I have much to say on this one. From Avi's Overtones to the amazing vocal by Scott, and the surprise spotlight on Mitch. I had so much in my mind, that I forgot to speak of the overtones in detail. What Avi is doing is very challenging to get right and he was doing it in a competition. I have dabbled in overtone singing and it takes lots of breath and patience as you forget the tone you're making and start controlling the overtones you're releasing. I am nowhere NEAR Avi's skill. I am so impressed!

Scott lost or almost lost his voice with this song and the focus and passion came from not being able to do it in dress rehearsal. All 5 of them came out and pulled it off in spades. I was glad Scott came out and explained what this song meant to them and later the struggle with it.

Scott's dad actually paid for Kevin's airplane ticket. They took their winnings and all moved to LA to keep going. The record contract was with Lion's Gate or some other movie soundtrack record label who had no clue how to promote an acapella group. This group connected to their fans through little "out-tros" at the end of their clips to talk to their fans. Unlike all the artist who disconnected from their fans and didn't communicate, Pentatonix pushed into their social media and "Participated" with them. They became relatable and real. Also, their concerts were generational. All ages could come and get a positive experience. I'd recommend watching the Netflix video of Pentatonix on the road. Not to review, but to learn. - Bill

It was Madison Gate Records, which was a part of Sony Pictures, not Sony Music. You are right that it was a movie soundtrack label, and it was tiny--two people, both of whom had other duties within Sony Pictures. Pentatonix was their first music group (as opposed to movie soundtracks) and the label was making it up as they went along. They did a good job, though, as the PTX records released through the Madison Gate label sold quite well for something from a label that wasn't known for anything other than soundtracks. What is seldom mentioned is why they were dropped by Epic Records a week after they won The Sing Off. While the show was being produced, there was a change in leadership, and the new head of the label (a guy you of whom you may have heard, LA Reid (of "LA Reid and Babyface" fame), decided that a capella music had no commercial value. He may have been a big deal as a producer, but he was dead wrong on that decision (as their subsequent multiple Grammy Awards and chart-topping records proved). I have always been curious as to why Pentatonix agreed to another deal with Sony Music (through RCA, another of the company's labels) after getting burned by the company once. I'm glad they did, though.

From my experience, RCA is a whole other animal than Epic Records. RCA is one of the largest labels in the world. They have some of the best artists under their name. So it would be a no-brainer to sign with them if you were PTX. That's probably what ended up happening unbeknownst to the members of Pentatonix. RCA must have offered to buy out the contract from Epic Records, but only conditionally and this was told to whomever manages Pentatonix and that is why they worked so hard to build a fan base using whatever means they could. Once they reached the agreeable amount of fans, that is when RCA issued the contract and the deal was complete. Winning their first Grammy was just icing on the cake for RCA. At then end of the day, a recording artist is a sales person. They have to have a customer base to be profitable. If they aren't profitable, they will be dropped from the label.

@@JerodM That's what worries me about the drop in sales when Avi left. "PTX Presents Top of Pop vol. 1" debuted in the #10 spot on Billboard. That was the lowest They have ever debuted at. They've debuted at #1 and held the spot long enough to break a record in the past. It scared me.. but their Summer Tour was a huge money maker! They added real choreography and designer outfits, Even wardrobe changes. A little bit of sultry dancing and attitude was assigned to Kirstin and she did quite well! There's a breathtaking dance move with Scott and Kirstin during Havana, but things were kept clean enough for all ages to attend. And everyone was in good voice throughout that grueling concert schedule. Kirstin had more spotlight moments which she slayed, as did Mitch and of course Scott. Kevin and Matt had much more involvement with the audience and I loved that!! I hope they're on track back to the top of the charts, and keep that recording contract!

According to various articles, after PTX had achieved success at Madison Gate (which indeed handled mainly music clearances and compilation soundtracks otherwise), RCA made an offer to take them over, and their manager refused a number of times before they accepted, until the deal was a good one for them. Kevin (possibly others too) has said that their initial contract with Epic was a lousy one artistically -- it game them no control over their content, and they could have had instruments forced on them. So when they finally went to RCA, they were able to insist that they were an a cappella band and nothing else (except at their own request). So it worked out much better in the end. It must have been a scary time in the interim, though.

You said it perfectly, they were singing for their lives! They left nothing behind on that stage but their hearts. I cannot count the times I have gone back to re-watch that song (and the previous #11, btw reminded me of Grease) they are both my faves of the show. Again, thanks for doing this. Yes to the final songs/reveal.

