I have literally been trying this since this video came out and finally decided I was never going to get it. I even built the manual machine from your video. THEN, suddenly today for some reason it all came together in my driveway and my wheel came up to the balance point and I started riding a wheelie! I was so stoked that I kept doing it and doing it and after about an hour I was wheelieing all the way down my driveway - not sure what happened but I've doing exactly what April was doing, I just kept practicing and practicing. Didn't get better, it just suddenly happened. Amazing. I love you guys, your videos are the best. I learned to do drop-offs watching you teach April. FYI, for those out there thinking "it's too late, I'm too old", I'm 54 and started riding seriously a few months ago.

Inspirational, Dave! I just got back into MTBing a couple months ago after being away for 25 years! I'm 63 - still athletic but more creaky. Switched to a full suspension bike last week and looking forward to wheelies and some more challenging trails. BTW, Kyle and April. You have created a great channel. Keep it up!

So many “How to...” videos just end up with the coach show how good the are at the particular activity. You work with a novice, you spot the faults, you analyse them and then you correct them. As we say in driver training, “see it, say it, sort it.”. And as a result you see real progress. The progress in you girlfriend in the space of one hour was amazing. Offers hope for the rest of us.😉 Great video.

I feel you. I've not ridden for about 6 years due to injury, which I got over, and then my youngest child came along and swallowed up any spare time I would have had. My trail bike got stripped and put in a box where it's been sat up until last week when I cleaned and degreased it of essence of trail and got it back in one piece. All I can say at the moment with regards to how I feel about riding again is ouch! Lol I'm using muscles I haven't used in a long time, getting fatigued way sooner than I thought I would, and my skills have diminished massively. Only thing I have retained is my static balance. Time and practice and I'll be sending the way I use to and so will you 👍

@VirtualWoodshed
@VirtualWoodshed 3 жыл бұрын
this is so great, thanks Kyle and April!! Here are a couple more tips I learned while working these out. 1. SPEED - go into the wheelie with a moderate speed. Too slow and it will be too hard to balance, too fast and it's dangerous. 2. SEAT HEIGHT - I messed with this quite a bit and found that lowering the seat about 1 1/2" from my normal riding position was perfect. It lowered my front wheel and gave me a little wider range for the balance point. 3. LOCKED ARMS - super critical! As soon as I started doing this with commitment, things started to fall into place. Thanks Kyle! 4. SET GOALS - practice in an empty parking lot and use the spaces to set goals. Once you can wheelie one space, try for two, then three, and so on. 5. STEERING - your first "balance point" wheelies will probably go wildly left or right. Fix this by pulling up on the bars with EVEN PRESSURE on both grips. Be really conscious of this! Use your knees, legs and core muscles to counter steer when you start to drift. 6. BRAKES - once you've got the feel of lifting the front wheel and can wheelie a short distance, lay off the brake. Yes, you will loop out a lot and maybe crash! But you will train your core muscles to find the balance point faster, rather than just relying on the brake. 7. DON'T PULL UP TOO HARD - I was doing this and blasting right past the balance point, looping out every time. Pull up with moderate force and keep those arms locked. Think "goldilocks" (i.e. "just right"). The front wheel probably doesn't need to be as high as you think! 8. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! - it took me about a month of practicing these every single day for about 30 minutes before things started to really come together. One dirty little secret of wheelies is that it takes *strength*, so if you're out of shape like I was, it will take time to build up those key muscles. Added bonus, you will start to get ripped and probably lose weight! Good luck!

Considering I wasn't able to pull the from wheel more than 5 cms, in 2 hrs I got to the point where I can pull it around 30-40 cms, and stay like that for like 5 secs. It's so great to have someone explain something I just know instinctively, and even better to see the results of your observations/teaching work so well. I hail from the 1960s and grew up in the UK riding "trackers" (racing bikes converted to single speed, with spuddy tyres and wide handlebars) in the 1970s, banana-seated Choppers and then BMXs in the 1980s. I learned to wheelie before I was 10yo. I used to be able to wheelie at a walking pace, using my brake to modulate speed, for as long as I wanted, including wheelie-ing around corners. It was as normal to me and my friends as walking. After years of not cycling, I returned to it about 11 years ago in my (then) early 40s and although I don't have the leg-strength of my youth, I chose a hardtail MTB specifically because it had short chainstays and a lightweight airshock fork which made it amazing for wheelies. That was literally the ONLY criteria I had when choosing a bike. Now in my 50s, I cycle about 4000 miles a year, mostly on country lanes and trails. I'm still on that same 26" wheeled hardtail (although it's a bit of a ship of Theseus with new everything except the frame and forks) and I still amaze my friends and colleagues when I pop a wheelie. None of them can which I find absolutely amazing and wonder how they grew up not being able to. As I'm typically 10 years older than most of them, I guess they grew up with stronger thumbs than my generation (playstation etc) instead. Getting a wheelie just right is one of those sheer joyful moments in life, like playing drums, or a long rally of table-tennis, or drifting my sportscar. One thing I can't do is a manual. I watch those kids doing one handed manuals on those Critical Mass events. Even at my age, I think they're as cool af. I'll check out your other video of that and give that a go next. Couple of points I've learned since I re-started riding again - the first is that it's harder to wheelie with SPDs - well, it isn't but you need to be supremely confident to try it with SPDs,. the second is that disk brakes snatch a lot more than old fashioned rim brakes making modulation a little harder/different.

I've been trying to learn wheelies for the first time, and a lot of this stuff really helped. What I didn't expect was how much core strength it takes, at least at first. I can feel my abs crunching in as I try to hold the front end up and find the balance point.

Hey Kyle. I am brand new to mountain biking, and just dropped a decent amount on a brand new nice Hardtail. The wheels are a lot bigger than my old shitty XC bike, that I only used to cruise around town. It has been a big change, and I have been especially struggling on manuals, being a small rider. Only about 120 lbs soaking wet haha. I could not figure out why my wheelies were not working at all, and when I came inside from practicing today lo and behold you had uploaded a video on wheelies. I think it’s the timing of my pop, and the seat height. I’m excited to get back out and try again later today.

Dear Kyle and April, I discovered your videos a week ago, and your cheerfulness, low-key attitude and your rookie-oriented tips rekindled my desire to do more in the bike than just riding for 50 or 70 km on weekends, in spite of my 39 years of age. I believe that old dogs can learn new tricks. I always wanted to be able to do the very stuff you are teaching! And despite that Agility is not my middle name, Tenacious is, so I tried most of your suggestions for manuals and wheelies (I didn´t try drops because there is nothing near home to drop from). However, in my bike (Trek Procaliber 6, 29" wheel, size L) it is extremely difficult to transfer enough weight beyond the rear axle vertical axis. Due to the long chainstay, the drop bottom bracket, or a combination of both. I can wheelie some meters, and I think I will handle it with practice. But manuals, and therefore bunny hops... impossible to me. Do you have some extra suggestions? What is more, if you happen to have a 29" MTB, it would be great to have another video of these tricks on it! In Uruguay, and many places of South America, not many people can afford to have more than one bike, so almost everybody has only a normal XC MTB, mainly 29". Even full suspension bikes are rare, for the price and because we don´t have mountains, or tracks. I know that 29" MTB are far from ideal to learn this stuff, but this is what we have. And I am pretty sure you can perform any of these feats in any bike, eyes closed. Regardless if you can reply this or not, thanks both again.
