1. _The Sing-Off_ provided assistance with arranging and choreography for the bands, but Pentatonix never availed themselves of that assistance. Basically, they had spent the entire two previous months perfecting their own techniques in both of these areas. And make no mistake, on *this* performance the choreography is absolutely vital - arguably as important as the arrangement. Would the choo-choo trains Shawn remarked upon have worked nearly so well if we Hadn't seen Mitch and Kirstie *being* trains slowly passing each other? The choreography was also a major part of the setup for Mitch's solo, with Mitch slowly moving more front and center as they sing so that when the time comes he's right where he needs to be. And the movement of the rest of the band *during* his solo is very expressive. More on that later. 2. A bit of backstory: The producers of _The Sing-Off_ were aware that Mitch and Scott are gay, and they did *not* want that coming out on their "family-friendly" show, so they went to extraordinary lengths to prevent that revelation. They were the ones who chose and provided the clothing Pentatonix wore; they were afraid that if they allowed PTX to choose their own clothing Mitch and Scott would dress gay, whatever that means. They also pushed Kirstie to wear more revealing dresses than she was comfortable with. But beyond that, they thought Mitch's voice was effeminate. They couldn't stop him from singing, but they wished they could, and they did things to try to repress him. And since promoting Mitch was one of the main goals of Pentatonix it's an understatement to say that Pentatonix had a problem with this attitude, above and beyond their basic problem with the prejudice against gay people. Season 3 of _The Sing-Off_ had a rule that they'd never had before and never had again: Each band must choose *one* performer, at the beginning of the season, who would be their lead performer all season long, in all performances. And the producers informed Pentatonix that PTX didn't get to choose; their lead performer *must* be Scott. Scott is just as gay as Mitch, but they weren't worried that his baritone would give it away. And strangely enough, the producers apparently never told the judges about this rule, because the judges never said a word about it when Pentatonix broke the rule, as they did repeatedly, every time they made Kirstie one of the lead singers. The eleventh performance, which was basically a duet between Scott and Kirstie, was Pentatonix pushing back against the single lead performer rule. Their Britney Spears medley in the 6th performance was another push back against this rule. And *every time* they broke the rule, the judges praised the decisions they'd made. This is one of the reasons they did so well against the other bands; the other bands obeyed the rule, even when it caused problems with their performances. By the twelfth performance, Scott had been lead vocalist for 10 weeks running. He was tired. Worse, he had a cold. They had a good arrangement for "The Dog Days Are Over," and they had good choreography, and they knew it. What they *didn't* have, or so they thought, was the voices to pull it off. Their dress rehearsal had been an out-of-tune disaster. They fully expected their actual performance to repeat that disaster; they expected to go home in second place after this performance. There was just one thing they could still retrieve from the looming catastrophe; they could *finally* introduce the world to the wonder that is the voice of Mitch Grassi. 3. So *now* look at the choreography of Mitch's solo. The rest of the band turn their backs on the audience. This says three things: To the judges and most of the audience it says "This is Mitch's show right now. Listen to Mitch!" It also says, "Right now, Pentatonix is fully embodied in Mitch Grassi. Yes, the rest of us are here, but Mitch is our representative. We put our full trust in him." But to the producers, and those who know what the producers have been doing to Pentatonix, it says "And *this* is what we think of you!" It is a figurative raised middle finger to the producers, even as they do the very thing the producers have spent two and a half months attempting to prevent. Then it's time for Pentatonix to provide Mitch with some harmony. They can't do that with their backs turned; it would be disrespectful of Mitch. So they turn to the side. They're next to Mitch, supporting Mitch, but still turned away from the audience, still giving the emphasis to Mitch. They only turn fully back to the audience when Mitch cues them for their wall of sound big finish. But also note the other thing that happened here. Their voices were tired; Scott had a cold; they feared they'd be out of tune; and yet, they nailed it. They came out and did their best, for Mitch, and their best was spectacular. That vocal fry on Scott's last note was not deliberate; that was Scott's voice giving out entirely, but by then it didn't matter, because they'd just delivered the performance that would win _The Sing-Off._ If you enter "Pentatonix The Dog Days Are Over" into a KZbin search box, this performance and reactions to it are the only things that turn up. Pentatonix has never covered "The Dog Days Are Over" since. I think it's because *this* performance is definitive. This is the one that they want to stand for all time.

I hate having to admit this (but it's not my fault; my 71-year-old ears have their limits) but I can't hear the overtones at all here. I know what they sound like; I know what to listen for. I know when Avi's doing overtones because of the unique sound of the fundamental drone. But on Sing-Off performances, I can't hear the whistle-like overtones. Maybe it's the quality of the recording, but I know others can hear them, so I'm happy for that, anyway! Kudos to Kyle.

