I know many of you who come to watch this video are having a particular problem going on with your steps right now. This video won't solve every power step issue, but it will solve 95% of them. When trying to figure out what’s going on with your steps, always start with the common issues first. Methodically check each item to eliminate what it isn't and that will reveal what the problem has to be. This video not only shows you the common things you can do to prevent problems in the first place, but if a problem does come up, you know where and how to staring looking. Throwing money at a problem is never the procedure. Diagnose the problem first. If a part has been proven to be bad, then replace that part. Controllers, motors, gear boxes and other operational parts can and do expire from age, or will not work properly when subjected to a lot of rain, humidity, salt water….like staying near beaches or salty environments ie salted roads in the winter and the most common one……lack of maintenance. So use this video as a syllabus or a workbook of sorts, to help guide you into these different areas to check when you do have a problem with your steps. And of course do these maintenance items once a year to help prevent problems from happening in the first place. Other than the parts sources I listed in the description test, here's some additional info on getting the right replacement parts...... The proper replacement motor and/or gear box sourced from an auto parts store can vary depending on your type and model of steps. Generally speaking many can be replaced with a 2006 Taurus window motor part# 742-240 but sometimes the bolt pattern isn’t correct and in one instance the 9-tooth gear was smaller then the original gear. More places to find motor & gear parts: 1) AM Equipment 402 E. Hazel St Jefferson, OR 97352, (541) 327-1546 the motor is $29 plus $7 shipping. 2) Replacement step motor at AutoZone. It's a Siemens "Window Lift Motor", part# WL43003. 3) Autozone. The brand is "Siemens" The ID tag lists the following numbers: 59720-20 121899 4) A 1986-1995 Ford Taurus left front window lift motor sometimes will match. NAPA part # BK655-1395 $63.99. Also from Auto-Zone Manufactured by Dorman part# 742-206. This has a lifetime Warranty and was $49.99. On disassembly of the motor if you find the plastic plugs severely lopsided due to all the years of strain, new plugs cost $8.00 at Autozone or Amazon. Some folks that have a 25 series Kwikee step motor can replace it with a with a Dorman 742-277 window lift motor for a 1986 Ford Taurus driver side window lift motor. Taurus has a high torque motor which is why the number ends with 277 meaning high torque. AutoZone has rebuild kits for Dorman window lift gear boxes (plastic gears). Always use old motor and gear box to match to the right new one for your steps.

Your video was a lifesaver! Our steps quit working the other day after 5 years of full-time use. I had watched several other KZbin videos and they weren’t specific enough to be helpful. Yours while preventative centric still have enough detail in the troubleshooting part to get me going. I’m not sure, but think it was the tapping the motor with the mallet, but I also tightened the connections. Bottom line: The steps are working again. And I lubed them off good. TFYHelp!

I was looking all over for the fuse that blew out on our steps. Bought a 2005 used motorhome and as usual, there were no wiring diagrams with the coach or available from the defunct manufacturer. Your video pointed it out nicely.

I just replaced a 1996 motorhome with a new to me 2018 Thor ACE. The steps on the new unit were a concern to me because they give about 1/4" - 1/2" when I put my weight on them. The step on the old unit was rock solid, it did not give at all when weight was put on it. I see that the steps on your unit do exactly the same thing that my unit's steps do. So, now I understand that the give must be due to the more complex multiple step mechanism compared to the single step design of the old unit. Your video has shown me what I need to do to prevent the slop becoming a problem down the road.
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, movement in the steps is common but that's why you support them underneath when parked. Otherwise that movement or bouncing up and down every time you step on them can cause premature wear and/or bind or break the gears in the gear box. Just support the steps and you'll be fine.

Thank you very much for this video, I just got problems with my RV step, suddenly stopped working, fortunately the step was retracted; I already fixed today thanks to your video, I went directly to check the ground cable and it was in the air, it came off of the ground screw. I cleaned it and re established the ground and bingo the step is working well, I took advantage to lubricate the step and now is working perfect. Thanks for your useful and educational videos.

Thank you Martin and Joanie! We have a 38' Fleetwood Expedition. My RV steps were stuck in the "out" position. I didn't know it and I was driving through the RV gate to get propane. My gate is only 9 1/2 ft wide. As I was going through the gate, my wife started to yell at me to stop, but it was too late and I made it through the gate. I was lucky that I didn't wipe out the steps because I was only 2" or so away from the post. So with my wife's guidance, I backed the motorhome up into the RV access area so I could figure out how to get the steps back in. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. After watching your video, I got my hammer out started to use it. I hit the motor a few good times. I thought it wouldn't make a difference. Well surprise, surprise, surprise!!! When I closed the door, it started working. I felt like a little kid! I opened and closed the door a few times before it sunk in that it was actually working! Thank you for the awesome video and keep on doing the DIY stuff. We appreciate you!

