This was during Kylies "indie phase" for the impossible princess album. The press were saying we'd had cute kylie (early PWL), sex kylie (late PWL), dance kylie (KM94) and now indie kylie (impossible princess). This was a piss take of that, the idea she was a one woman spice girls. The 4 Kylies fighting it out, none of them won, because they were all her. Amazing video and the effects still hold up 25 years later

There's a good quote from Kylie herself explaining the concept and the idea behind the video: "Basically we were having a laugh at a lot of the different articles that were appearing at that time in different magazines and papers, and they were talking about 'Pop Kylie, Dance Kylie, Sex Kylie' and, you know, with every different release of a single they'd say 'What Kylie is it now?' and it was just becoming a joke. So he, Pedro, cunningly picked up on that and said we should make a video with all the different Kylies, which I was more then [sic] happy about, because it was stating the obvious and having a laugh at the same time."

The press always coined the 'dance Kylie' ..etc themes, as she has always been a chameleon and the princess of reinvention as I'm sure you are discovering. Indie-Kylie was used after her work on impossible princess and writing songs with the manic street preachers and recent work (back then) with Nick Cave. Some Kind of bliss and I don't need anyone were the tracks written with the Manics, so you could check those out 🙂

I think indie Kylie was the era with Kylie Minogue and Impossible Princess albums which this song belong to IP. Most indie Kylie in my opinion was Where the Wild Roses Grow song and video. Also during Showgirl tour but she has a beautiful stage performance for my favorite song from IP album, Dreams. This album was seen as low point in Kylie's carreer back in the day but I always liked these stand out albums from her... just like Abbey Road Sessions or Kylie Minogue album from the same era.

I love this video too, and its original release was 1997. When Kylie first appeared she was seen as ‘cute’ girl next door kind of character. Kylie’s producers wanted her to stay like that because she was selling a lot of records, but by 1990 she was vetoing mixes of her songs and working with other producers too, then came ‘dance’ Kylie, and along the same time ‘sex’ Kylie. Kylie was accused of plagiarising Madonna (Let’s Get To It tour.) and after Nick Cave and Where The Wild Roses Grow, it was then ‘Indie’ Kylie. Impossible Princess is a good example of this genre of music, especially songs like Some Kind Of Bliss, I Don’t Need Anyone, Limbo and this track Did It Again. She was creating some great pieces of music at this time notably Take Me With You, Love Takes Over Me, Tears, The Real Thing and Bury Me Deep In Love. She really matured as an artist. Impossible Princess was based on a book called ‘How To Break The Harts (sic) Of Impossible Princesses’ which Kylie used as inspiration. Her next album Light Years, used the concept of Sunshine, Poolside & Cocktails which had a much more bright and summery sound. Just in time for the 30th anniversary of its release. So the concept is there are 4 Kylies sex, indie, cute and Dance. They are all fighting to be dominate. They were created by the era's and incarnations Kylie had created in her career. In the beginning of her career Kylies image was the girl next door innocent aka Cute Kylie, cute and sweet. Then as she got older she wanted to be taken a bit more seriously so enter Sex Kylie. At that time in the early 90s, she started dating rock singer Michael Hutchence from the band INXS. Dating him gave her a sexier image, after that she wanted to change her sound from cute sweet pop to what she was listening clubbing. Her enters Dance Kylie. That Era the music went from sweet cute pop to club, new jack swing pop. After she left her first label she went to a smaller independent dance label named Deconstruction with that enters Indie Kylie. All these Kylie are fighting to be seen. That is the videos concept.
