In the Armenian Church, this hymn is sung during midnight mass on Maundy Thursday. It is usually sung solo by a female chorist from behind the altar to create a mystical atmosphere -- l used to be one myself!

Those guys were influenced by the folk music of these regions. Albeniz coming from Spain where the Umayyad caliphate operated giving a huge influence of Arabic musical forms and harmony (also why Latin music incorporates those same ideas as Spanish culture spread into the new world) and Debussy who attempting to find new sounds and textures looked to the 'orient' and found what he was looking for. This stuff is much older than 20th century music. That's the beauty of music, its all one big mish mash of influences. When you get someone like Tigran coming along though and he can combine so many genres together seamlessly it just becomes good music and nothing more. The 21st century is an amazing time to be a music listener as we've never been so privileged to have such amazing genre bending music at our disposal!

Do you know if Armenian songs often use quarter tones like in Arabic music? Obviously a piano can't play quarter tones, but is is used in singing or other instruments?

I was about to make a comment on that but you did it for me! I am a musical scholar on the origin of music theory, and a biblical scholar as well. You are 100% correct! I also write, play, and produce original music for soundtracks, documentaries, and for myself and others to enjoy. In the late 70's early 80's I recorded with many bands and produced for a few as well. I do not do many covers, I just have so many songs and ideas in my head. I have even done some work with local hip hop bands, they sometimes just need a beat and a few effect sounds to rap over. Music is international and now cosmic as well.