Your video came at exactly the right time! My step was working fine however it makes no difference if I have the key in the ignition in off or on position , and if the steps switch is on or off. Every time I open the door the steps comes out and close it it goes back in. It recent got stuck in the out position so I replaced the controller, as well as the motor and gear assy. It works again just as it did before-all the time! My rig is a 1997 Dutchstar DP-3757. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all you do!

*Every time I open the door the steps comes out and close it it goes back in* So I'm confused. This is the way it's supposed to work. *It recent got stuck in the out position so I replaced the controller, as well as the motor and gear assy. It works again just as it did before-all the time!* So I don't understand your question for help. It's working as it did before. That's the way it's supposed to work. Clarify if I'm not understanding you right.

@@RVstreet Thanks for getting back to me Marty, I will try to clarify. If I open the door from the outside the steps extends out and then if I turn the step switch in the off position , shouldnt the step stay down unless I put the key in the ignition or turn the key on? If I am parked at a camp site with jacks down no key in ignition I thought with the steps extended and switch of the steps shouils stay extended until I turn the ignition on or turn the steps switch back on, now the steps come out and go back in every time I open the door. Thanks again for your input!

@@aldsldr.3589 *If I open the door from the outside the steps extends out and then if I turn the step switch in the off position , shouldnt the step stay down unless I put the key in the ignition or turn the key on?* Yes. Ok so for example, we're parked right now in a CG. Jacks are down and slides out. Step Switch is in the OFF position. Now we can go in and out of the door and the steps stay put. This is the way it should be set and work when parked. If I turn ON the step switch, the steps will deploy and retract every time I open and close the door. On the ignition switch....it over rides the switch. When you put in the key and turn it it tells the steps "I'm going to start the RV now, so bring in the steps". Since you put in the key and turned it, the steps assume you're going to start the engine and it doesn't want you to leave with the steps deployed. So it retracts them. If you open the door it will deploy the steps. If you keep the door open the steps will stay deployed. Again... the ignition switch....over rides the step switch. It's a safety feature. Just putting in the key into ignition doesn't do anything, it's when you turn it that over rides the step switch.

I greased my Super C Nexus Wraith with the information you provided. I bought the grease gun you suggested; it worked great. You might think about a video on braking systems used when towing a car. I use a RVi 3. Just got it. I had a RVi 2 for about 5 years. I replaced it 2 times under warranty. Otherwise it worked fine and was easy to install. I have yet to take a trip with the RV3. I bought and used your foam cannon. I have a water softener I got before your video. I was taking it in to be serviced every 2500 gallons. I thought the that the resin needed changing. They were just regenerating with salt. I paid $90.00 for the last service. With your video I will do this myself. I will now do your step service. Thanks for your maintenance tips

Great video you guys!! We laughed so hard with that intro!!! Great tips again Martin, the step carpets were a #1 priority for us even tho our steps are the Lippert manual fold type those carpet steps are just an added safety precaution and also keep the dirt from being tracked inside! The added adjustable step I saw that you have is on our list after we experienced during our two week shake down trip. The height difference from the last step to the ground was a knee killer and after I noticed a fellow rv’er who had the same step as yours we’ve been searching for one but they are sold out like many other rv things that this massive rv surg has taken North America by storm! I’ve since built a wooden step but allowed enough space to slip in extra wood to give it a sturdy step! Like always you guys, keep the camera rolling safe journeys ! 👍🇨🇦

You are awesome! I just got my 2017 Georgetown 364ts back from only big Ford Truck dealer that services RVs on the F53 Chasis in Cincinnati. I asked specifically to check front end and do the 30,000 mile checkup. Oil change and lube bearings on wheels. I told them the Jeep I was towing had bad wheel bearing and axle trouble after long trip. Also they have a 20 point inspection etc. I then was watching your channel for first time on TV about Air Filter changing. So I go down to where RV is stored inside open air filter housing and find almost black air filter. I called dealer service manager and he said can't believe his guy missed it. I took a photo and sent to him. Then I checked your video on lubricating front end 9 points. I go back down and sure enough it looks like they were not even touched. I have had it there 3 times before and looks like they have never greased the front end or anything else probably. Thanks to your videos I will be doing my own maintenance or checking who does it to be sure it is done correctly.