Loved your reaction - Mitch's voice can get me get all soppy, too. I agree that it's great to hear Avi's overtone singing in the performance. They are only 5 people, but it almost adds another voice and they sound even more full than usual. To answer your question - I vote YES, please react to the 13th and 14th performances! The 13th starts a bit rocky, but ends, in my humble opinion, with some of the best harmonies of the whole series. And the 14th is just a fun performance, and Kirstie is very sexy in it! The "finale", where they announce the winner, is fun to see, although it kinda drags on and their performance at the end is cut short. Anyway, I really hope you do #13 & #14!

Agreed, their return the following year was awesome. They came back and slayed the audience and judges once more. The stark difference between what they had become vs. the participants that year was staggering. They came back again once more the subsequent season and did a Christmas mashup that also brought the house down.

Yes! This was their pinnacle performance in my opinion. The last two were a little contrived, and you can tell they were spent and not up to their best. Watching this, knowing they win and the record label subsequently drops them breaks my heart. Scott later said it was a blessing in disguise because they kept their fanbase going through KZbin and got with a record label that could really showcase them properly. Three Grammys, a few world tours and BILLIONS of KZbin views later...they are the little group that could. Side note, there are videos on Avi's overtone singing that you could check out. So interesting. This has been a fun ride. Now you just have a few dozen videos to go through...ALL of their covers, original music, and a few live performances and you should finish...NEVER!

Even more amazing, they continued to overcome challenges. They went on to win the record contract, but were dropped soon after. So they built a following on the Internet through constantly releasing covers, using creativity to overcome their meager budget and deftly leveraging social media. The results were too successful to ignore and they made their own deal with another label. They began releasing EPs and touring and the rest is history. Oh, and Scott is such a workaholic he wore Avi out!

search for a video, Pentatonix in parking garage where they sing "without you" for themselves in an echo-y space - and contrast that sound to their performance. it shows how extraordinarily well they sing - without mics, and listening to each other, blending so well.

Yeah, but there's something else about them you just can't pinpoint, it's the "it" factor you always hear about!! They won and have 15 million subscribers on KZbin. Home Free, also amazing, won and has only about 750,000!! The other winners don't even have KZbin pages and have faded into obscurity, more or less!! And yes, definitely. I think there's one performance left in their season, one performance as a guest in Home Free's season, and one Christmas performance a year after that as a guest before they cancelled the show forever!!

One of the songs they did on the finale was Without You by Usher in support of The Tevor Project for LGBT youth. I honestly don't really care if you react to the final performances or not but since all of their voices were really tired (they were tired mentally too) their best performances are definitely behind them at this point. But they were invited back the year after to perform in the finale as the guest artist so I would love it if you reacted to that :D They sang "I need your love" ^^

Welcome to the rabbit hole! I've been here since the Sing Off and I LOVE watching the reactions as new people discover Pentatonix. This song is the one that they (as far as I can remember) played around with using their "sound wall". They build a song up to a point that they collectively create a wall to overwhelm the audience with power... Then they drop off the other side and let the silence create a counter-impact. Their covers of Imagine, Hallelujah, and Bohemian Rhapsody use this effect and it feels like it almost breaks my heart every time. Even years later. Enjoy the ride!

Yes keep reacting to them! Jerod, thanks for going thru all their sing off videos.. I've heard each of those songs 200 times as for some reason PTX gets my sensibilities. Ben Folds talked a bit about PTX surprises..like Overtones, chew chew trains, etc. Ben also mentioned how he couldn't wait for them to work with industry top arrangers. (Like Ben Bram) And to hear them in the future as they totally hone their skills. Like you, I really appreciated this group as well as NBC for a remarkable show. The influence PTX has on the world of acapella music showed itself on season 4 with Home Free, VoicePlay etc and in the many new groups new groups to follow. Im also so excited with the way new artists in so many genres are using KZbin. I think the quality of music were hearing today is improving because this has removed industry producers whos taste in music is questionable. So the one question I have for you Jerod. Are you a Pentaholic yet? Listen to there holiday CD's Their CD of Original compositions and my favorite CD. Classics. Thats where there skills best came out singing songs I have loved for such along time. That's what made me a Pentaholic along with other Grandparents and Mom and Dads. Its like the old days. Entire families go to PTX concerts. And Jerod, your my favorite reactor. You bring real knowledge with your understanding of vocal music.

