A Comprehensive Specs comparison between the Kawasaki Ninja 400 and Yamaha YZF-R3.
The Extremely popular beginner sportbike from Kawasaki that is widely regarded as one of the best all rounders in the class, the Ninja 400. Up against Yamaha’s own little lightweight super sport that’s garnered a whole lotta love all around the world, the R3. If you’re looking at your first motorcycle or for an easy everyday sport bike you will not be able to escape the presence that these two hold in the category, and today we are putting them head to head in one epic showdown.
G’day I’m Kwackajack and welcome to another episode of the versus series! Today we are putting two titans of the beginner class under the magnifying glass for a detailed specs comparison to see just what the differences are and who comes out on top. We’ll be analysing the styling, claimed Engine & power specs, exhaust notes, Weight, Suspension & brakes, Fuel economy, features & price to see where they stack up. Having also owned the Ninja 400 and spent a lot of time around R3’s I’ll be adding in a little bit of my own personal experience with each in aswell. Now before we get started please do me a huge favour and give this video a like, and hit subscribe to join our awesome little community of moto enthusiasts!

After doing much thinking and research, I finally went with the R3. Reasons: 1. Actually sitting on both, I realized instantly that I did NOT like the extra fairing on the ninja. It felt fat, clunky, and too much for me personally. Despite it looking really good, I wasn’t a fan of the POV when I actually sat on it. 2. The R3 seems to be preferred by people who actually have a lot of experience riding motorcycles. I’m willing to give up just a little bit of power for an overall better engine/seating/experience 3. The looks of the R3 grew on me tremendously. The Ninja looks great don’t get me wrong, and it was the bike I was originally gonna get, but after months of looking at them, I realized just how good the R3 looks. 4. I’m only 185lbs. I’ve never ridden a motorcycle. I don’t think I’m going to stress too much about 70 CC’s. 5. The R3 dash looks better imo 6. I found a helluva deal (1200 miles on a 2019 Yamaha Blue) for $3,900. 7. The gold inverted fork on the Yamaha looks/feels very premium. 8. The wheels on the R3 are better looking imo. 9. The full coverage insurance on the R3 was $40/mo. The Ninja 400? $140/month. Massive difference. Verdict: I would have been very happy with either, but ultimately, I’m very glad I went with the R3 😊 let me know you guys opinions!

@@austinsilversmith8014 I just recently got the ninja 400 and I've been riding it daily for the past week. I've already put a couple hundred miles down on it and as a first bike, it's great. I've never been on the R3 myself, but a friend of mine who has experience on both a ninja and an R3 helped me choose the ninja. For me personally, the deciding factor was the rider position. the R3 has a much more aggressive, tucked in riding stance while with the Ninja, although you can still easily tuck in, has a more natural upright riding stance. Since I'm getting a bike for an every day vehicle (can't afford a car) I wanted one that would be most comfortable and as someone who's tall (6'0+) I felt like the tucked in stance would end up making my lower back sore over time. I definitely notice on the more longer rides on the highway where I'm tucked in, it can cause some discomfort so I'm glad I went with the Ninja because I can sit upright comfortably on it. There's a lot more factors that cause people to go either way, but that is the personal experience that I can confidently talk on. If you haven't seen it yet, Yammie Noob has a video comparing the two to each other and it's pretty good. Just note that while each bike has differences between them, they're not major differences and either way you go you'll have a blast. Good like on getting your license and stay safe out there when you do!

@@austinsilversmith8014 I have owned my R3 since 2015. The Ninja 400 is also a good bike - just buy the one you think looks best. Performance of Ninja 400 is better as the brakes. R3 has a better gearbox and feels a little more premium and has more nimble handling. Neither are perfect but both can be improved with a cartrige kit in the front, linear springs, and a better rear shock [but it's not necessary if you just want to commute. Both come with budget tyres. Changing to something like a diablo2, s22, or Road 5 makes a noticable difference.

I've sat on both to get an idea on what the ergonomics are like and the r3 immediately impressed me. It had more room to allow me to get into a tuck and the shape of the tank reminded me of previous sport bikes I've ridden; which as a function, to me, felt more natural to lock my knees on when braking or hanging off. I'm looking forward to riding one next track season. A lot of my friends have went to this class of bikes for racing and had nothing but positive things to say.

