Made entirely in the summer of 2018, I just forgot to release it. Seriously. Just fell through. Demotivated, probably.
A concept album about sales. The sister album "SPINNING" takes place somewhere in the middle of here. This was made months before SPINNING.
Released December 20, 2019.
All songs written, performed, programmed, produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Kyle Landon. All videos directed by Kyle Landon. Thanks to Michaela for the voicemail.
Recorded in Summer Square 2018.
2024 writeup. Oooh this one's gonna be a bit different since I gotta talk about the videos too. So why make videos for every song? Just wanted to challenge myself, nothing more to it. This album is shrouded in mystery for me, it was made very quickly, mostly in order. This was the album that originated my process of making up a tracklist first before any songs were written, though two songs ended up getting cut; one named "Who You Wish You Were" and the other "Just Let Me Think". Conceptually, the whole album is about me being a musician shrouded in obscurity, then deciding to sell my soul, and then suffering the consequences of it. You may have noticed that I recorded this and some other things at "Summer Square". Summer Square is not a recording studio or anything, it's just a name I came up with for my room. In the summer, thanks to its positioning and airflow and insulation, it becomes the hottest room in the house, and there's nothing I can do about it. I wrote a song about it in 2018, called, guess what, Summer Square. The chorus goes:
"trapped in a summer square
sink inside memories bare
i have no friends in there
this heat never prepared"
You Told Me to Quit. Yeah, nobody ever actually did, but I thought it was a compelling idea for a song. The birds at the beginning are birds I feel like I've been hearing my whole life. They have a peculiar song they sing and I wanted to capture it somewhere in my discography. No meaning to it other than that. I guess if I think about it now, I could interpret it as a beautiful song being sung by nature for the sake of itself, to contrast with the unnatural journey with music I'm about to take. The song itself is a weird one, like, what genre is this?? It jumps from movement to movement but I feel it represents my state at that time well. This song captures my attention well every time I hear it. I don't think I have anything else quite like it. The video is just me chilling in my room. Really, all of the videos are that lol
Nasty. Yeah this song's gross. One day I was home alone and was messing with my microphone while leaving my speakers on and of course, it started feeding back, and that's the sample you hear for most of the song. This is the part of the story where I seek out new employment and sign some papers. "selling out for peaches cuz cream" is a crazy bar, I'll get my props someday. I feel like I never saw the casting couch used as a meme until after I made this.
Money's Good if Money's Great. Outstanding song, to me. Sounds truly hellish. This is the level of drama I'm always reaching for. This song is about people who allow themselves to get into peculiar situations. The ending "where did all the good men on earth go?" section is from a completely different unreleased song and I genuinely have no idea how I came up with putting it there. For the video I taped my phone to the ceiling, wore my Lil Ugly Mane longsleeve, and laid down on a greenscreen. I was pretty limited at the time but looking back, I respect the effort.
Make 'Em Care. This song got a groove to it. The transformation into pop superstar is progressing... This song has a genuine swagger (to me at least) that I can't deny. There's a genuine cocky confidence in there, its hip-hop, plain and simple. I love how gross the drums are, I just squished them all together with a compressor and now every sound is just fighting to be heard. As for the video? Those aren't my plants, that ain't my dog, I was just in a lucky place for that kinda thing. The things pop culture worships...
