I experienced a system like this over ten years ago indoors - at extreme SPL no harshness, djs with drum n bass trying to clip very impressed.

Same SPL as JBL VRX900, but I have to say, these sound far, far better. There’s no comparison. You hear everything through these boxes. The real difference, to me, are the subwoofers. I’ve heard a JBL system with 3 VRX932LA and 3 VRX918S per side. It was loud, but not overly so. The VRXs themselves sounded harsh, grainy, and lacked midrange. There wasn’t even much bass, and I think the subs were maxed out to the point of distortion. On the other hand, I’ve heard a Kv2 audio system that was turned up even louder, and the bass was clean, punchy, low, and no frequency really stood out above another: the subs didn’t have the “tuned” sound that I hate. And to top it all off, the bass was loud enough to blur my vision. Subs were 4 of the single 18s and 2 of the double 15s per side, with 2 ES1.0 cabs flown above each sub cluster. The double 15s certainly added punch, they seem great for live bands. This was a DJ rig, and the 18s provided all the depth.

JBL sure have their fans, but in terms of their sound, I think the same as you. I really don't like them and don't get what the fuss is all about. Heard many speakers from the JBL lineup at Plasa 2023, and was stunned at how awful they sounded. Every speaker they played had a horrible harshness, and negligible low-end. Expensive firewood in my view, and I now see why so many riders say "no JBL".

How it sounds is what is important.

May look like 1980s speakers, but I'm pretty sure you'd like how they sound.
