Their nicknames came from a British journalist who was writing an article about them. He didn’t know their names so just came up with the spice names which they took and rolled with it. They got together after they all saw an advert in a newspaper looking for a girlband.

I worked with a girl who was a good friend of Emma (Baby Spice) who invited her to go to the audition, as she was also a singer and dancer. The way my colleague explained it, Emma had been a keen auditioner without success, so she assumed this would be a similar story and didn't go along to try out. To say she spent a few years kicking herself, is an understatement - sometimes it really does only take that one good audition to get your career going, I guess. Bizarrely, a year or so later, I served Emma when I worked in a London lingerie store! Cos, you know, life and coincidences and all that jazz 🙂

The American sound isn’t actually an American sound - it’s about how you form your vowels, and it’s much easier to sing using those vowel sounds than it is to sing with the vowel sounds made in most British accents.

Their nicknames originated from the British music show Top Of The Pops. The show was accompanied by a TOTP music magazine, and the editor at the time coined the names based on what he thought they suited. Posh was always the one who was well spoken and always wore glam looking clothes. Sporty Spice because she always wore sports wear. Baby because she was the youngest of the bunch. Ginger because.... well.... And Scary because she was outspoken and loud!

My aunt introduced me to them (she was a young aunt in college) she literally said do u know the spice girls? I said no. So she drew them as little caricatures and that was my introduction to them before hearing Wannabe. She then played their album. I didn’t get to see their videos for at least a few months. So in a way it was like they came to life from a drawing for me lol.

I was wondering about the nicknames also a while ago, but Melanie C said in an interview with Mayim Bialik that in the UK the ginger people are heabily bullied, so someone like Geri, who was very in-your-face, was like "power to the gingers" and that meant something huge for them over there. So, while not a personality, the nickname had some deeper meaning anyway.

It’s not an American accent, it’s singing with open vowels. If you have signing lessons it’s what you’re taught to do. Vowels in an English speaking accent are closed and it’s harder to sing with any power like that. It just happens to sound closer to an American speaking voice (which has open vowels) than an English one. You can definitely hear their own accents here too though.

It's probs way too late and you'll never see this, but in regards to the nicknames, there was a pop magazine in the UK that used to give nicknames to the artists they interviewed, and the journalist who interviewed them in late 1996/early 1997 gave them the nicknames based on the experience. Mel B was very loud and sat on his lap during the interview and joked "You're scared of me, aren't you?", hence she got the name 'Scary Spice'. Ginger was originally going to be 'Saucy' Spice because she was very flirty in the interview, but he changed it last minute. So like most things with the Spice Girls, it was all accidental and kind of serendipitous.

YES!!!!!FINALLY!!!!!!!🎊 🎉‼️🎊🥰🥰 I don’t know if it’s my list or not but I did have “Say you’ll be there” as #5. I’ll know tomorrow if this is my list depending on the song. The origins of their nicknames came from a small British magazine that named them in a cheeky sort of way shortly after their 1st 2 singles premiered. The Spice Girls took what was meant to be a lazy dig and RAN with it. Basically took the power back like true “Girl Power!” So scary MAY have been a bit of a 90s dig at the only black woman in the group but Mel B took that and made it her own. “Scary” is because of how wild and loud and openly honest she was. That can scare some men and intimate them how brazen her personality was. Then add her big in your face hair along with it which was amazing for us black folks back then because she wasn’t afraid to wear her natural fro instead of wigs and lace fronts. “Ginger” is the easiest to understand because of red but she was also known as “SEXY” spice. Because of her big boobs, hot pants, and I guess red is the sexiest color, she played the most vixen type role visually. “Baby” was every little boy and girls favorite and is genius because it’s the easiest to promote to their main fanbase of 4-12 year olds. She’s a Barbie doll. She’s blonde blue eyed and innocent with mini dresses and platforms. She was also the youngest member and acted like it personality wise. You have to understand the Spice Girls is pure CAMP in the most extremely purposeful way. They knew what they were doing and they did it well.

The Nicknames do go deeper: 1. Posh- Victoria was driven to school (often begrudgingly) everyday by her Dad in an expensive Rolls-Royce. And now she has a net worth of 450 million. She has always been the rich one, lol. 💍 Sporty- Mel C grew up playing European football, hockey, tennis, netball and was a trained gymnast. She bought a top of the line pair of sports sneakers with her first Spice Girls paycheck. ⚽️ Baby- Emma was the youngest of the group. At the time of the OG Spice Girls auditions, she had turned 18 about 2 months earlier…. Melanie Brown called her “just a baby!” Open meeting her for the first time. Emma ate baby food while living in their Maidenhead flat too. lol ☺️ Scary- Melanie Brown had her tongue pierced at the start of the Spice Girls which for the time having that kind of piercing was a bit of a shock to the general public lol. Jennifer Cawthron a woman from Leeds like Mel B helped come up her nickname because of how she nearly, single hand , took over the photo shoot for The Spice Girls. And she taught herself the drums ! A powerful musical instrument !!🥁 Ginger- rumor has it that they were gonna to give Geri “Sexy” Spice, and given her sultry career as a glamor model it would have fit. But it was 1996 and you couldn’t say Sexy lol…. Ginger worked because red headed gals are outgoing and adventurous! Which was Geri going into The Spice Girls. She’s a Leo and a fiery personality. Also Ginger Rogers was a famous Old Hollywood Star. Geri grew up with Classical Hollywood Stars and adored Ginger Rodger’s and Rita Hayworth who were great redheads 💋🇬🇧✌️

Some crazy trivia for you about their names Sporty, Scary, Posh, Ginger and Baby: they didn't actually name themselves. A British tabloid at the time just called them that and it stuck... Spiceeeee Girllssss! Originally there was a rap part in this song as well... but it was ditched before it was recorded. They did the rap during the 'Mama' videoshoot (behind the scenes). Instead they went for the harmonica part. Judd Lander who did the harmonica also did the harmonica on Karma Chameleon (Culture Club). It is Scary Spice because Mel B is very intense and loud. She loves the name. Baby is the youngest, a real mama's girl, so yeah... Sporty is still a very healthy and sporty woman. She DJ's and has the most solo albums. Ginger is a fake, her hair I mean 😂... she is more alburn than red. Posh is just very posh, but actually has a pretty naughty dry sense of humor.

Their Spice names were given by a lazy reporter who couldn't be bothered to remember their names for a teen pop magazine. He just came up with their names based on their appearance, but then later the names came to be their personas. The Spice Girls came to be by answering an ad for a girl group, they were stifled by their management, took some industry contacts, ran away and started pitching themselves as Spice to execs until Simon Fuller signed them on. In the industry they were known as "those spice girls" and the name "spice girls" stuck.
