It was some time in winter of 1977 when during dinner at the table my late father quoted Ghalib's sher "Boo e Gul, Nala e Bul, Joo e Charage e Mahfil/ Jo Bhi Nikla Teri Mehfil se Paresha'n Nikla"// My father had been an English language journalist, Urdu critic, Hindi poet, and one of the most close student of late Prof Raghupati Sahai Firaq Sahab. On hearing his recited sher despite being youngest among my siblings and who had comparatively least depth of Urdu poetry remarked in the discussion on the table, Papa there is one sher which has even greater depth than what Ghalib wrote from a ghazal all three of us had heard live sung by Ustad Mehdi Hasan in last year's concert at Modern School auditorium in Delhi. Then I recited: "Kya Bhala Mujh Ko Parakhney Ka Natija Nikla/ Zakhm e Dil Aap ki Nazron se Bhi Gehra Nikla,'// I was over joyed when Papa praised me for my assesment of the two ashaars in same radeef & qafiya along with the way both poets had weaved muhavaras to convey the pathos of the lover towards the beloved! Thanks for posting this and making me recall my late father while hearing this ghazal. 👌🎯💕🇮🇳