Martin..Question: I have a step motor very similar to yours. My steps quit working. I simply removed the motor, unplugged it and found it was the contacts. I plugged it back in, reinstalled it and now it operates in reverse. Door opens...stairs come in; door closes and steps go out. I thought it was a synch issue and opened the door, put the steps all the way out and the motor was in the open position. Reinstalled the motor and no change. I called Lip[pert tech support. She advised me that "The motor changed polarity" and you will have to buy a new motor. I am an engineer and never heard of such a thing. Furthermore, how would the motor have changed on its' own? She said "it happens". The wiring is correct and each end of the cable is unique, so they cannot be accidentally reversed. I am at a loss and really having a difficult time believing the motor changed its' own polarity! Have you ever heard of this? Now one would think to just reverse the DC supply wires, but the logic board, ignition switch, and door switch will be affected. Jack
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 2 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of this change polarity thing either. However I have heard Lippert suggesting a new motor or a conversion kit, many of which bought it and found out later they didn't need it and returned it. I believe I've already addressed your type of question in the comments section already. Also, it's always a good idea to mark the position of everything BEFORE you pull or disassemble anything. That way the position of the gears will go back exactly the way they were. They could be 180º out. All these things work together, the motor, the controller that reads the step position, the main on/off switch and the door mag switch. And then don't forget, the ignition switch can over ride it all as a safety feature.

Check the fuse, it may be corroded and the power signal may be getting interrupted from the batt bay.....etc...etc... Always start with the common issues first. Methodically check each item to eliminate what it isn't and that will reveal what the problem has to be. Check your factory wiring diagrams for that area and see how it's wired into your house batt's. Then trace all connections to there and do the same as above, Clean and check. It's definitely an electrical issue and that could-and I mean could-include that the controller went bad. Don't buy a new one until you do all what I outlined above and more. Throwing money at it is not the procedure. Diagnose the problem, if a part has be proven to be bad, then replace that part. I don't know the history of your RV, but controllers and other operational issues can and do go out from age, subjected to a lot of rain, humidity, salt....like staying near beaches or salt water and the main one......lack of maintenance.

Is this a problem that has just happened or something that has been going on for quite some time? He should have a magnetic door switch down there. Maybe it was removed for some reason. Look closely down there and dig through the carpet and see if you can find 2 wires or evidence that there used to be a switch there. Maybe old holes in the door or molding. OR...crawl under the stairs and look up at that area and see if there's evidence of it being there in the past. Without the switch, the stairs are not going to know when to retract or deploy when the door is opened or closed.

Hello Martin, I also like to take care of things before they break. We are weekend campers so we keep a small pocket tablet in which we make notes, add things needed and or repaired as they come up so at the end of the trip, rip that page out and we take it in the house so we can start working on the list or prepare or what is needed to be done. As for that step motor, similar to what I have for my awning. I paid dearly for the new motor from the manufacturer. Next time I will head to the auto parts store. Thank you!

Hi Martin! Thank you for this video! I had trouble finding a video with this style gear. I have a question that maybe you or someone else lurking in here might be able to help me out. The teeth on about a third of the gear are chewed up. So I'm replacing the gear and motor. I just figure I might as well replace the motor, too. The problem is the bolts holding the motor (and table) are just that...bolts with nuts buried in a really hard to access spot. @RVstreet no. I actually have the whole frame removed from the rv and they are completely unretracted. The problem is the motor and gear are not SCREWED into the base plate like most videos show with the integrated gear, where you simply just unscrew the thing to remove it. On our model with this gear plate that you sanded in the video, the motor and gear are through-bolted to the plate they are mounted on, making it extremely difficult to get my fat fingers on the nuts under the plate (and covered by the very top of the steps.) I read someplace else last night, it basically makes a 20 minute job a 3hr job...so it looks like that's just how it is. Unless someone might know a trick! Thanks for helping! Thanks Martin! I have to reseal all the holes under our coach with foam. So I will do the steps too. Had a weird thing happen on a trip. It was raining and we were getting quite a bit of water coming out of the shower while driving. After getting home, I got under the coach and found old foam and poorly installed. Went under to clear out the old foam and couldn't believe what I found. Thor had cut a 9"x9" hole through the floor under the shower drain. I am guessing that they used the block that was cut out as a plug and taped it up on the bottom. At some point the tape let go and the plug is gone. So exposed water pipes, electrical wiring, heat ductwork, and exposed drains. The hole is above the driverside dual wheels. Very hard to see. Again, thank you for the step video! Respectfully, Kevin

