Great video as always! The 078s is a very compelling grinder. I just purchased an Ode Gen 2, and hand grind for espresso. If I was looking for a grinder right now, I would probably back the 078S.

Kept holding off on getting a Niche Zero and eventually ended up going with the 1zpresso K-max and love the coffee it brews. When the buzz started about a new grinder from Timemore, I started to reconsider getting an electric grinder. Also, I really enjoyed September Coffee when I first received it, but I was amazed how much better it was a couple weeks after receiving it. I backed the 78S and it sounds like that was a wise choice. It will be used next to my Niche for espresso, although at some point one will likely have to go. Can't wait to experience the flat burr difference for both espresso and filter. Great review, Kyle!

@@HaaniJaber I usually drink light~light/med-roasted coffee for both filter and espresso so I prefer the enhanced clarity that I get from SSP MP flat burrs. But even for dark roasts especially when I do filters, SSP MP burr creates much less bitterness due to more uniform grind profiles so I prefer that as well.

Great review, I backed for a 78s when they launched it since I can replace my Gen 1 Ode and Eurka Mignon Facile with it and sell them. I drink my espresso and filter coffee straight most of the time and it will basically be my end game grinder so seems it's a good pick.

Locked in the 078S. I returned a Breville AIO unit after a few months in I began having issues with the built-in grinder. Since then, I have been doing pour overs and I really miss my espresso drinks and the workflow. I kept holding off on getting a new espresso setup because of gripes with other grinders, but it looks like this this ticks all the boxes, so this is pretty exciting stuff!

How would you compare the 64s to the Fellow Opus? Being two budget range grinders that are supposed to be good at espresso.

64s is far easier to dial in for espresso with a better quality in the cup. But the 64s is a much more expensive grinder, especially after the Kickstarter price

I've been trying to decide if I want to get the 64 here, the ode v2, or just grab a refurbished ode v1 and put in their v2 burrs. I'm leaning towards the last option since I'm just planning on using a hand grinder for espresso and these will mostly be for coarse Aeropress recipes and french press with an occasional V60. Great review! Thank you! I have a ghost burr grinder at home, and it makes some crazy juicy and sweet filter brews. If you want to try something wild…. Try a sprover with the turbo burrs, with a bottom filter. At least in my grinder these are incredible.

Just changed my order from the 064s to the 078s because of this. I’ve had the df64 for a while and whilst I’m generally happy with the espresso I’ve never been satisfied with the filter, and hearing you say the 064s is similar to the df64 burrs filter and the 078s burrs being great for filter as well really made me want to change!

I also have a DF64 and suffer from upgrade-itis. With Turin coming out with a new grinder every year and now these (& others too) it's got my head spinning. I'd like to know if either the 64s, 78s or DF64V (or E or P) are worth selling my DF64 for. Apparently, the new DF64V comes with better burrs than the Italmill of the other Turin grinders. (I almost exclusively make espresso, and the rare french press.) Kyle, thanks for this video! So many of us have been waiting for a genuine review for the espresso versions of the grinders.

I’m glad you were one of the first to get review out on these! I was looking at the varia vs3 for some time because of the aesthetics and price range along with the reviews but once this was announced I waited and backed it on kickstarter. Do you have a recommendation on whether I should stick it out and get the 64s or the varia? You mentioned talking about kickstarter in the beginning and never really went into detail later.

For espresso I’d recommend the 64s over the varia. The varia is great as a filter grinder but I’m slow to recommend it for espresso because if it’s gearbox.

Thanks a lot for the review ! It's very appreciated. I'm still on the fence between 68s and 78s. I backed the 68s (to replace an old Eureka Mignon, the first version they sold, before expanding their range) because it's 200$ cheaper which is quite huge, but I'm still not sure. I'm drinking non milk espresso which are probably in the medium/medium-light range , I've never been able to fully understand that definition... (they are mainly espresso beans from Square mile). So I guess the 68s would probably still be the best choice and I think I can hope for an improvement over my "old" grinder (it's only 6 years old, but a lot have changed in the grinder industry theses last years)..

I couldn’t buy the 064s with it running so close to the edge that slowing the RPM down a bit overloads it / causes shutdown. Needs more overhead (more powerful motor), can’t imagine it will last if it’s being pushed to it’s limit every time you grind. I’m pretty tempted to buy the 078. Nice review.

I had the 64S backed and have been vacillating over switching to the 78S since. I hesitated because of the (currently) proprietary burr size, but given the overwhelmingly positive reception this grinder has received before even hitting the market, I don't think burr options will be limited for long. You sold me... This is YOUR fault! 🤣 I'll be happy to have a solid all-around grinder on the counter. I don't need the best of the best... Much better than the average bear at $500 is tremendous and it will be hard to fixate on nit-picks or small imperfections at that value. Can't wait for it to ship... Just in time for summer 😂

I suspect you're right on the burr options point. If this thing delivers like I hope that it will (and appears to be), we should see some decent traction. There will be some money to be made by SSP or other off the back of this as a platform

Seems like the 078s burrs live up to the expectations. And being so close in dimensions to the 80 mm burrs from Ditting/Mahlkoenig/Weber, I assume its not that difficult for SSP to adjust their designs to 78 mm

Great review. Looks like the 078 has bridged the gap between the d64 and lagom p64, with some nice workflow flourishes. I’ve switched my backing from the 064 to the 078s based on seeing these burrs in action, and also hearing the differences in motors. As good as 064 looks, that motor doesn’t sound great in comparison. I wonder if the 064 is brushless like the 078. Doesn’t sound like it. Excited to get brewing!!

Would you recommend upgrading from a Lagom mini to either the 78s or the 64s? Or should I be saving for a pricier grinder to notice a bigger taste difference after the upgrade?

Awesome review. Got the ODE Gen 2 (SSP) and the DF 83 (SSP) around December and you're making it really hard for me to NOT bring them home some siblings. LOL

@@BensCoffeeRants I did! They’re great and give a awesome body for shots- But I was shooting for higher clarity since I love lighter roasts. The SSP provided that-I somewhat compensated for loss of body with modifying my brew water.

I backed the 064(no S) just for filter and would be interested to see your thoughts vs the lagom mini , or whether I should swap the burrs out.
