And oddly her least popular! go figure? I'd say DISCO has surpassed it as her most cohesive and consistent album, though Aphrodite was also great...

1. Deconstruction went out of business before the 90's were over. 2. Kylie co-wrote every song and has solo writing credit for Too Far and Say Hey. 3. Singles are: Some Kind Of Bliss, Did It Again, Breathe (Remix) and Cowboy Style (in Australia). 4. The album was more popular in Australia than the UK and was celebrated with the Intimate And Live concert tour in 1998 (which I won concert tickets to see). 5. Limbo was considered for single release. 6. "Sitar" is the stringed instrument you thought you heard during Did It Again. 7. Good get with Breathe being the sequel to Did It Again! 8. Was retitled _"Kylie Minogue"_ in the UK following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. 9. Think of the lyrics as being more metaphoric and less literal. Like a stream of consciousness. 10. Thought you hated this album judging from the thumbnail. Clearly you were challenged instead. Excellent. 11. The original album contains 12 tracks with Tears and Love Takes Over Me (which I ❤. _It sounded awesome live_ ) serving as B-sides. 12. This Girl was released later on a compilation album of the Deconstruction era to capitalise on the success of Light Years. 13. Prior to the release of this album Kylie had collaboratored with _Nick Cave and the Seeds on the single Where The Wild Roses Grow_ (from their album Murder Ballads) and _Towa Tei with whom she recorded the single GBI (German Bold Italic)._ 14. Nick Cave also gifted Kylie a book of poetry entitled *"Poems To Break The Hearts Of Impossible Princesses"* by Billy Childish. 15. Too Far was issued as a promotional single. End. ...

I remember going to 6 of her 7 Melbourne 'Intimate and Live' shows where she showcased most of this album. One demo from the era which she still hasn't recorded fully to my knowledge was Free which is pretty eye opening. This album is not her 'best' album but it is by far and away my favourite of hers. Nice to see your review, and it is definitely worth multiple listens.

Can’t wait to see your reaction to this album. This is my favourite Kylie album EVER. Lyrically is so deep and strong, the music it’s so dark but makes you feel a lot in so many levels. “Impossible Princess” came into my life when I was struggling whit a lot of stress, insecurity, anxiety and an eating disorder, this album (and a lot of therapy) helped me to get through all of that. “Jump” and “Dreams” are my favourite songs.

Definitely one of Kylie's career defining moments I loved it from it's release & I still love it today! Really interested to see your reaction! Not appreciated in the main at the time & now it's a Kylie classic! Interesting note - Kylie decided to change the name of the album in Europe to Kylie Minogue (the same name as her immediately previous album) & delayed it's release there, out of respect for Princess Diana who had died only months before Since 2003, it's been sold in Europe as Impossible Princess

I think she needed to take this direction for her own state of mind. Sure the album Kylie Minogue was a statement she could glide without PWL's safety net and I can only imagine her desire to cut any strings and simply do what she craved. Ironically she was always picked on and descredited for not writing any of her stuff or very little but her lyrical input in this whole album deserves more praise than most of her iconic pieces. Some kind of bliss, limbo and Dreams are masterpieces. I saw her live at her Intimate & Live concert in London and she was Flawless. And to me, although not relevant, this era was when she looked her best.

Yes now this is the reaction I’ve been waiting for such a great album a career highlight, personal and reflective and very different. Poor single choices blighted the album and whilst the general public didn’t really get this non pop kylie it is a fan favourite and a hugely significant part of her history without Impossible Princess we wouldn’t have the Kylie we have today, great to see and hear your take on this record! Looking forward to Light Years next which is my favourite Kylie album!

Notice that both DeCon album covers were similar but completely opposite of each other. Kylie Minogue 94 had a plain white background and she was covered in a suit and the photography was black & white. And then you have Impossible Princess which was later also titled Kylie Minogue, and the backdrop was black but it was filled with colours and she was showing more skin. Both covers perfectly represented the theme and characteristics of both albums respectively.

I still watch the ‘did it again’ video when I’m having a rough day and need a smile. I got into Kylie in 2001 when I found Light Years and started listening to her entire back catalogue. I was impressed with the diversity up until that point in time once past the SAW years. Then several months later ‘can’t get you outta my head’ dropped and the rest is herstory. I’ve seen her live 3 times here in the US and they were truly some of the most magical nights of my life. Absolutely spectacular live show.

