I have 4 new locks and 4 different sets of keys. Can I change all the keys to fit and all the locks use only one key?
@MrHardware16 жыл бұрын
Rhoda, as long as the locks accept the same blank, yes. If the doors aren't smart locks you'll need to take them to Gilberts or a locksmith.
@claudeduke43116 жыл бұрын
I found that a smart lock that's becomes a dum lock that you need a reset device for 30 dollars to fix when cheaper to bye new one in stead unless you deal in apartments easier to just get a new one. Thanks though it was very informative info.

Thank you for indicating that pulling the plunger will allow the original key to come out at 3o'clock, when otherwise a key cannot come out at 3 o'clock. The instructions seem to indicate the plunger should be able to go in further than I could get it to, so I came here to see. I could, in fact, pull the original out at 3 o'clock, so I knew it was ready for the new key, thanks to you! Thanks!

He was repainting a house that was just sold to new owners. He lost the key or something and was paying out of his own pocket to try to get back in. The previous owner didn't want to pay and he didn't know who the new owners were yet. He lost a lot of money by forfeiting all that work he had put in. That lock was a nightmare for him. I had really hoped he would try your technique, but by then (it is August in Texas), he had had enough. I bet he learned his lesson.

I have the plunger tool, and 1 working Key. I want to rekey to a new Key for the new tenants moving in. What “new” Key do I buy if I go to lowes? How do I get a brand new key to use as the official “new” Key with its own set of teeth?
@MrHardware16 жыл бұрын
Once you have an old lock, from almost anywhere, I use that key. I also have 3 keys for my rentals, A, B, AND C. Once you accumulate old locks you key them to an A key or B key or C. Then when a tennant with an A key moves out I replace with a B key. Get it? Go buy one set of locks and key them alike and to your new C key. That is your emergency set if you need to evict someone and change the locks immediately.

Only the new key will work in the locks. The one you chose. Smart locks do not allow master keying, allowing several different keys to work in one lock.

You should be able to get them guaranteed, however some businesses like Gilberts have the tool to reset the cylinder saving costs and the environment. Because the bad lock will be destroyed, needlessly. Blair

No, only Kwikset and the model with the smart key feature. It is a distinct small slot next to the key slot. No small slot, not a smart key lock.

You need to have the key that currently operates the lock. Then you can change it to the main key for your house.
@ebachy6 жыл бұрын
So, if this IS installed as the key to open your house at the front (and and only) door, where do you get another key to change to...say when a tenant moves and you want rekey that front door? Do I go to a locksmith, big box store, or a thrift store and just buy any old key (or find an old one in my junk drawer)? Doesn't it need to fit in the lock channels? What is to stop a crook from buying one and using the tool to rekey any house door lock he wants to steal from - will that tool only work with a single lock set? Maybe you need to email that reply directly to me...

You cannot plunge the lock w/out the original key.
@HTown993 жыл бұрын
Wait, what? From your own video's description: "With the Kwikset Smart Key, you can rekey your locks, *****even without a good key*****, right in the door, in just 15 seconds." After watching the video and before I read your comment, I was assuming that I could remove a bad lock from the inside of my house (how else are you going to pull the lock internals from the door and get them into the SmartKey device?) and then use the SmartKey device to re-key the lock.. But are you now saying that you must *still* have the original key??? That would COMPLETELY contradict the title of the video! I hope that perhaps you instead meant, "You can't re-key the lock w/out either the original key or else access to the inside of the lock to remove it." Please clarify. Thanks Hardware

My issue with these locks is you can take a blank kwikset key and cut it off at the head and put it into the keyway. Then take a flathead screwdriver and hit it into the keyway and with enough torque you can turn the cylinder. Brinks has a video of it here on KZbin. Cool idea but from a secure standpoint they're garbage just like the rest of kwiksets locks.

You'll need a locksmith that has the decoder for a padlock. It may cost more than a new padlock. See if it is guaranteed and return it and try again. We don't sell the Kwikset padlocks so I'm not familiar. Blair

If you have that junk on your door someone can break into it with a screwdriver. The mechanism inside to rekey so quickly is its flaw and it's very flimsy. So flimsy it can be turned and broken open with key blank and flat head screwdriver. I wouldnt let any of my family live behind this lock.
@hoggernogger94026 жыл бұрын
What if the burglar has a smart key? They just use any key to get into ur house?
@MrHardware16 жыл бұрын
Not so. The lock will not activate w/out a working key. You will need your current working key to put the lock into rekey mode. You are as safe as with any medium quality lock. No worries, Blair
@edrikallahverdi32662 жыл бұрын
its a useless lock that can be easily kicked open.
@charlemarcharlemar24012 жыл бұрын
Also the Kwikset (he never names it but uses the street language verb "plunge") small key used in the small hole needs to be unique to only that Kwikset lock, which is crucial, otherwise, any CROOK needs only to buy the same lock and use that pin "plunge" key to change your lock but that is never said and I doubt if that small plunger could not easily be picked...also some of the worse camera work I have ever seen.
@charlemarcharlemar24012 жыл бұрын
Soooooooooooooooo, if you can change it so can the CROOK! This is a deadbolt designed by CROOKS for CROOKS. Just go to the store, buy the Kwikset lock, then use it to break into any other Kwikset lock, done.
@MrHardware12 жыл бұрын
Although this isn’t the most secure lock it can’t be opened w/out a working key. Plunging the cylinder w/out a working key permanently (can be saved by a locksmith) disables the lock.
