Rainn Wilson (The Office, Six Feet Under, @metaphysicalmilkshakewithr7882, @Participant) joins Mayim and Jonathan in the studio as their first ever in-person guest to discuss his nerdy childhood, growing up with social misfit parents, and the evolution that therapy has provided to every area of his life. He explains how feeling unloved and alienated as a child in a petri dish of dysfunction led to anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and addiction issues. Rainn admits to learning early on in his acting career to embrace playing the role of an alienated misfit, and opens up about his meditation process and the tools his faith gave him in finding his own path and identity. Mayim and Rainn bond over being band geeks and chess club members and the expectations, insecurities, and limitations that come with being sitcom character actors. They examine the similarities between a recovery journey and spiritual journey, the benefits of going to AA even if you’re not an alcoholic, and reasons some individuals might be resistant to therapy.

Love Brendan Fraser! My all time favourite of his is “ With Honours”, also featuring Joe Pesci, Moira Kelly, Patrick Dempsey, also one of my favourites & Josh Hamilton. ♥️. The movie in a nutshell, as Joe Pesci’s character said “ I’m a bum. But…I’m a Harvard bum” 🤩

As a very tall older black man, 60, 6'8", I'm considered eccentric. A Harvard grad and a dedicated rock and roll guitar player, I'm considered odd to many, but I manage to live. Seeing you play an intelligent nerd is ironic, seeing that you are an intelligent nerd, but more attractive than the character! Take care.♥️

I loved this episode. My only issue is with the characterization of an atheist as someone without any type of social consciousness. "I like spearfishing....". Many atheists take this life we have as the only opportunity there is to do good. Selfishness is not restricted by religion or the lack of it.

If Rainn Wilson doesn't like when people try to play (the I was a nerd card) then I better take a minute to think about it and I've come to the conclusion that I was just a regular kid in school because I was always friends to all others whether they were nerds, bullies, snobs, jocks geeks or whatevers I was just a regular kid trying to get along with everyone untill I transformed into a super cool NINJA atleast

I like he character over the real thing. Rainn is a very cocky narcissist who thinks he’s an expert about absolutely everything. Meanwhile, he believes magical Boogey Germs are out to get him. Funny how he’d do a 180 in his religion of the Germ Theory if a Republican was in office.

Being weird, odd, eccentric, "out there", etc... are all compliments in my book..lol. Not too long ago, I was in a grocery store and a little girl was twirling around, acting goofy, and her mom said to her, "stop being weird" (not in an overly mean way) and I piped in and said, "But being weird is the highest of compliments!" - She laughed..lol. I'm 32 and I'm the weirdest, strangest, oddest, most awkward person you will ever meet.

It always amazes me when Miyam discusses how her self image was shaped by her early days in the industry and not feeling conventionally pretty. (paraphrasing) I wish she knew how many kids were influenced by her role as Blossom. I wanted to dress just like her and thought she was so much more relatable then other teen characters around that same time. I wish that her influence was something she had been able to notice.

As a former band nerd and awkward girl -- and fellow therapy long-termer -- I can totally relate. That's one reason I loved TBBT immediately. And I get what an eye-roller it is to have gorgeous people talk about how tough they had it as kids. But Charlize Theron has been through some sh*t: her baby teeth were removed because she was put on heavy-duty antibiotics as a young child, and so many of her teeth rotted that they removed the ones that were left, leaving her without teeth until she was 11 y.o. Theron also witnessed her mother kill her alcoholic, abusive father in self-defense, after he tried to shoot them. When Charlize was 15. So, you guys might want to rethink the FU to Theron. We really don't know what other people went through, what kind of abuse or other stuff they experienced, without checking it out (and sometimes, not even then, if it's not made public). Just a thought.

