Twin Turbo End Vise Kickstarter Campaign: kck.st/2Eti3sN
This work bench is made in hard maple and mahogany. The legs are made in hard maple and wrapped with 1/8in mahogany to make it look like they are solid mahogany. I did this to save money on wood and get a stronger bench leg. I'm using the 20 inch twin turbo vis made by Andy Klein. Go check out his kickstarter! The work bench is 4 inch thick 26 inches wide and 66 inches long, it stands 35 inches tall. Thanks for watching!

My favorite finish for shop stuff is BLO. Quick, simple and if I have some left from something else I just swab some more on the bench, etc.

I like boiled linseed oil for a bench, its just enough protection to prevent glue from sticking without making the surface too slippery. It's also good for when you have to resurface the top.

Suggest Tung oil. It has some properties for repelling dirt / grime and is easy clean. Is easy to apply and re apply when the inevitable wear starts to show, and looks nice !

Nice. I build my Roubo out of hard maple as well, I used danish oil and it looks and works fantastic. Glue doesn't really stick to it and it has more grip when clamping than before it was finished.

Cool bench! I like to put on an oil like young oil or BLO. Then when you get glue drips or other things you can use your card scraper and clean up the bench top. Then wit oil you can put some on the areas that you scrape clean. No fussing with a film finish. Just my take.

very cool, I'm getting ready to build one myself, I dig the way you did the legs. well done. as far as finish I'd go with a linseed oil.
@steveswoodworking2504
@steveswoodworking2504 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, boiled linseed oil for the top. You don't want it to be too slick. Just at least some minor protection. I also bought a silicone mat for the top of the bench, I use it when doing glue ups, and the glue comes off, without getting it on the top of the bench.

You're a pretty good wood-machinist. Would have been nice to see some nice mortise and tenons on the legs connections. Those lags will work for a while but eventually you'll be wanting something better. Just wax the top, it will get scratched, cut, dented and maybe a few dimples from over drilled holes that got away. It'll be a lot easier to re-plane when that needs to be done and a whole lot easier with a super sharp plane.

Looks SOLID ASF! I wood definitely put some type of top coat on it. Like satin finish polycrylic or a shellac that way of glue gets on it its easier to get off and iff something spills on it theres some type of protection. I use satin poly. On mine once a year But to each their own.im actually building a stock pile up to build a new one also after 6 yrs it's time to upgrade from the 2x4s too.lol

As for finish, it depends on what you plan to use the bench for. If its strictly for workholding, then no finish would be best as work won't slide around as easily. If you're going to do glue-ups and finishing on it then a coat of oil/varnish blend (Watco Danish Oil for example) will help keep glue from sticking and finishes from staining the bench and possibly transferring to other work later. I definitely wouldn't use wax on it unless its going to be an outfeed table for your saw.

Wonderful build. The vice is lovely... needs a finish... :)s What about a glass top layer? I love glass - I can cut and the blades never cut through or mark the glass (glass is harder than steel) and so on. As long as you don't bang on it... :) If you are worried about breaking the glass - some stainless sheet will hit he spot.

Why didnt you size the base deeper so at least one side of the legs is flush with the top? Doing that affords much more clamping versatility IMO as you can support wide panels (or doors in my case) on dogs in the legs- and clamp them to the edge of the top.

Kyle! Nice workbench man. Really like the look of it. You'll get some good use out of that. But i have to ask. What's with the no dustmask when your sawing or sanding? I see that a lot in your video's. That's not healthy man. You should really look after yourself. I think i speak for a lot of YT followers that we want you to continue with making this vids for as long as possible and not get some kind of lung disease. Anyway. Keep up the fantastic work.