The song 'Dreams' (of an Impossible Princess) explores the feelings of duality Kylie experiences, which (at the time) she put down to being a Gemini. Lyrically, the themes of being frustrated by her conflicting desires, making sense of her duality and often, wildly opposing feelings pervades the entire album. eg: 'Too Far' ("Trapped my very own self in the snare of my mind") - Cowboy Style ("Peace and terror all in one, My future life has just begun") - Breathe ("Don't blame me just because I am bored, I'm needy, I need to taste it all") - Say Hey, verse 1 ("Don't want to disturb you") / verse 2 ("So good to disturb you") - Drunk ("I'm suffocating with desire - I need to save me from myself") - I Don't Need Anyone ("I don't need anyone, Except for someone I've not found") - 1/2
@InSimonated
@InSimonated 3 жыл бұрын
2/2 - Limbo ("This notion of needing has held me ransom , And all I can do is avoid my mind") - The *entirety* of both 'Did It Again' and 'Jump'. She refers to herself as an 'Impossible Princess' as she believes this side of her can never be satisfied - but still, she must have it all. She must do it all. The album was criticised at the time for lacking cohesion - but thematically, the music emphasises the Impossible Princess lyrics to perfection, delving into everything from Drum & Base influences, to chill-out electronica, country, Middle Eastern, Pacific Island percussion, Dramatic Orchestral rock to hard-core underground club music that would rival anything The Prodigy were doing at the time. IMHO, 'Impossible Princess' could not have been more cohesive, had it tried. The "chaos holds you captive".

I believe the middle eastern instrument used in some songs is a Sitar. Whilst this isn't my favourite album...it's an extremely important & defining one in her career & as an artist. There is such a depth of emotion...and yes, intelligence. She isn't just a puppet or air-head popstar. She is human. She feels. She has thoughts. She can analyse, self-reflect & philosophise. She has said she would never make an album like this again...but I wish she would. It's exciting to see where she can go creatively & her songwriting capabilities.

So apparently the album was conceived as a techno trip hop album. After it was recorded she then wrote Some Kind of Bliss with Manic Street Preachers. This was a big song so got added and released as first single. But its not representative of the album.

Hi Sal, I been throughly enjoying all your Kylie Minogue album explorations and discovery’s - thought I finally better comment! I’m from Down Under & the album came out here in early 98- a few weeks before Madonna’s Ray Of Light (it was released later in UK- not sure why you say released in 1997). Kylie’s IP to me seems an album of two halves- indie rock songs (Did It Again- great song- amazing promo; SKOB; IDNA, Limbo etc) & experimental trip hop dance songs (especially at the time current drum and bass). IP spawned a companion remix album “Impossible Remixes” or in UK simply Mixes. I’m glad you have grown to like Some Kind Of Bliss. Did It Again, Breathe (sped up for single release), Cowboy Style, IDNA & Limbo are my personal IP album faves. I look forward to more of your honest album reviews. PS: Adore the posters in the background!

Mostly agree with the assessment. 2 exceptions. One, Drunk. You have to take drunk as drunk on love (pre Beyonce) and then the lyrics make much more sense. It’s not drunk on alcohol. Two, Love Takes Over Me. It’s kind of a juxtaposition of the entire album. And as a teenager discovering Kylie for the first time soon after this album was released it spoke to me, so I am biased. On track from this session that didn’t make the Deluxe addition but is featured on this eras Hits collection (Hits +) is Take Me With You. You’ll crave an edit as it’s like 9 minutes long but it’s an opus.

Glad you loved the track “Dreams”, that and “Breathe” are my favourite tracks from the album (I prefer the Single Mix of Breathe however as it’s slightly sped up). You MUST check out another track from the album sessions called “Take Me With You” which is featured on a compilation called Hits+ This track was originally on the album but removed along with another to make way for “Some Kind Of Bliss” and “I Don’t Need Anyone” which were made to fit in with the current UK Brit Pop sound... wrong move I think. Be great if you did an individual reaction vid to “Take Me With You” x

In my opinion Impossible Princess is Kylie's best album. It has had the most growth for me, has loads of replay value and I like it more today. You should consider doing a "lookback reaction" on these albums on songs you've changed your opinion on. Limbo is my favourite. And you should listen to Take Me With You, an Impossible Princess b-side. Also, Kylie wasn't dropped by Deconstruction. It was an amicable separation and Deconstruction folded not long after.

