No, they were literally owned by Scientologists. The creators did put their foot down occasionally on things they were particularly passionate about, but the money backing the site was for a long time coming from Scientology to some degree.

Fun fact, apparently neopets can die. I went back to my neopet maybe like 5 years later and it says that my pet was about to die...I had no clue they can die. However from knowing that....I wonder how it survived so long of me not going back after so many years. Edit: nvm it just means really low stats...not death...but that still makes me a bad owner 🙃

Neopets is so funny to me because originally it was intended for adults so a bunch of the early lore is really weirdly dark (Lupes apparently love eating Chias for some reason?). I’ve been playing it off and on since 2014 and it’s kind of gone back to being less kid-focused since then. Still a really fun game despite being kind of a trainwreck right now lol.
