Kyla Pratt (The Proud Family, One on One) & Julian Gant (As They Made Us, Oddballs) join us in the studio to discuss working with Mayim on Call Me Kat, their shared grief journeys after losing their friend and co-star Leslie Jordan, and not conforming to society & the entertainment industry. Julian opens up about losing jobs in Hollywood because of his refusal to cut his hair and his alarming racially motivated police interactions. He compares his skills as a professional fighter with performing, shares the piece of acting advice Dustin Hoffman gave him, and strategies he uses to cope with anxiety tied to his dyslexia. Kyla reveals her struggles as an empath and picking up other people’s negative energies, her grounding techniques, and how her food sensitivities affect her mental and physical health. She gives us a show-and-tell about her crystals, explains the practice of learning when to ask for help, and ways she stays in tune with her body. Mayim, Kyla, and Julian consider how their real personas inform their Call Me Kat characters, the importance of sharing different opinions, and dealing with rejections during auditions.

There will NEVER be another person like Mr. Leslie Jordan. God truly broke the mold on him. He was a fighter, an advocate, and a tu,y beautiful human being inside and out. He lived a life that was of service to a marinalized group of people when NO ONE would do this. He was a hospice companion to the dying, he was a tender touch when there was no tenderness to be seen or had. He was a gracious, funny, talented good old Southern gentleman that could make you howl with laughter, or weep for his honesty. He was soo many things to soo many people but the one thing he was always was HUMAN and that is one helluva legacy to leave behind.

I know I say this a lot, but this might be one of my favorite episodes. Watching Mayim, Kyla, & Julian interact in an unscripted way makes me appreciate their Call Me Kat characters even more. They seem like such a fun group, on & off camera. Makes me hope for another season, hopefully with a live audience

Leslie was such a good friend of yours, Mayim. He will forever be remembered and missed, because he was just such a sweet person that cared about others. It's just a shame that he was gone during the production of season 3 of CMK, where he got written out of the show by his character getting married to his boyfriend and it was just so sweet and then you had Dolly show up and deliver him a real-life musical tribute in her scene! It was so amazing! RIP Leslie Jordan, bro! Also, Kyla and Julian are both hilarious and beautiful people, man! I love Kyla so much! Glad you her on and especially him on, too! Thank you!

Having lost my brother as suddenly as you all have lost Leslie, but even in a more painful way because he succeeded in his first suicide atempt in my birthday, I feel I want to hug you all tight. How glad and a bit envious I am for you all having these fabulous second family (you all look much more than a cast) to grieve together the lost of the precious human being that Leslie was. Love, Light, Leslie. And love, light Mayim, Kyla, Julian, Swoosie and Chayenne. Much love. Biggest hug.

I say this alot, but this episode is FABULOUS. In caps. Perfect. It’s such a pleasure to a huge fan of CMK as myself (it’s my “comfort show” along with TBBT) to watch you all as a group of friends beyond being cast members. To see your real personas, out of your characters, interact with each other & discover the well-furnished brains you all have. It makes me appreciate even more all work done at CMK. After today, with Leslie’s & Cheyenne episodes in my head too, I’m able to appreciate nuances that maybe otherwise would have gone unnoticed. Said that we all grieve & will miss Leslie forever. This speaks volumes of the extraordinary human being that he was. And how lucky you were sharing days with him. I watched “Reporting For Duty” beautiful & heartfelt homage. Thank you Mayim for your touching words there. I hope you can pass my thanks to Jim Parsons for his joyfully but so caring ones. To Cheyenne too, I almost cried with him. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart.

I had to stop listening at work because I was laughing out loud. You can tell you three get along so well. It’s so great to hear Kyla being so strong and confident to tell people when she can’t take their energy in. I could not imagine losing Leslie the way you all did. I also think that you did it as well as you possibly could have especially on the air. I really hope this show gets picked up for another season. To work with people you genuinely love being with is such a gift and it shows. I learned so much from this episode.

Touching, funny, cool glimpse into your guys' working relationships, dear Leslie Jordan (not ashamed I got teary-eyed when you started talking about him, I'm one of the countless IG users who he kept going early in the pandemic, and we were born the same year). I am sorry that you are unable to afford the medical care you need. It's wonderful that a show like this can bring someone real immediate assistance in improving their health, just through honest open warm discussions on being human ❤ Staying home as an empath can be a temporary solution but it is also one that points out our need to protect and finding what will help strengthen or enable us to do that next. Grounding is a great and essential first step in the skills to do so. It is an opportunity to continue seeking and discovering what else will help buffer, and defend from the onslaught of frequencies all around us. Each of us is different and tuned a little more or less in various circumstances to be able to deflect and shield or flow with the experiences without taking on the unconscious or deliberate offloading by others of their energy. The opposite of an empath is not a sociopath, it's a person who does not absorb others energy as much as they project their own energy into the space around them or even intentionally onto other people, to not have to hold onto it or deal with the overwhelm of it and lack of learned skills to process and release it harmoniously. We as social creatures all consciously or unconsciously seek harmony with our environment and surroundings as well as with others. That subtle dance and play off of one another, and with what we interact with informs much of our unconscious, how to create balance, security and comfort.

