For anyone who is interested; when Tiffen created Pro Mist filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal lengths because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on an 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist filters is 1/2 for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 for 25-35mm and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this information is useful.

So if I use a 50mm lens I should get a 1/8 Pro mist filter?

A "feature" of digital photography is that everything is sharp and ultra-defined in a paradise for pixel-peepers. Yet there is an appealing and desirable ascetic in the imperfection of film photography and to myself, Pro-Mist filters is a way of putting that back into digital photography.

Really interesting Kyle - thank you. I’d been wondering about how to address what I have come to see as increasingly uncomfortable sharpness in modern lenses and this is a good option. But above all the two films are beautiful. Especially the one about Bruce. I grew up through the back half of the Cold War and the fear was real. With the madness in the world today I completely understand his take on life. His final words really hit home; ‘I’ve come to discover that I dare not change one thing.’ Wow. Wish I had Bruce’s clarity and mindfulness. Watched it twice, straight through. Very powerful work.

Thanks for the extra-candid details of how you shot this footage. I find the 'mystique' element is very often brushed off in 'how to's, with people keeping their cards close to their chest and trying to take credit instead of sharing knowledge of how to elevate your work. That being said, I hope this doesn't lead to a rush of these kind of tools being overused and devalued...

I've ordered the new 7Artisans black mist filter into 1/8 strenght. I am more for the Film look, more analog. Because i love Film photography. Since one of my nowadays very old DSLR renders more film-esque, i hope to enhance that feeling a bit more with an 1/8 black mist filter, without overdoing it.

I bought two Black Pro Mist's recently. Also 1/4 and 1/8, and realized that it will live on my lenses forever. But I bought WARM Black Pro Mists, because I always move my images more to the warm, but now I'm not sure that it was right decision. Maybe I should buy neutral ones also. But overall I'm in love with it! Even 1/8 just beautifully helps to get rid of this modern digital perfection. Also it looks like the effect is stronger on more telephoto lenses. Sometimes when 1/4 looks good on 24mm, it looks too much on 85mm. Did you notice it?
