Fun fact: that's songwriter Matt Aitken playing the guitar solo on Things Can Only Get Better. He's said in a few interviews it's his favourite Kylie track and he pushed for it to be a single but Pete Waterman overrode it in favour of Shocked for the 4th single. Also I was waiting to see your reaction when the rap dropped in One Boy Girl. The uncredited rapper featured with Kylie on it is Felicia Morris aka The Poetess. Count The Days is about INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence whom she was dating at the time she made this album. She was in the UK at the time and he in Hong Kong, so she's singing about her long distance relationship. You are right about the C+C Music Factory influence. Kylie and SAW were definitely inspired by their style as they were very popular around the same time as this album. Another fun fact, Kylie's sister Dannii has a cameo in the music video for What Do I Have To Do.

There are 4 tracks from the album that are co-written by Kylie and were produced in America by producers Michael Jay (Martika), Keith Cohen (Paula Abdul) and Stephen Bray (Madonna). Kylie's new American label (MCA) instructed the producers to create tracks that didn't copy the Stock Aitken Waterman style. Unfortunately these tracks were never opted for single release. The album release was eventually shelved after Better The Devil You Know was added to the soundtrack of a Richard Grieco movie that stunk up the box office. That and Kylie not being available for promotion ended the album's promotional campaign before it had begun. The heavy work load of the past few years saw Kylie prioritising her health (and sanity) which resulted in less promotional activity (other than touring Australia and the UK) and less success in territories where she had been quite popular. Changing musical tastes were also a factor. Kylie had undertaken her second concert tour in support of this album which merged into a tour for her follow up album, Let's Get To It in the UK. American produced tracks are: The World Still Turns, One Boy Girl, Count The Days and Rhythm Of Love. These tracks would be the first Kylie songs recorded without Stock Aitken Waterman since her initial Australian recordings in 1987. Kylie co-wrote I Am The One For You with PWL producers and mixers Phil Harding and Ian Curnow. The track went unheard until 1998 when included on a remix album.

This album shows a transformation from “sweet Kylie” to “sexy Kylie”. More mature sound and lyrics. The relationship with Michael Hutchence was a huge influence for the selection of the songs.

💖 Kylie's Rhythm Of Love album👍 This is where she took more control of her career 💋KYLIE💖 was also being influenced by (& in a relationship with) INXS singer Michael Hutchence @ the time & it showed through her music & image. Vocally ✨KM✨ had also stepped up & grown. My favourite tracks are: BTDYK, Step Back In Time, What Do I have To Do, Always Find The Time, The World Still Turns, Shocked (both the album version & the DNA remix), Count The Days (a song 4 Michael Hutchence) & Rhythm Of Love.

"Better the devil you know" "Step back in time" "What do I have to do" "Shocked" "Things can only get better" "One boy girl" All bops. The remix of "One boy girl" on iTunes has better production values. "What do I have to do" and "Devil" were both remixed in 1998 with pretty good results under the names "the movers and shakers" mixes for a compilation they canceled.

I'm going through her discography now. What baffles me is that this wasn't released in the US? Some of these songs would have been big hits. Better Than The Devil You Know, Shocked, and Step Back In Time are good. Really surprised me. Her pop sounds very. It reminded me of the spice girls' first album, Yolanda Adams, and Kirk Franklin's early stuff.. Thanks for the discussion Sal. It was really fun. *Just finished for a full listen. it's such a shame that these songs were promoted or released in the US. I think this album, and the Word Is the Out is closetest she's done toward a gospel or RnB material. It's good take on it for her! This would have been a well received album on the RnB charts, and It reminds of Teena Marie's stuff on video soul. I do think it's odd that these two albums try to cater to an older crowd (my old church's deacon board haha). Thanks man!

Kylie apparently hates What do I have to do, but its a fan favourite so she always performs it. Remember at the time, all the fans in the UK were 12 year olds. All they wanted were catchy dance pop bops. That's why this was more successful than album 2

Thanks for another reaction. The World Still Turns is a bit of a fan favourite. Personally this is my favourite PWL album. It has a special place in my heart and the music videos are all fantastic. Stock, Aitken and Waterman wrote Better the Devil You Know about her leaving Neighbours, ending her relationship with Jason Donovan and starting a relationship with Michael Hutchence as they thought that could cause them trouble as after all Jason had a clean cut image and Michael was seen as unpredictable and they didn’t want to explode the fairytale of Kylie and Jason. So the story is that Pete Waterman was telling Mike Stock about it and he said she should reconsider as it’s better the devil you know. In the video Kylie is wearing Michael’s ring which is a large ‘M’ and she purposely flashes it as much as possible, bit of an FU to them I think! It was also the first album that SAW didn’t write and produce every song so Kylie was starting to assert her independence and I think they realised they were starting to lose their control over her. Michael’s mother was the makeup artist on the video. The styling and visuals are also amazing for this campaign.

I've mixed emotions towards this album. All 4 singles were so outstanding (personally, I prefer the album version of Shocked over the DNA version) that the rest of the album falls short to me although I do like The world still turns. Better the devil is timeless, iI bet if released today it'd have same or even bigger impact. The US remix for it is a total waste, always skip it.. It totally ruins the song.
