Gotta hand it to you for trying to make the best of that situation. It would be nice to think that woman told you all those things because that's what she was told and she just didn't know any better. Aluminum is a soft metal and wallows easily. I have always heard it is tricky to achieve a good, solid weld. Doable though. I can tell you for sure that the floor was never waterproof. Waterproofing is something I know about from years in the tile industry. You cannot waterproof something and then drive a screw thru it. It ceases to be waterproof at that point if the screw is not treated as well. The seams should have been taped with some sort of fiber or fabric before application of the painted membrane etc.. I hope you get things sorted. You're such a nice guy and have a sweet spirit. You deserve the tiny home you envisioned! Happy trails.

It's not that I don't agree with you, but were the subflooring issues and weld breaks prior to the sale or during transport? Do you have pictures from the inside to compare the before and after?

Howdy! Aluminum is super difficult to weld due to the oxidized top layer which melts at a higher temperature than regular aluminum. You also have to use TIG welder on aluminum which is much harder to work with. It looks like there was porosity in some of the welds which probably caused the joints to fail. It could also be that when the welds cooled, they cooled too fast and caused cracks to form which got exasterbated by the vibration of the road. If those pieces were steel, 1) they'd have a much higher compressive strength and can withstand more wear and tear and 2) it's a lot easier to repair. The previous owner definitely screwed you a bit. Hope this helps! Sorry for the length. I'm an engineering student and got excited 🙃

I have the same Airstream as you and mine is sagging at the back so I have to detached the frame from above and separate the frame from the shell. The Frame is steel and the fins that come out should be steel and not aluminum (unless she did the whole frame out of aluminum) Airstreams are pretty insulated from water from underneath, the pan will keep them dry, the problem with water usually comes from above, windows, rivets, etc. there are a lot of Insta accounts that show you everything “how to” and all about the frame, shell and pan. Wishing you good luck!

By the length of the replies from the "seller" it looks like she was over compensating on the camper's attributes. NOTHING in life is that great and growing up in a family of welders, those welds look awful and I KNOW welding Aluminum is a real art and takes a very talented welder to do it correctly. Good luck, you'll get there. Maybe the people in Oregon can help!? Love from Milwaukee....>Erick

Ok, I rewatched it and have some recommendations: build an "X inside a square" out of lumber and make three of them. You might have to drill from the outside of the shell to secure the shell to the new brace/frames. If the bedframe is toast, then you need to lay new frame pieces to overlay the weld breaks - essentially LINING the old frame with a new frame bolted onto it. The shop in Oregon - do they do frames as well, or just inner decor? The flatbed truck is a good idea, no matter the cost - the trailer will then not deteriorate any further than it has. What is the length of your trailer? Would it fit securely on a 12" flatbed from Home Depot or U-Haul? You could rent the trailer and drop it off at a branch in Oregon once you get there. I see the airstream sitting WITH THE AXLE AND WHEELS REMOVED AND LAYING INSIDE IT on a flatbed trailer that you are towing... $5000 for someone to deliver it and then return to their home empty is not a bad deal, when you think about it. This from U-haul: 6'x12' cargo trailer - This is largest trailer option and is designed to meet the needs of those moving a long distance. With the capacity to hold up to 2,500 pounds, the 6'x12' trailer is capable of holding several rooms worth of furniture.

Ultimately the only support you have are tires which hold up the base by the suspension. The suspension has to hold up the floor and the floor holds up the rest of the trailer I presume. I see the walls are kind of an arch going from one side to the other but I'm not sure how that arch would help support anything other than at the top. I would think the sides would want to push outward from the weight of what they're supporting. So maybe something to prevent the sides from bellowing out? I would suggest you find some pics of the structure and how it should work. I'm just guessing. I'vd never even looked at an RV of the Lucille Ball era.

LP M. - Sadly RV’s are not cars and are not covered by the same laws. People who own airstreams know, and I mean KNOW a few issues; 1. They leak LESS but when they do leaks can be hard as hell to locate. 2. That almost airtight almost leakproof exterior has a down side, Human’s breathe cook and shower. All that moisture collects in condensation on the windows and interior walls in cool environments and flow downward into the plywood floor, which molds and rots. Replacing the subfloor is common.

Looking at your floor a problem shows up right away. That floor needs to be an unbroken span from wall to wall. That seam robs the floor of its strength. This is why those outriggers are snapping off. That subfloor is going to have to be replaced or this thing will never stay together. This looks to be a mid 70s (mine is a 74) . Its just short of 8 ft, so a full sheet of plywood (5/8 in thick) is what will go there (I wonder if Air Stream did that on purpose). Most people go with marine grade. You're going to do a little rework on this but I think it can be salvaged. What ever you do, don't start your build out until this floor thing is fixed.

the issue is that the welds being made aren't deep enough to fully turn the two or more pieces of metal essentially into one, there are actually 9 different kinds of welding and most welders are proficient in one or two and specialize... I learned how to Arc weld in highschool shop class but I THINK (could be wrong though) for your particular situation you'd need someone who can TIG weld, TIG welding uses a rod and a TIG torch and the rod acts like the molten metal version of glue essentially (im not good at explaining this but bare with me) TIG welding would be a better option for this because with other forms of welding you could end up with a thinner area at the point of junction especially if there wasn't a particularly thick piece to start with what needs to be done in order for the welding job to hold up is it needs to penetrate enough of the metal to were the pieces are essentially now one and from the video footage you've shown that is 100% not being done here you might actually end up needing to place more metal into those stress points that keep snapping apart, maybe taking a flat piece of metal that can fit horizontal to the corner so its like a triangle and then welding that into place as a sort of support beam? (like i said im not good at explaining what im trying to say and i have limited knowledge on the subject so take this with some salt)

