"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

USA held Phillipines for 50 years. ONLY reason we let it go in 1946 was because of racism. They were USA citizens, and we JUST fought a war to get them BACK from Imperial Japan! If we didn't get rid of them, 25% of our population would be phillipino. And no white people in USA wanted that--- 15% are already black! Bye Phillipines, sorry we are so very racist! As someone who has been in tech and IT for over 25 years this trip is no accident and has nothing to do with Taiwan as a friendly jesture. This is nothing more then corporate aid to the semiconductor industry in Taiwan. Over 70% of all semiconductors and CPU are built in Taiwan. If anything happens to that supply chain it will cause massive issues on a global scale. Another reason for national security why it is never a good idea to completly outsource your manufacturing outside on a complex global econonmy on such a critical component in a region that is already has high tensions.

You’re spot on, the reason why the chip shortage is even a thing is because most consumer electronics use the 20 gauge semiconductor which has become standardized and a single TSMC plant that makes them burnt down, affecting the entire global consumer electronics industry.

Exception that TSMC is opening two 5-nm fabs in Arizona with plans for a total of 4, Samsung is opening 1 in Arizona, NXP is opening 1, Samsung is opening 1, and Intel is building 2 in Ohio and that was before the CHIPS Act. If anything, the 12+ new fabs scheduled to be built in the US undermines the importance of Taiwan, and so this explanation that this has something to do with protecting Pelosi's investments makes no sense. If anything, she's shifted her investments to take advantage of the CHIPS Act.

I’ve also heard it said that, China has embedded the Taiwan card so deeply into their political culture to use as a rallying point that it would be inconceivable to them to just let Taiwan go because of how terrified that the regime would be that their own people may think or behave in a way the regime doesn’t like. That’s why it’s so dumb that something so small is such a hot topic issue. Because China knows it will lose too much face internally, and that is the start of the downfall of authoritarian Systems Taiwan is happy to take American assistance then that’s fine, even though I don’t like American imperialism dressed up as keeping the peace. The only thing that I did find laughable is Nancy talking about democracy, considering the way America is going internally, as always, the Americans shouldn’t be lecturing anyone about freedom and democracy. On one hand, I agree with Kyle that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was unnecessary and sparked worryingly damages and further escalation that could have been avoided. But at the same time, the blame on that is more on China because the CCP is now ignoring reality. So if a hot war were to break out because of this, the fault wouldn’t be on Taiwan or the US. If u think American policy toward Taiwan is about supporting freedom your falling for the 100th iteration of the same scam. We propped taiwans right wing authoritarian leaders who committed human rights abuses when it was useful we supported one China when we wanted access to their markets, and we support their independence now as a means to threaten China. US officials openly have called for stationing nukes in Taiwan, they want to take away chinas control of the shipping lanes of the South China Sea, Taiwan is also the only logistical staging ground for offensive action against mainland China, as seen by ww2, just like ukraine is the only reasonable place to stage a land invasion into russia. If Taiwan wants independence that’s fine but China won’t let it happen so long as the US is hell bent on Balkanizing China, and any US attempt to facilitate their independence is merely to use them against China. There’s dozens of countries the US could choose to make a freedom fee good project out of, there is A GOOD REASON that they ignore them all and pick Ukraine and Taiwan to hyper focus on. This has nothing to do with standing with freedom and democracy, your ignorant lying or a joke if you would consider what America has as real democracy at this point too. We openly support 75% of all dictatorships in the world. After half a century of overthrowing democratic nations and installing right wing dictators

Kyle's weakness on foreign policy is shining through. Take, for example, the international community recognizing the RoC as China instead of the PRC. Why is that Hubris? The RoC was formerly the official government of China, and then a rebellion overthrew them. If the Mossadegh government in Iran fled after the US/UK coup, instead of whatever did happen to them, and, from somewhere else, exclaimed that they were the rightful government of Iran, would Kyle be out here calling it arrogant if other countries decided they wanted to recognize Mossadegh even though an American backed puppet dictator was in control of the country? Sure, at some point, you're going to have to recognize and deal with the new government, but that's hardly a clear cut and obvious line.

There were people living on the island long before the KMT claimed sovereignty for themselves. I think the native people of Taiwan have been neglected and are rarely ever mentioned. Not having to reinvade the mainland is not the issue, it’s abandoning their anti-CCP stance, which is literally the threat to the KMT and ROCs existence. As a Chinese who is still in China, I have been raised to be offended by any claim that resembles Taiwan being its own independent country. When I was studying in the States, I got uncomfortable every time my friend from Taiwan claims to be Taiwanese instead of Chinese. Ironically, we would love the old take that Taiwan is the true China a lot better. Over time, I have learned that people from Taiwan believing that they should be independent is not a big deal, but most of my Chinese fellows still passionately hate anyone who would not agree with CCP on the Taiwan issue. We were taught to see Taiwan as a part of our community, and any claim to hint otherwise is interference in China's internal affairs. Disclaimer: I do not think being offended by the video is reasonable. I am just writing this to explain why Chinese people really find discussions like this one offensive. I love kyle but the take that if China invaded Taiwan they could “probably weather the storm” of economic sanctions as well as stating that the U.S. would be the more isolated party shows a huge misunderstanding in geopolitics. This still undeniably would have been untrue at chinas geopolitical peak (before more recent covid strains revealed the flaws in their zero tolerance policy), when the US had the global laughing stock as their president (Trump), and any time pre or post the Ukraine war. Kyle needs start reading up on 21st century geopolitics if he truly believes what he said in that video regarding China’s economic and strategic positioning.

@@Ainttrippin China’s reliant on other countries for essentially all of its existential resources while the U.S. is the complete opposite. Also the US holds the world’s reserve currency where as China holds an unstable one that they print at 3x the rate as USD some years (like this one) 5x the rate and saying their economy is built on pillars of sand is an understatement. This isn’t to say the US is morally just or frequently making intelligent decisions but China is wayyyyyyyyy worse off if guns/ sanctions start flying. That’s also an incredibly condensed version missing a ton of important points but hopefully you get the jest. If Kyle had someone like Peter Zeihan, Thomas Piketty, or Richard Wolf on he would have this similar commentary and very likely agree.
