well. Kamal can learn from Mammootty the art (or rather craft?) of restrained emoting, an art he once had, and now it seems lost through disuse.