❤ Do I agree? Let's see... The role of lone wolf most commonly is arrived at and formulated as an armor to adverse social interactions leading to the protective stance of deterministic self reliance and and a perceived complete independence.. those wounds are deep, even for those who seem to thrive in that role, it's a role, as we all have the capacity to embody the attributes of a "lone wolf". What we know about the animal origins of lone wolves is they are often rejects from a pack in the wild. They did not fit in, caused issues within the pack and were forcibly rejected and turned out on their own. What in psychology may call a difficult personality or immutable traits may calcify as identity but are not at the core of who the individual is more complex and layered, fitting many social roles in various circumstances and experiences. A lone wolf in essence oftennis a wounded and insecure animal that has taken on hardened characteristics for a harsh survival. It's not wrong or right, the lone wolf is reflected in the very human instinct to isolate and insulate from harm to protect the core self and individual value and autonomy, and could be considered a person primed for an identity crisis or a breakthrough opportunity, should anything penetrate that self tailored armor, and should they then choose to allow the light in. ✨️ 🐺

I could listen to Julian speak all day. We live an hour out of Detroit and it’s amazing to hear him talk about places we’ve been, Telegraph that we’ve driven in thousands of times, the honest truth of how there is that line where the cities change. The struggle you endure because of being a strong, intelligent black man is heartbreaking and infuriating. As a society, we should be so much further along in equality. We are all humans. You shouldn’t lose work because of your hair. Excellent podcast as usual, Mayim❤ much love

Great episode. I love that your platform makes space for the conversations so many tip toe around like Julian talking about his purpose for growing his hair and the experiences he had with law enforcement, and the Kyla talking about the hair issues on set. To all of you, I extend my condolences. Lastly, I am a high frequency Empath, Kyla is on the right path of knowing herself as an Empath. She was explaining her experiences and I was sitting here finishing most of her sentences and nodding my head and humming mmm hmm to everything she was saying. This was a great episode to watch.

Kayla ❤ Julian ❤ Mayim ❤ Perfect discussion. I appreciate you all! discovering i am an intuitive empath was life changing, and lead me to help others discover their unique qualities and talents with their own methods. Like gut health, everyones energy immune systems are unique to them though we share similarities, what works for one may not for another (yet) and is one of the magical elements of self discovery through the process of learning what that all is about, and how does it relate to 'me'.. Becoming a Reiki Shinpiden, learning chakra healing, teaching myself pendulum divination and taking courses on it, opening to intuitive messages through my strength in clair- called clairvoyance "Seeing clearly", exploring and discovering other avenues like shamanic art therapy, Somatic healing, the principles of Buddhism, Yogic, Shamanic, Hindu, Taoism, death eaters, Hoodoo, mystic christianity, paganism, Wiccan, Witchcraft, theosophic, natural ressonance, EMF, tapping, modern therapies, science research of the body, death, near death, neurological studies, training for lucid dreaming, and integration and conscious acknowledgement of the unconscious self, or Super Conscious, dream therapy and dream interpretation processes, CRV (controlled remote viewing) and applications for that, intuotion boosters like automatic writing, dowsing, psychology of Carl Jung, and global theories of collective consciousness, the alashic texts, including Darwanism, multiple methods of meditation including flow or moving while in a meditative mindset and state (chop wood, draw water) single point meditation, St. Germain violet flame, practicing getting to theta while still cognizant pre-lucid training, have been beautiful and personally enriching discoveries of my own. Hope everyone is healing through their greif eased by the valuable deep friendships you clearly have developed together ❤️ 🙏 P. S. Cleanse and recharge those crystals, Claircognizent Kayla, if you dont already 🤗 See how that feels! And did you know some Catholic Nuns use Pendulums to communicate with Angels and God? Was shocked to find out soy sauce had wheat flour in it. I tried a gluten free soy sauce and it was nasty! Lol so I tried Braag's which is really good and perfect alternative. I am not gluten free but did so for an ex and his health improved dramatically after 6 months of gluten free from skin to digestion, and energy levels, he drank wheat based alcohols and had wheat flour in every single meal for majority of his life and making that change took learning and exploring and new ways of doing things, but once we were on a non-wheat flour based roll, it was easy, and we learned more about making bread, pizzas, and many more things than ever before!