Is there a way to test the control unit? With the switch on I have 12volts at the plug but the step will not deploy. I connected a 12 volt power supply directly to the motor and the step deploys. Thanks Brian
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 3 жыл бұрын
What you have done has actually tested and isolated the control board already. 1) You have power to the plug before the control board 2) You bypassed the control board and powered the motor directly and it works Conclusion: The control board is the middle man that is not transferring power to the motor. Have you done the other things that I covered in the video then? Like, checked & cleaned grounds, fuse enclosure and all the contacts in the wiring harness? Is your steps not working a sudden event or has this been an ongoing, problematic issue that has finally failed? Have the steps been exposed to any extreme weather conditions, rain or anything like that? When is the last time they worked correctly? Has something changed recently? Checking the things I listed above and asking yourself these type of questions will assist you to the course of action you should take. thx Brian for watching and your question. Hope this helps. 🔧 👍

Thanks for the great info. When parking at home I have a brick planter that prevents the steps from deploying and I would like have a temporary override that prevents the steps from extending. Other than placing a magnet on the contact switch do you have a better idea? Yes I understand they automatically deploy as a safety feature but is would only be for parking at home. Currently the coach must be further in the driveway to avoid steps hitting the planter and getting cars in the garage is very difficult with only inches to spare. Thanks

Well I don't see placing a magnet over the switch a very big deal at all. Pretty simple actually. But, if you don't want to get into installing a switch, possible a relay, more wiring bla, bla, bla, why don't you just turn the step switch off, get under the steps and unplug the controller wiring plug? OR....disconnect the ground wire. That should be a solution. When you get ready to roll again, plug the wiring plug back into the controller or reconnect the ground wire and your good to go. The only additional thing I'd do if you go that route, is apply a very thin coat of dielectric grease to the plug and male end on the controller and then tape the plug to prevent any moisture getting in. Let me know what you ultimately ended up doing. I'd like to know. 👍

Just wanted to say thank you and commend you for a good job. I came across it as I'm planning this weekend to start troubleshooting my steps that stopped working recently. Based on your video, I'm hoping/guessing that it is a fuse on the underside like you showed. Already checked the fuse in the main fuse box(es) and they appear good. I recently had the main engine's alternator go bad such that the voltage regulator was allowing high (higher than 14v) to all the coach's systems. Got the alternator replaced and it seems the steps might be a casualty of the over-voltage. Anyway.... I am digressing.... back to your feedback... thanks for going through all the parts and talking about how it all works. This will be most helpful as I start diagnosing mine in the next day or two. My steps are stuck in. How can I manually deploy so that I can get to the motor?
@RVstreet
@RVstreet 2 жыл бұрын
1) See if you can get behind the steps and tap the motor from behind. Sometimes this will jar it enough to work and deploy the steps. 2) Removed the mounting bolts for the whole step and lower it down. A floor jack or even a simple tire jack could support it as you take the bolts out. Also, you need to disconnect your batteries (remove neg. cable) to make sure it cannot deploy while working on it because that thing could accidentally get power and bad things will happen. 3) Sometimes you can get the steps to manually extend. There is a cotter pin that is basically unreachable when the steps are closed. You can only access it through the 1/4 “ slot between the top step and the aluminum flashing. If you can, remove the flashing or trim panel just above the top step. This will give you enough room to remove the cotter pin, which the released the steps. 4) Depending on your RV and how the steps are set up, there is a pin that you can pull, has a cotter key, this will let the steps come loose from the electric motor swing arm, then you have access to the bolts holding the motor and swing arm to the step mount.

I have a 2016 fleetwood jamboree with kwikee steps that work, however, My override switch does not keep steps out. I have 3 entry switches. One for porch light that will keep step out, if I have my light on always, one that should be a dedicated step override, and the other is step light. The dedicated switch will not keep step out. What would cause that?

Well hard to say without being there and digging into possibilities, but the first thing I'd check is the switch itself. If not that, then the switch ground. I would also get under the stairs like I did in the video and clean all the electrical components and eliminate those possible failure points right off the bat. The way I approach trying to figure out what's causing •ANY• malfunction on anything, is I always eliminate the obvious things and steps first. Once those are eliminated, that means it can only be XYZ.

Simple Question. Trying to replace my light bulb in the fixture under step. How do you get the cover off?