Having owned MANY many, er, many bikes, and, being a Kwak fan I would deffo take the Ninja 400. Among the bikes I've owned, one being a GPZ400R (smaller Jap import of the well known GPZ600R, but SILL a very capable bike in itself (only major differences between 400 & 600 being 400 had an Ally frame whereas the 600 had a Steel frame, CC difference, but surprisingly enough, only about a 15 MPH difference between the two)). And having owned a few Kwak twins, Kawasaki certainly know how to make solid, capable twin cylinder bikes (I had a blue and white 38BHP 1990 GPX250R too) It's a shame the new 4 cyl Ninja 250 is not more widely sold as THAT certainly looks to be a VERY DECENT bike for learners... 😎🇬🇧

I went with the Ninja, admittedly though, I have been a kawasaki fan since my older brother bought one back in the early 90's. My family are bike people, but with different likes. My father is a Royal Enfield fan, for example and was the one who forced me to look around at all options before purchasing. So, I did in fact look at the R3, at one point, but nothing I saw or tested, could turn my eye from the kawasaki ninja 400. In looks, feel and options. May I suggest, that if price is a problem, just barter! I picked up my brand new ninja krt 400, with 3 months rego for $8000, on the dot. Just saying that you don't know unless you try.

In terms of mechanical reliability they are both Japanese bikes and both bomb proof as a result. Shouldn't get any problems with either for thousands of miles if serviced on time and regularly. Warranty can differ depending on market sold in but I would wager they would both be the same number of years. They have to be competitive with each other or otherwise they'd lose sales.

@@bryanoliver5550 It's a cheap design using 5 friction plates - three of which are very thin in comparison to the main two. The YZF-R3 has less power but uses 6 friction plates - and doesn't have the wear factor of a slipper to worry about either. You can solve the issue with the Ninja - but it is expensive, time consuming, and voids warranty. Overall, there's just no reason to put a slipper clutch on a bike like this. That being said if you don't abuse the slipper, it should be fine for commuting and so on. But you wouldn't track it or ride it hard and expect 40k k's from it either.

I never knew about LAMS motorcycles. That probably saves a few lives every year. I always recommend to anyone who is thinking of buying his/her first motorcycle to buy an off road bike first. Pavement is like the sea - unforgiving. In Texas, a "motorcycle only" license is available (with parent approval) to riders who are 15 years old and pass the M/C safety and traffic/signs test and the actual riding (observed by DPS officer) test at the Department of Public Safety. But at 18 (or 16 with parent approval) we can get a license to drive a car or ride any motorcycle. (after passing all the written and driving and/or riding on the road tests.) Oh yeah, don't forget the fees. ... Always a fee.

Just an observation: I know that metric units of measure are 1/100(0) or *100(0) , making conversions easier than remembering how many ounces or in³ are in a gallon, etc. But watching this video, I have to wonder if when the metric system was created, did they just run out of words to use for measurement units?. What I mean is: The Ninja averages 24½ km/L, which is some really great Mileage(?) What was that? MILEAGE? How do you say that in metric? Metric has an extra word for "thousand." Is 24½ thousand meters more difficult to say than 24½ kilometers? I guess it takes more space and time to write it. What if we tried that? 57.6 "5,280" feet/128 ounces is some really great mileage. That would sound more awkward than 24½thousand meters/liter So kilometer is the word for 1,000 meters, just like mile is the word for 5,280 feet & gallon ... 128 ounces Of course, there still isn't a good word for "kilometerage" so the metric society has submitted to using "mileage." But WTF. I won't get into that if you don't ask me why "oz" is the abbreviation fore ounce. Ride Safe. Look Cool. (Not necessarily in that order!)

I think 1st timers on a motorcycle would appreciate buying yamaha r15 or honda cbr150 or suzuki gsxr150. considering newbies are content going 120km/hr top speed, and small bikes are lighter, in case they drop it

You would get ran over on a 150cc bike here in the US no to mention if you took that thing on the highway/freeway you would be blown off the road. Both these bikes would be perfect to use on highway 150cc's would be redlining begging to explode on the ride for long periods.

If that’s the listed dry weight then you need to understand how they come to that number. That is every single part minus grease, oil or gas so it’s misleading. If one has slightly more oil capacity and a larger fuel tank it can change the reality of it all. And honestly the only place a 9 lb difference would make is on the track for racing purposes. Weighing 9 lbs less is like me saying I lost weight but only a lb and you can’t see it or feel it. Neither one of these engines would really notice the difference all that much.
