What I love about their sing off performances is that if you watch only their performances, some may not be that good at first because they’ve set such a high standard for themselves, but when you watch the entire episodes and you see the other groupers you realize even more how incredibly talented they are with only 5 voices (and also hardly any experience performing as a group). And I agree, their performances are... interesting 😂 Scott and Mitch actually reacted to some of the sing off performances and cringed as well so don’t worry

Yeah, if you say to any Pentaholic, remember Avi waving his arm around - they know exactly what you're talking about. Mitch's "a little less ghetto" comment is also a classic. By the way, that "Dum da dum da da" they did during Kirstie's solo - I understand that's a riff from a Boyz II Men song, which is why the judges were laughing. Really looking forward to the next one, #7, it's my favorite. Oh, and I agree with you about Shawn's comment not mentioning her singing. For me I thought this was great because it showed that they weren’t afraid to try different things, like the sounds they were making, and that there was so much going on but they attacked it. I enjoyed the “club” sound they could make a lot! And No one could or can do transitions the way they do them in my opinion! I did get perturbed a little watching these performances about how much Shawn went on about Avi and Kevin, when the other three were every bit impressive. Not to take away from them cuz they were amazing, too. But if I had any sort of peeve about sing off it was that! So thanks for listening ha ha!

I finally just binge watched all of the complete episodes of season 3, and I feel like I have a better picture of how they did and how the season went. There were singers and groups who had highlights that were subjectively better at times, but I get why they won and I wholeheartedly agree. Bringing everything they had to each performance, like their dancing here, was just one of many reasons :-) Avi's arm wave is a common reason for chuckles for them and their fans, lol. I also would rather comments on Kirstie's contribution here be centered around her solid vocal performance, but it did take guts for her to do all of it, including the dress. She rocked it all!
@Lookinforrealmusic4 жыл бұрын
I did the same thing. The thing that stood out about PTX to me was that they came out every time like this tiny little determined army. I don't know how to describe it better than that. The other groups were sometimes better but over the whole course of the show you could count on PTX just marching out there and meticulously delivering the music. Not necessarily the choreo but the music was always there.

I like this one, though it's not one of my favorites from their Sing Off run, I'd put it right about in the middle. They did a little experimenting with mashups in the ending, that will re-emerge later in their Sing Off run and notably, in their later career. The choreo was corny, but a lot of that was pushed on them by production. The "master medley" that was probably the big winner of that week was the Dartmouth Aires "Queen" medley... it was really good, you should probably watch that one too, it's also available on the mrduckbear11 channel. You always have to remember that this was really early in their time together as a group and they're still fine tuning their sound and interaction. As others have mentioned, going forward from here they really start to hit their stride.
@UserHorologium4 жыл бұрын
@Bill Godwin-Austen --Yeah, the Queen medley was probably the best, but my favorite was the Elvis medley from Vocal Point. Their second song was an interesting arrangement, and Jake's smooth vocal was beautiful, and (as was noted by Ben) McKay just killed the third song in the medley. Of course, if you want to really talk about the Queen medley, the sing-off between Afro-Blue and the Dartmouth Aires at the end of the last episode before the finale is the definitive performance; Michael absolutely laid everything out on the table for that performance. I still think (as Shawn did) that Afro-Blue should have been the choice, but that Aires performance was *fire*. @Kyle Kholin --While I'm not a Britney groupie, I will admit that the first two songs in this medley are very catchy and yes, I like the originals too. The third song, not so much (particularly the original), but it was nice to hear Mitch's low end before it disappeared for six years, only to pop up unexpectedly in "Take on Me", where he went through quite a range, just like Morten Harket did in the original. Several of PTX's recent videos have showcased the lower ends of the group's members, including (especially) "The Sound of Silence", but most of Mitch's money moments are the diva notes (G#5!) that he hits over and over again. He became more comfortable with his upper register, and boy can he werk it. Their next performance ("Born To Be Wild") is IMO their best performance of the season, especially when one considers the small size of the group and one of the unexpected pitfalls of reality TV. Several groups had to make due without one of their members for several episodes (one of The Collective's powerhouse female vocalists had to miss an episode, one of Vocal Point's members father died right before the series started shooting, and one of the Dartmouth Aires had to leave to start graduate school late in the season) but these were groups of 9 or more, whereas PTX had only five. They were the smallest group to make it past the fifth week that season; there had been three other five-member groups, but one was eliminated after their first performance, another after their second and third (both performances were in one episode), and one after their fourth. (And FWIW, one of those groups had a standing engagement for 200 nights a year at a club in Branson, MO, and another had released two albums before their appearance on the show.) And yes, this is another episode where Kevin and Avi are specifically praised, but they deserve every single syllable thrown their way, because da-yum. (You'll see.)

With the exception of the live final show, I believe it was all pre-recorded and then edited for time and "drama"/entertainment. As a result some of the better critique of the performances was probably cut in exchange for some of the things the producers thought the viewers would want more.

It was important that they discovered their own sound by themselves. At the time Ben was the arranger for the show and he would help all the groups.

You mentioned that Mitch is singing in a deeper voice here and he is. I cant remember exactly where I read it, but it is said that in the early days he held back a bit on his higher tones because of the stigma of being gay in the industry and the stereotypical insistence of men with higher voices. He does have as a countertenor a voice span of 6 octaves and 1 tone, from A1 to B7, which is ridiculous.

I thought this was them showing what has turned out to be a major skill they have in their bag of tricks to draw on and that is transitions. They are amazing at Transitions and mashups. It has become one of their claims to fame whether I like Britney or not you just gives me a little taste of what they can figure out and just a few weeks The Avi photobomb is famous and you're not the only person that noticed it. That includes the other members of Pentatonix. And Avi's dancing... there's a saying. The hips don't lie. It is used in reference to Avi even by the man himself. I just liked the transitions and we all know Avi and Kevin are amazing but I also like hearing what the trio can do vocally that adds to the whole thing is Mitch does a lot of sfx. He adds a lot besides that golden throat of his. He also used to sing low all the time as he is a counter tenor and I think they used that fact as part of the strategy for winning this thing. You'll just have to watch and see what I mean later. Especially considering they auditioned with Lady Gaga's Telephone and Mitch does not stay in his lower range throughout that number.

Not my favorite of theirs. I appreciate that you were still respectful and appreciative despite not loving the performance 👍🏽 And not many people catch Avi’s dance skills! You’re reaction was too funny. 🤣 Can’t wait for the next video!