Dog Days has been my favorite from Sing-off, and until you pointed it out I did not notice the overtone singing. I don’t the the judges caught it either. So thank you for that!! The Mitch solo is so sweet I could cry, but I love watching Scott just give it everything he’s got here. He really carried it and it paid off. Fantastic performance.

From what I heard Scott has NO voice going into this performance, and their rehearsal the day of this performance was bad. They were totally off, couldn’t harmonize, etc. They really thought they were going home, that’s why they were so emotional at the end. I think Scott said his voice failed right at the end of his last note. It was crazy. And yes they put their own arrangements together for this competition.c

👉👉I'm SO IMPRESSED with Scott!! Apparently he had been really sick and struggled during the dress rehearsal to the point of losing his voice. He was SO WORRIED! (you could here his voice crack towards the end) yet he held on to that last note! I could hear Kirstie very clearly and strong. Avi and Kevin KILLING IT! And YES that was Avi doing overtone singing!! SO AWESOME!💥

The show employed Ben Bram (and I think one or two others) as arrangers to help any contestant with their arrangements if they needed it. As you may know by now, it was Ben who encouraged Scott to audition for the show. Ben and Scott did the arrangements for "E.T." (1st performance) and one of the finale songs. For the rest, the five of them did the arrangement themselves as they figure out their sound. They sat in a circle and arranged by ear, which they still do today.

This was NOT the end of The Sing Off. They did two more official performances, one with Nick Lachey and another on their own. PLUS, the winner's reveal is beautiful to see as well, seeing them so emotional after realizing that all their hard work paid off with the championship. You still have three more videos to go, as well as their appearance in the Champions (of all three seasons up to that point) Christmas special AND their special guest appearance on season 4.

The "different register" from Mitch you were talking about it kind of just how he sang back then; sadly, he would get made fun of for his high voice sometimes, and for that reason hadn't fully leaned into his countertenor nature yet. Only later would he fully develop his high registers into the ridiculously incredible state we know them in today. There's a more recent video on Superfruit where, when watching himself on The Sing-Off, calls himself "masc Mitch", meaning masculine, because of how differently his voice used to be placed.

Also the show made him hold himself back. That's why he sang so low on the sing off. They did the same thing to Austin from home free the following season. My guess is they knew there would be no competition if PTX and home free were allowed to let loose. Mitch mentioned it a video once.

Finally, I couldn't wait for you to react to this one (my fave and in the top 3 of their sing-off performances). You ended the video before seeing Avi getting emotional and saying it was a dream come true and how he would always be with PTX. What also made this performance amazing aside from everything you mentioned is that Scott had totally lost his voice the day before this performance and they were super stressed, tired, etc. His voice cake back just in time and you could just see he put his all into this performance which sealed the deal in my opinion. Great reaction as always, so glad you are back. 💞

Production offered assistance to any group requesting it for arrangements and choreo . Pentatonix and I believe the other two groups that made it to the finale or the only groups that did not ask for any help at all . So yes Pentatonix did their own Arrangements . I was really impressed with what Scott was able to pull out of himself at the end of this performance the first time I watched it without even knowing he'd had problems with his voice earlier in the day or whatever. I didn't know that he had such a powerful voice and will power. Now I do! He's a beast! I remember how frustrated I was wondering when they were going to put Mitch in his upper register when I re-watched this show after already following them for years because I'd forgotten how it went down when it originally aired. I was rooting for Pentatonix at the time. I remember how surprised I was that they were never off key except one time and I was so blown away that it sounded like there were instruments playing when there weren't any. When I re-watched it, I was glad they finally allowed Mitch to sing a little bit higher then that lower register the production of this show told them to keep Mitch in after hearing how high he could sing in Lady Gaga's "Telephone" that they auditioned with. That was a terrible thing for them to do to a group and a horrible thing to say to a human being, that his high-pitched voice gave away his sexuality and that the group was to keep him in his lower register for the competition. Hadn't production ever heard of the Vienna Boys Choir? How's about The Three Tenors ? Now I look at Pentatonix's recent release of Mad World, when Mitch sings the line "looked right through me" and his face is right in the camera and he's looking up from under his eyebrows, and I remember all of the times Mitch was teased made fun of ignored held down kept back and how high is anxiety levels are and he is doing it anyway. Successfully. since nobody in this audience knew what he could actually do and that he was being held down by production, The group did a good job strategically letting him sing something a little bit higher on the the very last song before America voted to pick the winner. PTX picked the perfect people to do a duet when they pick Mitch and Matt in Mad World for those lines which really surprised me. but that's a whole different video! 😂 Point is I think everybody did so well on this number! But I really noticed Scott and gained a ton of respect for what he could do. Even more than I'd already gained during the competition. And I don't think the judges noticed Avi's overtone one single time during this entire competition. I wish he'd have gotten that recognition. Great to see you again!

