The series chronicles the period in London from 1950-1978. Part 1 (1950-66) Britain comes out of War, The Beatles were formed and fashion and music centre around Carnaby St. Part 2 (1966-78) the height of Swinging London the summer of love The Beatles split and the youth revolution is over.
Carnaby Street, the Soho backstreet that spawned the swinging 60s tells the story how a generation that came out of war torn Britain started a cultural revolution that changed fashion and music forever. This was the time of sex, drugs and rock n roll, Mods, Hippies, female liberation, drugs and of course the summer of love.
The story of the Soho backstreet that made the world swing, is told by the people that were there, which include Roger Daltrey (The Who), Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits), Garry Leeds (The Walker Brothers), The Beatles, Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones), Donovan, Frank Alan (The Searchers), Tony Calder (Immediate Records), the Fashionistas from the time and many more, they all give personal insight into the iconic time of the 1960s, how it came to be and how it came to pass.
It is rare for a film to have such open and honest interviews from such wide ranging people. Combining current and archive interviews the film gives a real sense and feel of that time. We are taken on a journey from what caused the 60s youth revolution and what brought it to an end. The film is brought to life by Original music from the EMI archives, rare archive film footage, photographs from Phillip Townsend, the 1st person to photograph The Rolling Stones as well as the Beatles and others, personal photographs from the stars themselves and animations of 1960s illustrations from the Artist Malcolm English.
With 30 extra video clips from the interviews about the myths of what created that time, Carnaby Street, the Soho backstreet that spawned the swinging 60s creates a unique experience and insight into the lives and people who changed fashion and music worldwide. This is the story of "Swinging London", this is the story of the 60s.

I worked for a memorable week as a writer on Daltrey Sings Townshend at Carnegie Hall. I sat in a small office with Roger for a couple hours, working on various introductions, and he would stop by and just chat with me while the orchestra was rehearsing in the studio over the course of several days. He could not have been kinder and more pleasant with me, and I was a very low man on the totem pole in that room! He would actually seek me out, plop down in a chair, and start talking movies, because I told him I was also a screenwriter. You would not be disappointed if you met him. A sweet, genuine guy. His wife was lovely, too. Both of them.

On another video, someone said they met Pete and, in spite of all the comments about his arrogance, they said he couldn't have been nicer. Like everyone else, I'm sure they have their moments, especially when it comes to attention seeking fans. If I ever met Pete, I'd tell him that his opinion of the album title "All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes" so underestimates how accurate it really is! Oh, and I'd ask him if he and David Gilmour ever compared notes about "guitar tone"...there are some Who songs that sound like Gilmour could be playing it (at least I hear it), and I've wondered who got the sound from who. When Pete started using David in the 80s, it made so much sense that he would use DG.

Quadrophenia, for me, is THE greatest album ever made. It is as fresh and timeless today as when it was first released. It fills me with excitement every time That I play it. I will be seventy this year. If I could only ever own one album it would be Quadrophenia. It's an absolute masterpiece !

I feel exactly the same way. I listened to it a lot as a teen and then did not hear it for many decades. I’m in my 50s now and I feel like it was written for me as I am now, and hearing it as a teen was just a glimpse or preview. There is just nothing like it.

I was 14 when Quadrophenia came out, and it was the first album to truly speak to me. It totally changed the way I thought about music in general. One set of lyrics from Cut My Hair just hit me like a hammer between the eyes... "Why do I have to move with a crowd Of kids that hardly notice I'm around I work myself to death, just to fit in" Yes Roger, it truly is timeless.

Every interview with Roger Daltrey is interesting, informative, insightful and entertaining. He is honest without being arrogant. On the contrary, he is down to earth and humble. He has a great sense of humour and a very engaging way of telling a story. On top of that, he has one of the best voices in any musical genre. What an icon.

Roger is always a great interview but him and Pete Townshend have had plenty of disagreements over the years. I remember Pete saying that many times he would look at Roger on stage and think to himself, "You fucking wanker." But Roger and Pete are like family and like most families, they haven't always gotten along with each other.

I remember listening to the Who back in the 80's and 90's and people thinking they were "has beens." This guy gave me a bunch of Who records including Who's Next and I remember listening to it the first time. It seemed like all of the sudden around 2008 people started wearing mod outfits in my town and who it was suddenly really hip to listen to and dress like the Who. It still is pretty timeless.

In 1975 I went for English learning from Switzerland, we were a bunch of young Swiss boys and guys , when we went to London it was SOOO exciting and we caught the Tommy Movie. What an experience. I always like when My favorite is the Artists favorite .I rarely listen to Tommy ,or care that much for it ,and it was no less genius. Quad just struck a chord with me(and of course Who's Next) ,even though the fashion story made little sense to me,I see how it was a huge influence on those living it.As a kid in 79 I questioned my friend on how he liked this "old crap" until I listened more and then became influenced by Townshend the composer .

I feel about Quadrophenia the way George Martin felt about the White Album- it should have been compressed into one really great album. A lot of information and some of the songs not that strong. I was never a fan of double albums because it's almost impossible to sustain quality over that length of time.

What made the Who different? It starts with having a lunatic drummer. They were a good R&B band before he arrived and afterwards, never the same. You have a virtuoso bassist - I imagine that was uncommon for the day. In an interview, Townshend goes on about how Entwistle saw that there weren't electric bassists out there who stood out and then proceeded to fill the role of best bassist in rock. And then you have a traumatized kid looking for spiritual fulfillment using artistic excuses to try to explain the anger and frustration of his youth. So, there's a reason they're a lot different than anyone else.

The first Who album that I had was "The Hooligans" a compilation album that my parents bought me for Christmas. Side two was essentially half of "Who's Next" and as the only intelligent 13 year old of my group of friends, I would bring it to play side two over and over again during our adolescent parties. In a dystopian future, rock concerts are banned. People started coming together secretly. A universal grid was developed where everyone would wear an interactive suit to tap into it, and experience the music together. Ultimately, each persons vibrations came together to form one perfect note, and everyone disappeared into the cosmos. Add in a handful of hippies living off the land, and a couple of romantic protagonists, and there you go.

I took my week's paper route money and bought "Quadrophenia," maybe a month after its release. From the first time I dropped the needle, I was obsessed with it. My 14-year-old self, and my 66-year-old self, found it to be the Who's most compelling, complex, and musically dense album, far surpassing "Tommy" or "Who's Next" (which signaled Pete's developing skill as a serious composer), making it their crowning achievement (IMHO), and one of the pinnacles of rock recording.

Quadrophenia was a great film too. A wonderfully insightful snapshot of young life for young people in that time period of mods & rockers. Many youngsters today would never understand it, because life under the yolk of ‘technology’ and social media is so utterly different from the days that seem so long ago now, when you had to remember to say to your mates ‘same time here next week then guys? See you then mate take care’. And that was it. You KEPT that appointment, because if you didn’t, you MISSED OUT on seeing your best mates for another full week. LIFE taught you that. Kids today truly don’t know what young life is all about. And now I’m sounding like an old fart! Lol at least we knew how to live. 👍🇬🇧

The movie and music have more than stood the test of time and let's not forget the movie started the mod revival of 1980 (ish) which was MASSIVE. I remember Scarborogh sea front being just a sea of green and it was quite a spectacle to behold; shame about the violence that went with it though.