The question too..... If she gave you a good price... The repairs will pay for itself..... Bcause Air Streams can be very very.... Very expensive... Even used. So I' m hoping you got a good deal when you bought it. Keep your chin. And try and stay calm and pisitive..... Because I bet when it's completely redone over.... And renorvated it will look great... I send lots of hugs... Abd I look foward seeing the end result. I watched the rest of the Video....20k.... Is still a good deal.... Because Air Streams sell much higher..... And that's one used.... Un renorvated.... I'm not defending the Woman that sold it to you in any way. She should have disclosed all the details in full....... And people telling you to sue her..... That would cost more money than 20k..... A lot more money. So as I said. I'm giving you lot's of hugs.... And when you get it to Oregon and it's Renovated...... It will look great.

Welder here. Be very VERY careful with who you choose to do your welds. Aluminum in particular is not an easy metal to weld, and it involves a lot of prep work and user knowledge to make a sound weld ESPECIALLY on load bearing structures. Unfortunately, a "nice bead" may only look nice on the outside while the penetration and fusion ( how the metals fuse together) may be awful on the inside. If possible always go to the manufacturer ( even if it's a vintage model) and talk to them about what metals were or could have been used ( all aluminum is not alike) and ask if they have any welding process parameters that should be followed. Then find someone who can do it with those guidelines.

Ouch, that frame is a joke. Those 1/8th inch plate aluminum "supports" for the outriggers are breaking because they have too much flex and nowhere near enough contact area for the weld. The box section also looks undersized. With an under engineered aluminum structure like that you'll constantly get fatigue breaks at the welds. And those welds looked ROUGH to begin with. On another note, awesome to see you get stuck in there and working stuff out. Every day is a school day, brother. Nice one.

That’s a shame and a sham. I have bought many things over the years that looking back I should have known better, but at the time, if you know something needs work and you are willing to do the work, you kind of accept it as it is. It needs steel reinforcements not aluminum. Maybe, maybe, she knew it was just that bad but when you came and checked it out and you agreed to buy it, maybe she thought you knew what you were doing and it was not going to be a big deal for you to fix it. Me personally, if I sell something that needs work, I let the buyer know, but many people don’t. You still got yourself an awesome home at an okay price and it is going to look fabulous when you are done with it. Or you could just resell it as is or with a bit of repairs and start again with another one. Good luck I can’t wait to see what happens with Tuba! Will she stay or will she go. 😄

I would consider leaving it at the nearest RV repair/retail shop and buying a tent for Oregon. It's nice to consider a lawsuit, but that takes time and money. It looks like this trailer is suffering severe metal fatigue. You have no idea what the history of the trailer is - how bumpy were the roads it was towed over, what it has endured before you ever saw it. You need to decide whether you want to sink more money into it or cut your losses. In the meantime, I see a lot of steel elbow brackets in your future.

Hey Kyle get in touch with Andy Rawls -You yuber that is working on an argosy trailer down to the bare bones. He is really educated about the frame and all the moving parts. My guess is the seller was taken to the cleaners with all the work that was done poorly and knew that when she sold it. At any rate I hope you have a budget that you can double on this project. Andy is a wood worker that is very talented and will make his interior so custom you might learn from his work before you do yours. These projects get very costly and it appears you have no talent for assisting.

You need washers under the head of the bolts as well, otherwise those will tear right out the minute you drive off.

sent u a message on IG. The alum shell on an airstream usually outlasts the steel floor structure, and this repair didn't sufficiently strengthen that structure. I don't think the seller had any idea; this approach looks to be a failed attempt. [What's with all the 'sue her' posts people? C'mon litigious society!!!] It should basically be a strong flatbed trailer fused to a strong fuselage. I did this with my 75 and have never had a problem in the 6 years I've owned it afterwards, with many dubious offroad shenanigans!

Well, I am not sure it will be a big help for you but there are two famous garages in your nation that can do a great work. Ian Roussel from Full Custom Garage, this man is an expert in welds. As you unfortunately see it is not given to anyone to do it correctly. As far as I know this man is in California. And he is able to do amazing things with anything even a carcass. But he likes to do very unordinary things. For more conventional results, Dan Short from DRS FantomWorks is a expert of restoration of ancient vehicles but he does not live in California. Just saying in case of it can help you, who knows 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'll say it for you, since you're being so nice. The welding job was poor and she did know that.

OMG everyone is such an expert! You have handled a very bad situation very well and kept and open mind, which is difficult. Take care of things, get it done and pursue your dreams. I believe in karma and it's a bitch; so if what you suspect is true about the seller......

You should be working with real bolts and nuts and washers... the screws and lagbolts are not designed to withstand the same sheer forces as a bolt would.

$20,000 for a shell of a classic Airstream ... Your money, your dream/reality ... Could have purchased a very nice road ready preowned travel trailer for $20k. You mention tiny home, giving up apartment to live full time in Airstream ? Hope you have a good income $ource. I could not do it, would have sought legal channels to resolve the transaction. Hope it all works out for you !
