good info, but my real issue is with the jiggliness of the actual knob, i guess a solution is just buy expensive knobs, but i think i will try shimming the bayonet that sticks into the actual knob, see if that helps

Look for a slot or a hole on the handle shaft on the inside door knob. You depress in that hole and there’ll be a little keeper bar and when you push in the handle will snap off giving access to the screws.

Just to add a bit, in case it helps someone else - I had a loose "Kwikset lever handle" set up & checked this video first. Was just looking for quick possibilities w/o trying to match set up carefully. The lever handle type uses a different mechanism - a fairly common "hex key" (aka "Allen wrench") mechanism for capture / release. I didn't realize / recognize it, at first, and ended up consulting another video among the first search hits. FYI - some handles, knobs, etc. may have a small hole in the side / 'stem' with a hex ('socket cap') screw or something like that. On the handle I had to fix, it required a 3/32" hex key / Allen wrench & that information was in the title of relevant results. Though not directly relevant to the handle I fixed, still very much appreciate this video & the efforts of all those out there making this kind of info easier to find, visualize, etc. Thanks "Mr. Hardware"! _Edit: ah, I see you mentioned this, Mr. Hardware, in a reply to someone else who asked about the lever type - didn't see that comment previously. I have another question. if you can answer it. My house is 41 years old -- door is original with house, still in good shape. The area where the door locks into the other side, the part that goes in and out when you turn the knob sits on a wood panel on my door, bu it is chipping away -- that in part was due to someone trying to break into my house the day my husband passed away at the hospital. Anyway, how can I replace the wood portion that is chipping away? Is it possible to cut out that one section and add anther piece of wood so it holds the plate more stable? Any help would be appreciated. I am really thankful there are people out there like you who help people like me .

Only 3/8” difference but the wrong one won’t line up w/the existing door hole. The come in brass or stainless finishes. If Amazon doesn’t have the right one call Gilbert’s, 586-776-9532, ask for Jenn, Brad or Daniel and tell them the backseat measurement and they should be able to get you the correct one.

My new Kwikset door knob does not have that arrow mechanism shown in your video, just a small sq hole at each rose location, this is on the inside knob, the outer handle side has those holes sealed. Sticking a small Allen wrench in the hole there and there’s nothing to push or turn. Now what? Still can’t get to the screws.

@@Chainyanker007 a pic of the knob will help. Sometimes the tool being pressed into the hole act as a keeper itself. Also sometimes the tool is missing the top of the keeper and sliding next to it doesn’t help at all. Pull on the knob while you are pressing/searching for the keeper. [e-mail] to send pic.

I believe Kwikset quit manufacturing that door knob because I’ll bet so many people returned it for a full credit because they couldn’t figure it out. It’s a clean system but not easily figured out.

I have kwikset with a completely different setup. I had to use an allen-head wrench unfortunately when these things come loose the access to the allen-head wrench is at an angle [BAD DESIGN!] and it can be difficult to get the wrench in at the right place to get it out. For this reason apparently, one of my set screws is monkeyed up and I had to improvise to get it out. After getting the set-screw out (note they are reverse-threaded!!!), I pulled off the cover and reset the tensioning screws. Put everything back together with a prayer- these are not the nicest door-handle mechanisms I've seen to be sure. With the information in the video it ws close enough I could guess how the rest worked. Next time I build a house I'll look for something nicer than Kwikset I s'pose. Best.

I have a knob with no screws. I found the indent and got one side off but the other side won’t come off. HELP

You need to see if the handle has a release slot or hole in the handle. Push in on the dent and pull on the handle at the same time once the handle is off then the rose should be easier to remove. If you’re still having a question see if the manufacturer is stamped in the backseat on the edge of the door and I bet I could answer your question more fully.

No we don’t but I have two things for you to do. One, open the door and try the key in the lock, if the key operate the bolt operate properly then it is because the door has shifted and the bolt connect going to the jamb is out of alignment. If it still won’t turn when you have the door open, you remove the cylinder from the door and you try operating the bolt using a screwdriver inside the bolt. And you can find out if the problem is mechanical there. While the lock is out of the door you could try the key in it then.

I don’t think I’ve seen this hidden release on the lever lock. Quickset lever locks usually use a small Allen wrench to release the handle.

@@oliviapapitto3124 could be that you have the type of handle that has either a small hole or a small slot in the inside knob stem, (it’s sometimes hard to find). You insert a small screwdriver or sometimes a heavy paperclip to push in on the retainer and pull the handle it the same time, and once the handle slides off, then the brass rose will snap off and the screws will then be exposed.

Could be your handle has a notch in the stem that you push in to remove the handle and then the rose will come off.
