Check out the Fujifilm GFX100s at MPB: bit.ly/366pgQZ
In this video, I'm out in Snowdonia for a few days, doing some landscape photography with the Fujifilm GFX100s-a camera that is relatively new to me, and one that I’m really excited about.
I experienced crazy weather and put on a lot of miles during the trip, exploring the mountains and also the abandoned Dinorwic slate quarry, and was able to get a really good feel for this system, including how the GF35-70 lens performs. In this video, I’m sharing the adventure, process, and images, as well as talking about why I chose this system over the 50SII, and what I love about it so far. I'll be doing a more in-depth review once I use this camera for a few more months.

The abstract about 8:30 in had a lovely 19th century feel to it. That weather and terrain were fascinating. In the US, we talk like we have a monopoly on wildness but watching KZbin has made me realize that it’s there in the UK and Canada. If I were fluent in other languages, I’d probably discover more in other countries.

The variety has been pretty cool in the UK. The landscape changes quickly as you travel, compared to the longer distances in Canada.

Last week I bought my first digital camera after having shot exclusively on film for about five years. I thought I’d never go back, but something about having the flexibility with digital is quite freeing. I primarily use it as an every day carry for when I see compositions out and about during the day. I still shot film for my main photography projects, but the digital camera gives me the ability to take images without having to worry about buying film, developing, scanning and so on

Yeah, it's funny how certain tools fit us as different stages of our journey. I was digital for a long time, and then film breathed some energy and life back into my career around five years ago, and now digital is giving me a little bit of that feeling again. I still do love working with film though, and it's not going anywhere.

Thanks for the video and pictures, brings backs memories for me, I went hiking there while stationed in the USAF at Lakenheath 1988. I have had 100s for almost a year, and it is hardware to help you expand your imagination. I never thought that there could be such a difference in quality in photographic equipment. I repeat that the previous years were, in a sense, lost years for various systems that always required a compromise. Nowadays, I always feel confident about the quality and I always know that I can get a lot out of a photo by focusing often on details without losing quality.

Beautiful images Kyle, you found some classic British mountain weather and made it work! I would love to see a video of you talking about what brought you to that part of the world and how you research the locations you chose to visit. When you mentioned hearing about the shed with all the old equipment it sounded like the kind of knowledge you pick up chatting to locals down at the pub. It would be great to hear more background like this alongside the images. Really appreciate the hard work and passion that goes into your videos here.

I recently upgraded my digital set up from APS-C to full frame with an EOS 5DII, so I understand how you feel when it comes to using it alongside film. I still enjoy and in fact prefer shooting with film but I've recently been enjoying the benefits that come with using a digital with a full frame sensor - especially when you use an an adapter for older lenses as you said too.

Congratulations on the upgrade. Wish you were back in the US Desert Southwest. I’d love to see you work that camera on familiar ground! Mine arrived just before an October road trip. The images made with it got the attention of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. I’m going to give the Nostalgic Negative ‘Stephen Shore Mode’ at least half of the credit. Out of camera jpegs need only a few tonal tweaks to be print ready, while shooting raw + jpeg allows even more flexibility in post. BTW, a Canon 24 TSE-II adapts perfectly with full coverage. It even allows for some lens shift before vignetting. I used the combo for astro shots.
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim! I miss that area as well and hope to get back there in the near future. Very cool to hear about the 24 as well! Probably a little wider than what I would need for most of my work, but I love the options that are opened up with adapting lenses. Hope you're well!

Totally agree with you about using film or digital depending on the project (and mood at the time!). Great images which capture the mood and atmosphere of the place really well. Thanks, Mark! Yeah, it was crazy up there. I had a compass and OS map of the area with me, and if I wasn't filming/shooting I probably would have kept going, but figured better safe than not. I wouldn't want to be unprepared up there in that type of weather!

