In today's video we are going to try and figure out what is wrong with our Kwikee Steps on the Fleetwood Bounder Class A. They are stuck in the almost closed position. They just stopped working and nothing will make them go in or out.

I watched until Bear tried touching his shop magnet to it (1:35), went out and poked my magnetic switch with my shop magnet, and the step extended after being dead for days. Now it works with the door as well. Thanks, Bear!

YUP- That worked---tape a magnet to the bottom of the door and its fixed...Never knew if there was a magnet there or not but after checking Amazon, they do sell both products along with the Magnet..But the magnet I have works fine..Just the right size..I'll use some kind of command strip to attach it later..

Have identical problem. Your great video illustrated what I needed to do. Another thread mentioned that sometimes the motor binds and the motor needs to be un-mounted and re-mounted. I think that was your problem when you pulled out one bolt and it started working. I loosened the three motor mounting bolts, closed and opened door, steps worked, tightened three bolts, washed hands. Your video was very helpful to me.

Mine is working fine. But I wanted to watch this video to see how the steps actually work. Thanks, I now know all I need to know about the function and parts of the steps. Having seen that light underneath, I got another idea. I’m going to put an LED strip under each of the steps powered by that light. That should make it much easier to traverse the steps at night. If anyone else wants to do what I’m going to do, I would recommend carefully choosing a path For the wiring so that it doesn’t get bound or pinched in the mechanism.

Good vid. I have a Thor Hurricane 2016 29M with a step that won't retract....not even when you start the engine. Tomorrow I'll pull the little 2 wire connector and underrstand that I should get 11 - 12 something voltage. Not sure what you did with the 4 prong connectore to see if power got to there. My light is lit. Any help?

Great video. I had nearly the same thing happen. I got all three screws out but I decided to try power to it when it was disconnected from the gear box and it magically started working again. Reinstalled and everything is working. No parts needed.

In the spring I made sure that I lube/spray oil on all the parts. It was working fine until it was stuck in the out position. Reading/ watching what you did and finally someone brought up the magnet trick. I tried that and it work. I did notice a sticky tape on the bottom of the screen door. I wonder if there was supposed to be some type of magnet there. I found a little square magnet(1") on the fridge which holds our grandkids pictures and used black duck tape and taped it to the bottom of the door. Everything works now.. Thanks....

Check motor voltage first before hitting it with your wrench, also ground on frame can get rusty and light will go out with motor

While it did work for a few more weeks, I did eventually replace the motor. So keep that in mind. Once the motor was replaces there were no more problems.

So right on design. Sometimes gear strip. Turn gears 180. Good for a while. Also enclose the step components. All exposed. I live in NorthEast weather destroys everything.

Hi Bear, thanks for your videos. The retractable steps on my 2008 National Pacifica 40E Diesel Pusher just stopped working. I went over to where I store it, opened the door and I started to hear a Pop, Pop, Pop which is the motor running. However the steps won't go up or down. The steps are not bound up either. The steps are loose and will swing up and down as I push on them. Any ideas?

Seems like the pin or the gear is broken. it's on the end of the motor.

We have a 2019 Bounder and I have had to work on the step motor several times over the last year. The issue that I have found is that if you get in a hurry and come down the stairs before it is fully down, you will jam up the mechanism and it will not open or close. The 90 degree arm goes past center and then the electrical motor cannot power it back. By taking out the bolts or even loosening them it takes the pressure off of the gears and then the motor can engage. The other issue I had was a small traffic cone was sitting in our lane on a busy two lane road and I couldn't avoid it. It was thrown up into the bottom of the step by the front tire and it jammed the gears up. I had to loosen the 3 mounting bolts and it once again started working. This can be resolved by adjusting the rubber stops so the step cannot extend up with pressure, but it will not resolve the issue with putting pressure on the step before it is fully down and locked. For this I need to train my family to wait another couple of seconds :)

Do you gave an updated link for the controller? My steps have power and they click when you open/close the door or out a magnetic next to the door switch but do not move. The motor is very warm to the touch but nothing moves. Any suggestions or way to tell if it is the controller vs the motor? Thank you!

As flakey as these steps are on every RV, I would like to see a simple mechanical lever or crank to operate the steps. Constant pain! Don't tell me that all RV's are just naturally junk. Something like this is very fixable if someone wanted to spend the effort to redesign a reliable set of stairs.

Can save you some time for the next time it quits. Wires corrode at the plug in. Apply some dielectric grease to the plug and also the plug at the motor

When you hear the click, I thought that the motor likely is not the problem. He didn’t listen for it. The sound is very faint. I’ve used lubricant and cleaned the steps from underneath to get them working. I’m going to check for a loose wire. Mine go long periods of working fine then stop.
