My wife and I just watched and we just bought bikes last week. We keep saying had they sold us the bikes and recommended hooking up with a coach we would have thought it was the worst upscale attempt ever. Going out and riding twice, I’m like I need to search KZbin. Now I’m like wishing that was common to hire a coach. April is lucky to have u. Priceless

I've watched a ton of KZbin videos about MTB skills and this is one of the best. So many great tips in one video! The way you explained using your heels to balance your weight in corners has helped me instantly. When I hit some tight turns I started to think of it like I'm digging my heels into the dirt to get extra rear grip.

Great job, I find a simple nuance is using the knee and foot position. When the knee is ahead of the foot (ankle) the front has weight. When the foot is ahead of the knee, the weight is rearward. This is a simple immediate and easy to gauge method. In the chunk and jank, estimating where the hips are versus the rear axle is harder than awareness of the knee and foot. Also the feeling of driving the bike through the bottom bracket(feet) with light touch on the handlebars helps keep positioning good.

love this so much. wheelies are cool, but this is something that is way more useful on day to day riding. this is such a good explanation of the nuance that you experience while riding but don't necessarily understand "why" things feel different. Very well done!

Thanks! Yeah I really wanted to do this one and have it as a reference point before doing more advanced lessons. I think the progression tree should be something like - riding position > short manual > wheelie> longer manuals> drops > bunnyhops ....ect. But without understanding that big foundation of riding position nothing else really makes as much sense :)

Kyle Warner - Mtb yeah this is fundamental stuff. I keep hearing guys talk about breaking the connection between you and the bike. Basically trying not to be so stiff on the bike and let it flow under you. I this this vid was touching on that, but would love to see an in depth guide to it.

Thank you. Thats a big game changer when you showed how much difference it makes just a simple heel position does. By putting on scales front and rear, thats a big proof of difference... 20lbs just by lowering the heels. Then the rests of the body parts moving up will simply follow. Probably the best video tutorial I have seen so far on riding position and, how weight shifts, break lever position and arm position makes riding efficiency so much different. Using scales was genius and a very cool perspective. weight shifts are also so important for riding faster too which many other tutorials don't stress about.

Hey Richard I got the haha. But honestly I think that everybody should have a good foundation on riding a bike off road with no suspension at all. Unfortunately it's not a thing and not everybody's going to enjoy a BMX in their youth but I can honestly say that I got an early start and the progression has been fabulous. The equipment nowadays is amazing. I grew up in lake Tahoe and I've ridden all the most famous trails there and had a hand in building most of them I've ridden squaw valley top to bottom all day long on bikes with no suspension. The experience of that leads me to ride differently the most I'm sure and when I finally do get to a full suspension bike I'm sure I'll really enjoy it....... One day I'll grow up,,😁 Hey and to be clear I'm not dissing anybody I guess I'm just so technologically starved because it has been so long since I was in the sport that I'm pretty damn happy with a Schwinn Walmart bike with basic discs and a big box shock....lol And yes I'm going to upgrade my new Schwinn just for fun before I move on to a real bike.

This is probably the best MTB fundamentals video that I have seen in years. Really like how you argument why certain things are bad instead of saying "don't do it" and "do this because it's the best way". If you're not already doing MTB coaching, I think you should.
@AprilRideMTB
@AprilRideMTB 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah i really try hard not to say "dont do this because its bad" because there are so many body types and riding styles and i am just trying to help people learn the reasons behind the style of riding that i learned which helped me win 3 national titles and podium in over 30 races in a row. I am not saying i'm the best rider or coach but I can definitely help people learn how to be more confident and safer on the bike all while going faster and having more control. Thanks for the comment!

@@AprilRideMTB same here except I'm far far away from the podium :). You're correct about the fact that this isn't an exact science and body portions and bike geometries make small yet significant differences. I think people should learn first the neutral position and then start to shift the balance between the front and backend.
