Can you do a whole video on landings please. Including flare timing/technique, how to save it if you bubble up or flare too early, how to burn off speed if you have a lot on landing and it intimidates you, etc. thank you!

I always love watching a first flight. We know every PPG pilot remembers that event clearly for the rest of their years. I also sincerely admire watching a competent, supportive instructor helping their students overcome their anxiety and limited experience to make their first flights safely. The problem with #2 and #3 is that the students are often teached to "lean back" so that "to feel the thrust" and "to trust your motor". In fact, there is no leaning back on takeoff. Straight posture and use thrust to _accelerate_ - not to hold your weight leaning back. Many pilots run leaning back with their legs forward, in fact resisting the acceleration.

I was flying with some guys down on the coast. We launched from a parking lot. It was pretty tight. There were power lines on two sides of the lot. There was a lagoon on the far side we were flying toward on take off and landing. When we came back to land, we had to fly low over the power lines to have enough space to land. One of the guys did a kind of butterfly flapping with his wing and came very controlled seemingly vertically down into the tight space. I'd love to see a video on how to do that and other advanced landing technics too. Thanks!

Great video. There is always room for improvement with take offs and landings. Each one is different due to the wind.

Great video Kyle O as usual. I'm self taught ppg after 500+ hours of paragliding but something I did quite a lot of before my first power take off (which went great and was a reverse launch) was run with just the motor on my back 'alive' practising running while gradually opening the throttle to 'feel the force' when leaning back. Your guy did great but it looked to me like he was leaning back before 'the force', hence I think one fail when he fell backwards. He did great though and it's just my opinion mate for what it's worth! I guess you do that in training anyway? (40 flights now, but still learning how to forward launch confidently though! 😉. ) edit, I see a couple of folk have suggested that too anyway!

Kyle, that was a great instructional video! Never have I seen in any video a motor out and restart on someone’s training flight. One question for you, did they teach anatomy in pharmacy school because at 1:11 when you say leg leg chest chest chin it looks like you are indicating leg leg groin bellybutton chest. Just messing with you buddy. Great video!

We trained the restart pretty thoroughly on the hang check rig. I think I did around 4 restarts on the rig before this flight, so when it happened it wasn't a big deal - thanks to Kyle for the good training.

Kyle I dont think you gave chris enough credit if that was his first landing. He stayed on his feet, didnt slam the ground, Is say that was an 8 out of 10 for first landing.

I agree Chris did fantastic, made first launch mistakes the same as Neo missed his first jump. As Kyle pointed out, he was on the verge of slamming the ground during that landing and I can only imagine that Kyle had visions in his head of Chris slamming the ground if Chris builds a habit of flaring too early.

It was Kyle's job to point out my mistakes and correct them, so all good. My airplane has a lot more downward inertia and requires the flare start at that height to get the descent arrested just above the runway. I was a little surprised (but shouldn't have been given how much less inertia I had) that the lift came in so quickly, but I corrected pretty well by halting the flare. So call it a negative transfer of learning, but overall I wasn't too upset with my first landing attempt.

is it better to learn to paraglide with no motor first before doing paramotoring?

Not necessarily. If you live very close to a good paraglide location, then yes. If you have to make a journey to get there each time, then motor flying will get you far more benefits from doing it more often.

It looks like he's trying to force the takeoff too early. Needs to run forward a bit more and get the wing overhead before leaning back.

That's exactly what happened. This was my first time attempting a launch with both a wing and the motor on my back. We did some work with just a motor, and I did many forward launches without the motor, but this was the first time combining them and my timing was not good. The good thing is that Kyle gave me a copy of the video after this and I got to watch it a number of times that day so I could see my problem and drill the solution (via visualization) before that evening's flying session. I was able to launch successfully with good timing on the first try that evening.

Exactly! Get your forward speed first, then smoothly lean back. A combination of the two will make takeoffs easy. By the way, that was a good first landing.

@@chrishibner516 You've got courage to let them post your first takeoff, lol! So many peoples' egos couldn't take the strain of it. On my first flight, my instructor said that once I was on power, to lean back and "goose step" like the WWII news reels, and let the motor give me the forward motion. I was running out of beach, heading toward the water, so high pucker factor, but went nicely airborne.

I think he shouldn't be given the instruction to lean back right away as it will definitely make him lose his balance.

You're missing some information regarding your thoughts. Leaning back is crucial for proper launch technique..
