How to Replace Kwikset Door latch Exterior door Deadlatch. Jammed door latches means you can't twist the handle to open and close the door. The door is stuck closed. Some poking and prodding and possibly removal of the door handle to open the door to remove the kwikset latch. This is a DIY tutorial on how to change your exterior kwikset door latch.

You're more knowledgeable than the associate at the big Home Improvement store where I live! I knew nothing about the door latch so I took my old one to the store to look for a similar item. I grabbed one package from the shelf. Everything was the same except mine had that retractable "little piece". I asked the store associate about that "missing piece" and also showed him my old one. He assured me that I got the right one and that the "missing piece" was locked inside the unit! I believed him so I purchased one. After I got home, opened the package, no matter what I did the missing piece that he said "was locked inside" never came out! Thank God I found your KZbin instruction video! Now I understand why they looked a little bit different.... I was looking for a latch for the "exterior door" but the store associate gave me the one for "interior door" while assuring me I picked the right one! I droved back to the store that same day and the item was returned! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!

I have the same problem, but I can't get the door open to replace the deadlatch. The deadlatch is frozen in the door with the door closed. How did you get yours open?

I did find a solution. From the inside of the door, form a wire, maybe from a coat hanger, into a curve, then feed that curve into the gap between the door and the frame, around the stuck latch, and then back out to the inside of the door. Pull somewhat vigorously on that loop of wire, and it will force the latch open, and the door will open. Replace the deadlatch with a new one, and you should be good for another five years until it breaks again. Kwikset deadlatches appear to like to die this way regularly.

@@michaeljmadsen THIS!! From inside, I took a coat hangar wire looped it around the top and back under the bottom Then attached to a small metal Bar. Twist to get a good grip. Wear gloves and pulled like hell until it pulled the latch to retract. If you have the handles still on first try the water bottle or credit card tricks but you need handles to shimmy that.

@@michaeljmadsen Thank you! I used a 12-18 inch piece of wire (14-16 gauge), shaped in a U, inserted as you stated, clamped locking pliers to the two ends for a nice handle. Enabled great pulling force on the rounded section of the latch, forcing it to retract and door to open. It finally opened when I combined with a 4-6 inch piece of wire, 1 inch bent 90 deg, that poked and probed deeper interior spots on mechanism mentioned in a few other videos. My latch was stuck "real good" (Kwikset Tylo, only 3 years old; knob turned, but latch did not retract enough to open). Wasted hours trying to figure it out. Never imagined that taking knobs off to expose mechanism would not immediately fix any problem (ignorance is bliss)! Door completely unusable until fixed, not very fun. Kwikset has lifetime warranty, sent new latch (worth $5-10), but told me to contact locksmith if I couldn't remove myself.

I just replaced the same Kwikset latch on my garage entry door. It works great, locks/unlocks perfectly with door ajar, but when I close the door and lock it from inside, I have difficulty unlocking it (again from inside). Yet, it unlocks perfectly from outside (with key). Any ideas what I did wrong?