The reason I loved mayim was really blossom..cause I grew up with that show..but I also went to UCLA..that was my school..but because I'm a little older than mayim..I didn't run into her! But I'm also a member of the bahai faith! I want to add that the feeling mayim had at Haifa..I experienced at home many times..when I'm really down and there's no one to help me..god or whoever it is ..its like a drug..comes and comforts me! And it's when I'm real desparate for help or when I'm about to loose my faith in God! I also recommend mayim to see the nde of renee pasarow..that was amazing to me..to give me a glimpse of next life..and of course there's other ndes..and I believe that all prophets are really one spirit or the same sun coming back in a new day and when we go to next life..the sea of joy is where the prophet is ..but it seems like to a Christian that prophet is christ ..to a Jewish person its moses..to muslims its Mohammad..and to bahais its bahaullah..but it's really the same spirit ..its really what we call in the bahai faith..the ancient beauty..meaning really its the same sun coming back in a new day and the bahai faith believes that the reason we have so many religions is that every age has its particular requirements and religion gets renewed with time..cause the requirements of time changes as we humans evolve..its called progressive revelation! We basically really believe in evolution in all areas..cause God is not the one who is evolving..but its us! And the prophets are also not evolving..but the teachings they give to us is like going from 1st grade to 2nd grade and so on..it changes because we are evolving! And that we are here on this earth to work on our values!

You guys ARE THE BEST ONES!!!! Problem quickly fixed! 👍🏼🙌🏼 Even with my actual headache bc previous “black hole” thing, I enjoyed the three of you together a lot. I adore Jonathan “taking the seat” (you go, boy! ) And we have such an exceptionally funny but also deep and profound episode about how a disfunctional family can hurt one of their members, how “I’m not that way” or “I’m unusual” and quirkiness can be so beautifully & bravely overcomed. And Rainn is the great example. I liked a lot the spirituality talk the three of you at the end of the episode, and Mayim’s experience of “something, somehow” at Haifa Bahaí praying room. I’ve experienced something like that, so difficult to explain, in a very small ancient and quite abandoned Romanesque chapel at the Pyrenees..Thanks Mayim & Jonathan for this, again, beautiful little 💎gem! And for your efforts adressing a technical problem so quickly! 💜

This is such a great thing you are doing and I’ve a feeling this may direct me in my mental health path. I am very spiritual but not so religious, but don’t want to screw it all up. Thanks for being out there in front of the world baring all that is, yet providing ways to seek help and not feel like one is aline in this. Thanks to Jonathan for noting the time period of your shows as the zeitgeist for turning the tables on making nerds cool. Now that we have come out of the woodwork, there's no going back! Just finished watching this and a few things came to mind. Therapy, in my 20's I became familiar with Voice Dialogue work, it was so beneficial for me and enabled me to really dive into me. I also have for maybe over 30 years been journaling, journaling on tape, I call it Ramblin Rose, because I just ramble and at times that is so helpful and needful. Now 30 years later I'm curious as to what I thought 30 years ago. For those who can't afford therapy, journaling, talking into a recorder of sorts, like podcasts today, where you explore who you are, helps you figure out who you are, establishes a sense of calm. Question for Mayim how are we going to take care of all the children who are growing up with parents who can't parent and those children don't have the foundations to figure out how to step out into the world.

I enjoyed your time with Rainn. Like your other "interviews", he was very open and introspective about his life and career. Fascinating to be part of as an observer. Thank you for what you do, and Jonathan as well. You are a great team and it is fun to see what you do. Much love from Kim in Canada 🇨🇦

This was the best episode ever! I too had a transcendent experience at the Shrine of the Báb in Haifa that Mayim mentioned. I was bowing down at the threshold on the last day of my 9 day Baha’i Pilgrimage and felt this torrent of energy coming down through the crown of my head. There was a feeling of pure love and I wished I could’ve stayed there forever. But there were a long line of other pilgrims wanting to pray there so I had to leave. It was the only time so far that I’ve felt that and it was life-changing.

Remarking on the topic of the 25min mark: I can highly relate to being the girl who's found her comfort zone, but till doesn't quiet fit in. I drive a camaro, play paintball on the weekends, and use a tactical bag as my purse (excellent back support). I fit in more with guys than woman. It's not easy sticking out of the crowd and being your own person. I commend anyone who has the courage to do so. ❤

Funny, knowing Rainn is known and celebrated for being a little odd, I didn’t think twice about him not being on camera, just thought- ok thats Rainn….. keep them coming Mayim, this podcast is a huge positive in my week! ✊