Ive shot film almost exclusively for the past few years professionally. Previously I was shooting on a Hasselblad H5D 40 and honestly, I’m happier with this Fuji GFX 50SII I just picked up than I was with the Hasselblad. Being able to freely edit in Capture One and adapt my Hasselblad CFi lenses (and Hasselblad HC lenses) to this camera makes it so useful and flexible in my personal and professional work. It won’t replace my Hasselblad 503CW as I hand print the images in the darkroom and scan them in on a V850 to give me 16000x12800 pixel (approx) images which I love but it definitely holds it own for when that isn’t needed

I really like the Fuji’s, started with the X100s years ago. Since then others have been employed and the files are to my aesthetic brilliant. I really like the GFX100s but would not be liking the ding from all that Ca Ching. But you never know what’s next in the photographic journey. Im thinking that maybe the GFX50 would have a firmware upgrade for 4K at some point, I know my Xpro2 had the firmware upgrade from the initial 1080p . Always enjoy this channel, its very thoughtful and honest if you will. Cheers Kyle.

Do you have a link for the Benro tripod you are using in Snowdonia, and also to the archetype Ilford HP BW preset you are using? the images look fabulous in black-and-white.
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete! Glad you enjoyed this one. If you google Archetype Process you'll see the presets. The Ilford one is from the B&W pack. Some other nice one's in there as well. As for the Benro tripod-it's about 15 years old now, so it's definitely been updated. Just a 3 stage carbon leg setup, with a ball head from Markins, called the Q10.

Hey Kyle, I’ve recently found your channel and have been watching a lot of them. Catching up. I’m curious with your video background if you’ve shot video on the X-t4 or the gfx100s? If so, I’d love your thoughts compared to the blackmagic stuff. Great stuff and can’t wait to see the next video in the series.
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, William. Alot of the videos on my channel are shot on the X-T4, including this one. The image out of that camera is excellent. I still prefer the Blackmagic cam for overall image quality (it's a little more robust and 'filmic'). But the X-T4 is definitely one of my favourite cameras that I've used for doing stuff like this. The image holds up really well being 10bit, and the colours are great. Not much messing around is needed to get a nice looking image.

Kyle, have you ever thought about trying out a Sigma sd Quattro for this kind of work? I could see the SDF mode and it's amazing Monochrome rendering and weather-sealing really shining for this kind of work. Not saying it's a replacement for what you need the GFX to do, but for $700 it might be worth it for exploring this type of landscape work.

@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim. No focus stacking for me. But I'm not often placing any elements in my frame that are really close, so I find I can get away with just using a smaller aperture and still keep everything in focus. It'd be different if I was doing some exaggerated compositions with things close to the lens.

Hey Kyle, I looked it up and it is, although in Welsh its name is 'Twll Du' or 'Black Hole'. It's called 'The Devil's Kitchen' due to the 'steam' (or blown back water spray) that can be seen rising from it on occasions. Fabulous photographs Kyle and as always the video is inspirational.

For sure. Very different subject matter and light over here in the UK. Plus growing as a photographer and being influenced by new things. I don't think light and airy would work with B&W and these types of scenes. :) It's great for the desert work though.

21:04 Where you have the camera mounted & framed would be my choice for a good image with all the leading lines converging deep into the image - only thing I would change is turn the camera more to the right to lessen the impact of whats on the left edge of the frame. 23:14 would be another image I would have taken.

Hi Kyle - really enjoying your videos out in Snowdonia! I'm in the process of planning a wild camping trip to Scotland and will be taking my Olympus Om-1n with me along with a couple rolls of Colorplus (or perhaps some portra). It'll likely be very wet and I'll pretty much be living out of my bag for a few days - I was wondering if you had any recommendations for keeping the film and camera safe from water and generally operating a camera in those conditions? At the moment plastic bags are about as far as i've got haha. Thank you!

Hey Joscelyn, I'm probably the wrong person to ask for this! :) I say that because I often just have a camera slung under my jacket, or I just let it get wet if I need to shoot. I do have a nice waterproof backpack that I use to store it all, but other than that, the gear is just out in the elements and I cross my fingers that it's going to hold up. Hope you have a good trip to Snowdonia. It's amazing there!
