KV-85 | Easy Prey?

The Kv-1 was a tank used by the Soviet Union in the early days of world war 2, it was better than anything Germany was fielding at the time, there were downsides, but for the time it was a good tank because the anti-tank guns Germany used were generally ineffective against its armour. And its 76.2mm was able to penetrate a lot of tanks, they also made another version of the KV-1 which is called the KV-1s, this was a variants of the KV-1 with less armour and a smaller turret to gain some mobility, but over the course of the war the Kv-1 became obsolete, being only able to penetrate enemy tanks at very close distances if they were lucky. So the soviets needed a new tank

I agree with your summation, it would have been a poor relation to the T-34/85, but I am sure ANY tank with the 85mm gun would be useful in the dark days of the war for Russia!

Yup that's correct, that's why the 85mm was in high demand

I think it was basically a stop gap design to get an 85mm gun into a tank. The T-34/85 was probably harder to design to the constraints of the chassis.

@@ianlarge9016 it was a stop gap tank to bridge the gap between the KV and IS tanks but honestly it was a bit unnecessary if you ask me😅 Intriguing tank design though. But it left a lot to be desired.

I have heard the claim the Turret was not the same as the IS 1....I don't know but would appreciate your view. The left side is claimed to be different. ???.

Hey, so do you remember who made this claim? I was looking at historical pictures of the KV-85 and the IS-1 and I could not see any (outside) difference, all the sources which normally are quite reliable also claim it to be the IS-85 (IS-1) Turret 🤔

One note, you said 85mm is powerful enough to penetrate panther frontally, this is definitely not true for the steeply sloped hull
