Used to be the opposite way around. It was only until around the mid 90's to early 2000s where the worst most mundane music got rewarded. I think it had to do with the explosion of the internet and also the increase in illegal downloads. So music began to become a thing of personality/building a brand/image like Justin Bieber, instead of people who might not be the best looking, but made amazing music.
