I totally agree about going back to Kamakura. You just can't get it all on one visit. I went there in 1969. I was so enthusiastic about it, that some of my friends wanted to see it too. I ended up taking a group of them there. I also visited Kagoshima - I highly recommend that as a destination, active volcano was very interesting.

So cool! I went to Enoshima for the first time last March and loved it. Lots of stairs and climbing though. I ate at the same dango shop and got the anko mochi too as well as the kinako dango. Loved it. The caves were a little disappointing for me. I took the boat back to shore too as well as the Enoden train. Awesome ride if a bit too crowded. Kyde: 7:37, yes, "caramelization" is what happens when any carbohydrate (starch or sugar) rich food is heated until it changes color and/or shape (and also significantly changes flavor). Examples are: toasted bread, sugar that has melted enough to form the crackle on that rice cracker (or frosted flakes, or granola), and browned french fries. The same word is used even when the resulting food is moist. For example: carmelized onions, that pinch of sugar thrown in to a hot wok with all the stir-fry seasonings & ingredients to make the meal "teriyaki", and scoops of brown sugar & butter melted together into actual caramel candy. =)

We went to Enoshima in July, and I was kind of disappointed with it. It seemed to be more for a high schooler's date night than for me and a friend to enjoy. Very touristy. We got down on the rocks (where the Sea turtle was) and that was probably the best part. The caves were okay. I guess if you live there it'd be okay to go to, but we wasted a day on our vacation going there.

+Azuki Island The tourist info I got was pretty lame at the time, if they had a few photos of the street scene and the caves I would have gone. They focused on some sort of amusement park/sea world sort of thing, which is not what I went to Japan to see so I chose to avoid it entirely and focus on the mainland. To be honest I should have spent more time in Kamakura. One day (10 hours) of wandering around was fun but I still missed a lot. I should have found a place and made it a 2 day excursion.

Though I, and all the now 14 million members of the Soka Gakkai, were excommunicated by the then High Priest of TaiSeki-ji, twice. It was because of our members pilgrimage to the Head Temple of Nichire ShoShu from 1945 to 1991, that enabled it to never become a tourist Temple. At the height of the system, there were just over 2 million visitors to the Head Temple each year. We never had the talismans or trinkets for sale. You made a donation to worship before the Dai-Gohonzon in the Grand Temple, the ShoHondo that housed 5000 members at once. It was and still is a working Temple. Though the membership connected to the Temple is under 200K I think now. They took all those millions donated, and I guess have squandered it in the last 20 years. I don't think they are doing well. While the SGI has grown by 4 million.