You've kinda got the meaning of Some Kind of Bliss wrong: It's not about there being a little bit of bliss in each day. Instead, like Breathe it's about depression, and the lyrics are that all she has in each day is the day itself - she should be happy but she's not because life is empty. Because every day is all there is in this some kind of bliss. One of her best ever singles and recorded with the Manic Street Preachers. Also, dude, she wasn't dropped by Deconstruction. They went bust shortly after.

I wonder how much different Kylie's career would be if she followed this album's direction for Light Years or any other project in the future, the britpop/indie/experimental style of this one is pretty unique compared to the rest of her discography and left me wanting more of this version of Kylie, such untapped potential. My favorite songs in this ones are certainly Some Kind of Bliss, Drunk, Breathe and Dreams, I wish she sang those more often because they're awesome! The songs written by her also deserve more recognition, while she's not the best song writer it is nice to see the true artist side of a pop star.

I always thought 'Say Hey' was about loneliness, and a longing for human contact. Not necessarily sexual, but it could be I guess. But I see it more just about needing company, and I see that as being a phone call, i.e. she's contemplating calling a close friend or family member, even though she knows it's not an appropriate time, especially if she doesn't have anything important to say to them. Nowadays we'd call it Mental Health, but twenty four years ago nobody talked about that stuff. And somehow the music in this track makes it sound like this is in the early hours of the morning. I used to have a friend that did this to me relatively regularly; I'd be asleep in my home, and he'd ring to tell me he couldn't get off to sleep, and he'd want me to come over. For goodness knows what reason, he then seemed to be able to get off to sleep fine knowing that I was on his sofa, finding it difficult to get back off to sleep myself. Funny how that friendship didn't end up lasting long-term. Anyway. Here in the UK, the album didn't get the title Impossible Princess (it was just called Kylie Minogue, which caused confusion, as her previous album was also called Kylie Minogue), because it came out just a few months after Princess Diana was killed (lady D herself could be said to have been an impossible princess, because she didn't play the palace game, which might have had something to do with what ultimately happened to her, v sad.).This album still did not do well here at all at the time of it's release. But at least Kylie did the right thing, and delayed the release of the album, to repackage the title etc. Classy. Unlike Madonna's Ray Of Light, and the song Drowned World, which was a single here in Europe, with a video that was suspiciously similar to what happened to Diana. In a blacked out car, being chased by paparazzi. Though Madonna would probably argue that that is also her own experience when she goes out. But as a video at that time, it was still in really bad taste. The 'druggy' bit where the faces of everyone around her go all weird and slightly demonic is a really cool and unexpected effect though.

This album produced some of my all-time favourite Kylie’ songs: Jump, Through the years and Limbo. I love the whole album though, musically, vocally and lyrically. Definitely a gem in her career. Fun fact: Madonna’s Ray of light resembles this album, the similarities are quite hard to overlook.

Sal, the title came from a book gifted to Kylie by Nick Cave called "Poems to Break the Hearts of Impossible Princesses" by Billy Childish. You can reap more about the album here: www.albumism.com/features/tribute-celebrating-20-years-of-kylie-minogue-impossible-princess

Maybe you should consider also including B-sides to your reviews even if they are not on any version of the particular album. With the "Kylie Minogue" album for instance you missed out on "If You Don't Love Me" (B-side to "Confide In Me"), a really beautiful stripped down little ballad, amazingly sung by Kylie. It wouldn't have fit on the album, which is why it was only a B-side but it is definitely worth checking out. Maybe you could do an extra video for B-sides once you're done with the albums.

@Sal The best version of cowboy Style is the Fever tour. Watch the video Sal. I believe Madonna's music album was inspired by this Cowboy Style song so much that Madonna performed at the VMA wearing a T-shirt named Kylie Minogue during the performance.

Thanks for a really interesting reaction. I still really don’t like Some Kind of Bliss. They should have ditched the Manics penned tracks. But I love Jump and Dreams in particular. You should watch Dreams live from the Showgirl tour, gives me chills! It’s definitely an album of Kylie trying to figure out who she is. I don’t think they included Cowboy Style in the Golden tour as it was maybe an obvious choice. Also think it’s such a different sound to Golden and she sings in a different style on IP and maybe she wouldn’t have been able to recreate that and it wouldn’t have fit the narrative they created for the tour. Will look forward to your Light Years reaction. Probably my favourite Kylie album.

Too far should have been a single release as it gives more of an idea of what to expect. The album is a favourite of mine I play this often. I always hear this album isn't a fan favourite but I disagree with this because most of the time fans seem to give it the recognition that it deserves 🙂