I honestly think everyone involved in the Sing-Off (producers, judges, groups, audiences) knew it was over after performance 4. Pentatonix pissed me off a little back then, by driving home the point, week, after week, after glorious week, that nobody in the show was competing with them. The producers had to try and force fake drama to keep people interested and in suspense about the final result. There’s a chance they blow it, but if they don’t, they win. Not only did they not blow it, they destroyed the competition every week. Once I got over being pissed off, I was happy to become a Pentaholic again, and resume the journey (though it was many years before I calmed down). I think what pushed me back over the edge was seeing “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” pop up in my sub feed, and I imagined Mitch singing it, and started crying. When I eventually decided I was ready to actually prefer Pentatonix to Elton John, I watched it, and started crying again, at a couple parts. I love a good Mitch slap, and a key change, and then that ending, singing perfect harmony in perfect harmony (smart asses ;) But yeah, just like with Daft Punk, they out-Elton Johned Elton John. I think that’s why Shawn got tongue tied after “Let’s Get It On,” because he didn’t want to/wasn’t ready to admit that he thinks they did it better. Me, I’ve accepted it. Ruin/fix every song for me please, Pentatonix :D

They went into this one convinced they were going to lose (because of the bad dress rehearsal and Scott's voice problems) but determined to at least give Mitch his chance, and then they nailed it. They went into it knowing they were going to lose and came out of it knowing they had won. That intensity Ben was noticing in Avi wasn't an inability to let go of the song, it was reaction to the shock of winning. Mitch, standing right next to Avi, picked up on it immediately. As soon as the song is over, Mitch grabs Avi for a hug, because Avi desperately needed that hug. It quickly changes into a group hug of Mitch as the others gather round, but it began as a comfort hug for Avi. And poor Kirstie can't quite figure out how to get into the group hug, so she settles for grabbing Mitch's elbow and doing a little happy dance - gotta *love* Kirstie's happy dance. As for the performance itself, that surprise revelation of Mitch's voice wasn't so much their secret weapon finally coming out as it was one of the major reasons they were there, and so far they'd been frustrated in every attempt to make it happen. The producers were aware of Mitch's voice, and thought it effeminate. They were also aware that Mitch and Scott were both gay, and they *didn't* want that fact coming out on their nice little family-friendly show, and they were afraid that Mitch's voice would spill the beans. So they'd made a rule that each band must have *one* designated lead singer, who would be the lead in every performance (this was the *only* year they had such an asinine rule), and they'd told Pentatonix that their lead singer had to be Scott. Pentatonix had been finding small ways to push back at this rule all season, doing things like choosing songs that required a female lead, or that worked best with two leads, one male and one female, and giving Avi and Kevin more prominence once they began to catch the attention of the judges. They'd even managed to give Mitch one minor solo, in his lower register. And in each case they arranged it so adroitly that the producers *couldn't* come down on them for breaking the rules. What they hadn't managed to do yet was reveal Mitch's actual range, and because they thought they were going to be sent home after this performance it was now or never. So, okay. They knew they were going to lose, but *Mitch* didn't have a cold, so there was still a chance of achieving part of their goal with this performance, and they set it up brilliantly to do exactly that. And then, to give Mitch the best setting for his jewel of a solo, they went out there and gave it their all, with the result that they achieved their *entire* goal. I get chills every time I watch this; it's just so beautiful.

Regarding the 13th performance, I Need You, a little warning - it's not very good. They were on a new stage and something happened that apparently they couldn't hear each other. Frankly, it's out of tune. 'Not saying don't review it, just be aware it shows clearly they are only human. The next performance with Nick Lachey, One Night (cover of a 98 Degrees song, which Nick was part of that group) is quite good. Adding: Shawn Stockman wasn't allowed to sing with any of the groups because of a clause in his contract with Boys to Men. ENJOY! Looking forward to more reactions.

I had always assumed (since the four final groups would have needed to start working on their final performance before they knew which group would be eliminated before then), that Shawn was paired with Afro Blue, a group with which he had a strong affinity, as witnessed as early as their second performance ("American Boy", which they killed) all the way through to the episode before the finale, in which he cast his vote for Afro Blue over the Dartmouth Aires. I never thought about contractual limitations.

Have you listened to any other Sing Off groups (other than Home Free)? The Dartmouth Aires and Urban Method are quite good. And of course Committed.