Told ya. [smirk] Being an old fart, I fell in love with PTX on episode two, season three of the third season of the Sing Off. Mitch was about three or four times awesome in this stunning song. But so was every other member of the group. Avi was phenomenal with his bass line and, oh, by the way, he can do overtone singing. Flawlessly. Kevin's beatboxing was incredible, Kirstie wasn't used to her real potential here, but I wonder if she was still recovering from her vocal issues a couple of weeks earlier. And then there's Scott. His vocal issues could well have pushed him to focus on the emotions of the song, which I think made his performance the best of all his Sing-Off appearances. I have watched this video at least a hundred times and guarantee that many of you Pentaholics have my total beaten by a long shot. Still, I never ever tire of it.

In particular this time it felt like Scott was one hundred percent "All In" in terms of absolutely being committed to it. Not just the individual performance but this one was where 'i felt like he'd committed to this group and this career and this life. Not just "if it works out" but "no matter what."

Always great to see a PTX reaction on here ^_^ Kyle, HIGHLY recommend that you watch the mini-interview post-performance for this one! I think it's the best yet and shows how close the group had become, and there's definitely plenty of genuine emotion too. You can just tell how hard they've worked, the relief they feel afterwards, and most of all, how much they love what they do.

Remember this was back in the days they were an unknown. We hadn't heard singly what Mitch's voice was. We kind of understood he was a high tenor, but not it's soft clarity. The judges thought they were giving them this song as a challenge but I think it was right down their alley. It's what they "Do".

Are you planning to do any Superfruit (Scott and Mitch's side project)? It's funky stuff, especially their originalmusic (vs their just forfunKZbinvideos). Rock kid to rock kid, 10/10 would recommend. Guy.exe, Bad 4 Us, and Sexy Ladies are a few of my faves of their songs. General videos, Hip-Hop Goes Broadway (1&2) are always a fun time.

Avi was the one who knew how to do choral arrangements at this point and had been part of an award winning a capella group. Kevin was an instrumentalist.

Way back in the day I watched The Singoff and for me they were the standout group of all 3 seasons. I was ecstatic when they won. Then they completely disappeared from my radar. And I didn’t think it possible but I actually have the COVID shut down to find them again. I’ve been obsessed ever since the beginning of March.

Hey bud! I don't know if you still pay attention to your KZbin channel anymore, but I thought I'd come by and leave a comment. I've seen more reactors than I can count, and you are hands-down my favorite, and I think about you all the time. You showed up on my home page today, so I decided to spend a couple of hours watching some of my favorite Pentatonic videos with you. I know you were having a hard time when you were posting these, so I hope you're doing okay. I was sad when you stopped posting, and this is a ZERO PRESSURE comment, but I just wanted you to know how great of a reactor you are!

You mentioned the arrangements. They did their own arrangements. The show did have advisors if any of the groups asked for help. The more the groups asked for help, the faster they were voted off the show. Pentatonix never asked for help. Scott does most of the arrangements, with help from their manager. They are so smart about it

Missed you.....5 Brilliant artists....my fav has always been Avi. You're the first I've heard give credit to his 'overtones' Kevin usually got the credit from the judges for those sounds....Avi did them in quite a lot of these performances.... Scott smashed the ending...The whole perfomance gave me chills.....Great analysis of the performance Kyle. ps I love how Avi blushes when he's mentioned by a judge lol

I just came across your channel. My lucky night. Not only do I love Pentatonix, I am a huge Sing Off fan as well. This trip down memory lane with you has been extraordinary. It's hard to put into words but your reactions are so authentic and real. You have such a down to earth quality about you. After watching your first video, I felt like we had been friends for years. That is rare nowadays, especially on KZbin where everyone is trying to be more outrageous than the next to try and outwit the competition. Just be you. And you, my friend, have that nailed. What a breath of fresh air. I'm looking forward to binge watching your previous videos. Thanks again for highlighting such a great group of talented singers like Pentatonix.

Avi did do overtones in a couple other Sing Off songs, but it is a little harder to pick out than in this one. Strangely, none of the judges ever mentioned it even though they did mention things like the horse hooves in this one & other sound effects in other songs. I don't know if to them as professional singers it didn't seem that uncommon or if they were just focused on the things they considered more important to point out because of the limited time allotted for comments on camera. Perhaps they mentioned it to the group off camera.