From much study over the years, the term " empath" is not really used correctly. I guess what most people describe this as, is, being emotional about things more than what others may experience emotions about. The thing is, yes, empath & emotions are in the group of human relationalism- we need to know the difference between empathy and sympathy. First sympathy- sympathy is what a person will experience when they hear of something that has happened to a person, and they feel for the person who is going through the experience. Sympathy is felt because we know that the event or situation would be hard on the other person & that they are suffering. Empathy is experienced when we hear of something that has happened to another person and we Know exactly what the person is going through, because the exact same thing has already happened to us- we feel because we have felt their pain in our own lives & personally relate- Empathy = her mother passed away and we respond oh no, i feel her grief, as i recently lost my mother as well. Sympathy= her mother passed away and we respond, oh no, that must be so hard for her,i cannot imagine if I lost my mother. In this day and age, emotions &feelings are getting in the way of being able to persevere- to be able to know we can rise above. Knowing that life has more for us than being stuck in our own heads! You all can do this!!

Excellent show! Lastly, Nubians have the most unique hair in the 🌎. Black hair is ALWAYS questioned. ALWAYS. Those "people" who hate US are simply pathetic. When Black people were imported as slaves to the Americas, one of the first things "they" (filthy dogs) did was make us cut and cover our hair. The way we Nubians organize our hair is historic and powerful. It was once used as a tribal marker. I truly enjoyed this show.

I am sorry people have tried to control how you harmlessly express yourselves. I agree it was culturally robbed of their hairitage (if I may make a pointed pun) Heritage of culture broken by violence is theft of identity and I truly appreciate the conversations I have witnessed around the topic. Other people's hair shouldn't be a thing, like Kayla said about being on set, hair shouldn't be a thing, but is often her one complaint about production, stealing away to her trailer to Fix whatever had been done, or sucking it up and having to ignkre not feeling good about how she has been made up. nor should many of the atrocities of the past and present of ongoing discrimination, miseducation, and irrational fears projected on to people because of natural biology. And one of the many aspects of the topic of culture erasure that are necessary conversations to hear and learn from and have. It's healing for me too. ❤

50:20... she's saying "ground" and "grounding", but I don't understand what she's saying in this context. "Grounding" is the practice of being barefoot in a natural setting. Feet on grass and dirt. Is there another, niche meaning?

Michael, google search.... grounding for empathic care. The 1st result has 24 grounding techniques. As an empath, I absolutely loved hearing Kyla speak about it. I mentally bubble myself as a way to protect my energy, and also as a way not to absorb the energy of others. Amusement parks were so difficult for me. A majority of people who are there are NOT AMUSED. Another tool for empaths is cord cutting. Too much to say, but google cord cutting for empaths & highly sensitive people. Mayium, let's have an entire show about this topic.

There are many methods of grounding. The one you mention is literally called grounding or Earthing, but there are many methods from many practices some tracing back to ancient indigenous cultures, and shamanic practices, including the one you mentioned. Thankfully there are so many and they can be adapted and personalized to what works for you to feel safe centered and present within the body and self. It is one of many steps that can be utilized to provide protection and reinforce personal even family resilience from adverse or incongruous energies and reactions to events and experiences. The one thing I guide most people to is to seek and discover for you what truly works and produces results no matter how bizarre or far fetched some may seem as long as they are not harmful methods to you or others, it can be freeing and healing in more unexpected ways than what may be the initial motivators to learn new things outside of our comfort zone, assumptions or skepticism. Hope this helps!

@@d.d.p.parker3671 they aren't paid anything. A talking head like Bill Maher gets paid 5 million a year from HBO. Plus all of his private speaking engagements plus all of his comedy shows and all of those are written by writers a lot of which are making $15 an hour. I worked in Media and I was doing all the work and got paid 8 dollars an hour while the hosts were all getting 7 and 8 figures

C’mon you guys please straighten the frames on your walls before you shoot an episode. I mentioned this very early on. I’ve been listening to your podcasts while driving so I never look at the episodes. For this episode, because I LOVE “Call Me Kat” and Julian,Kayla and Mayim I watched it. All of a sudden the camera pulled back and showed the four of you at the table which was unique and cool. BUT then I saw the wall and the frames were still not straight….ugh someone needs to pay attention to this. Sorry but all details need to be paid attention to. Thank you.
