MY UNPOPULAR BANKAI THEORY: Aizen never used his Bankai because his Bankai’s ability, similar to Urahara’s, isn’t exactly a combat-centric zanpakuto. Quite the opposite! Kyoka Suigetsu’s Shikai ability is Kanzen Saimin, the ability to make anyone see what he wants them to see upon seeing his Shikai’s release. However, his Bankai is the opposite. The Bankai is the ability to make HIMSELF able to see anything, so long as he witnesses his own Bankai’s release. “Mirror Flower, Water Moon.” Initially believing his Bankai was a dud and didn’t work, it was only through witnessing his zanpakuto’s release in the reflection of the water that he was able to realize the omniscience his Bankai grants him. Like astral projection, Aizen suddenly is fed the knowledge of all things around him. Whatever he wishes to know the nature of, he perfectly reads that thing, its powers, its past, the very nature and entire concept of said thing. It allows Aizen to better understand the world around him, to become aware of things as though he possessed the eyes of a god. And that’s when he got a little too curious, peering forth into the cosmos to the origin of all things, only to see the Soul King for what he is: possibly some Lovecraftian horror, a cosmic contradiction with didn’t sit well with Aizen. Realizing the nature of such an entity and its origin probably made him hate the Soul King to the extent he did, and the Bankai could be the reason why he became so smart, why he knows stuff far beyond all other Captains. Perhaps even his Bankai revealed to him the secrets of the universe necessary to understand what it took to create his half of the Hōgyoku, and from there, all that was needed was to become sufficiently strong enough to carry out his plan. Then again...perhaps what horrified him most about his realization of the Soul King was the fact that, like Yhwach, Aizen was an unnatural spawn of the Soul King. His strength maybe comes from being a part of the Soul King, and his quest to become that which stands above Soul Reapers and Hollows is a more natural pursuit than you’d think for him. Truly, I couldn’t tell you. I just think Aizen is unnaturally smart and well-informed, for someone who isn’t even as old as Shunsui or Ukitake. I also think that he’s smart enough to have realized that if his Bankai could eliminate the Gotei 13 all at once, he could have done so after Yamamoto was curbstomped by Wonderweiss. The Hōgyoku was his answer for not having the necessary raw power sufficient for carrying out the next stage in his plan. Not that he wasn’t strong, but he probably thought he couldn’t rely on illusions alone against Squad Zero. Also, though his Arrancar were strong, he soon realized they’d be fodder compared to what Aizen would be when merged with the Hōgyoku. Anyway, yeah. That’s my theory. That Aizen’s Bankai is useless in the heat of battle, but key to understanding his knowledge and past, and his hatred for the very nature of reality.

Like how we find out about the left and right hands of the soul king as well as some of the other Quincy (don’t remember their names) are the heart of the soul king and such. Partially true, but Ichigo was the only one powerful enough to battle Aizen into a weakened enough state for the seal to even take place. Dangai Ichigo was the only one fast enough and strong enough to contend with Aizen’s new and overwhelming reiatsu, and also wasn’t under the spell of Kyoka Suigetsu. To put it in perspective, Aizen was still transforming, and was SO powerful that he had to be literally cleaved in half to even be remotely weak enough for the seal to work and have the hogyoku reject him as a host. This exhibits how powerful Aizen’s foe has to be to weaken him, and only Ichigo and his Final Getsuga Tensho form with Mugetsu could pull it off

I wouldn't be surprised if Kyoka Suigetsu's spirit was even more egotistical than Aizen himself and never saw him as worthy of seeing its true Bankai. Similar to how Ruriro Kujaku essentially half-asses its release when Ayasegawa calls it "Fuji Kujaku"; maybe KS' Bankai is the Kanzen Saimin, but because Aizen is ridiculously powerful even a half-assed bankai release on his zanpakuto's part is broken as fuck. The Zanpakutou seem to reflect their owners. That being said, Ichigo seemed to have the impression that there was something under Aizen's façade which is part of why he failed. I wonder of Aizen got so good at manipulating others that he completely forgot what he himself originally wanted. Perhaps his sword would show that hidden side, they seem to be perceptive of things that even the people they are reflecting are not aware of.

@@joaquinriosrodriguez7316 A curious idea. I have always wondered how the interactions of other characters with their own Zanpakuto affect their perspectives. We have seen how Ichigo interacts with his (regardless of his awareness of the true nature of his Zanpakuto) and how that has led to a significant part of his development over the series. Outside of the rather enjoyable (In my opinion, I tend to rather enjoy filler arcs so it could be just me) filler arc we don't see the characters interact with their own swords as much. I would have liked for Kubo to expand on that just a bit, but that is just me. It occurs to me that there would likely be interactions between other characters and their respective weapons in undergoing similar development because it seems to me that a number of people underwent changes as the series went on. Not as much or as overtly as Ichigo, but still noticeable. Rukia, Renji, Byakuya, Chad, Uryu, Orihime, Kenpachi, and others including even Yamamoto. I would imagine that they would have interacted with their own Zanpakuto at some point to ponder the change.

The way it was described to me, Aizen never used his bankai because when he merged with his sword he already had a much greater power, just like Ichigo's mugetsu. Even though he didn't use his bankai, he still has access to all his swords powers like when he hypnotized Yhwach while sitting there. I think that he should also be able to use his bankai powers just as easily. While he never said "bankai" or had a flashy new form, I think that he still used his bankai ability. While fighting against Yhwach, he gets impaled and says something like "You think you are looking at Ichigo? Fascinating." This line wouldn't make any sense if he was using his regular powers to control Yhwach's senses cause he would know what illusion he was putting Yhwach under. This makes me think that Aizen's bankai is some kind of illusion that draws upon the thoughts and memories of the person he hits it with rather than creating an illusion himself. This would explain why he thought what Yhwach saw was interesting and how the illusion is so relevant despite Aizen not being able to witness any of the events that transpired earlier. Ichigo and Renji both appear in Aizen's illusion despite Aizen not knowing those two were the ones after Yhwach. Aizen could have sensed what was going and an guessed at some things but there is no reason why Aizen should have been able to create an illusion of Ichigo's new bankai without having seen the blade before. So Aizen's bankai in my theory loses the ability to carefully create any illusion Aizen desires for the added ability to use things from the target's memories to create a more convincing illusion to better fool the target.

I always thought Yamamoto’s line revealed another one of aizen’s weaknesses - that being his limited perspective. Yamamoto knows what it’s actually like to stab in the gut, Aizen (presumably) doesn’t. If he doesn’t know what something feels like, he can try to replicate it, but it might not be accurate. Sorta like if someone could see infrared, he could TRY to mess with it, but he has no clue what infrared would look like to them, much less know how to change it.

But that would be pretty inconsistent with what we know about shikai and Bankai. To use shikai, you call out a unique command and then say your zanpakuto's name. To use Bankai, you just say "Bankai" and your Bankai's name. So Aizen should only be able to activate his shikai by saying "Shatter, Kyoka Suigetsu" and he shouldn't be able to activate his Bankai, without saying "Bankai".

When Aizen said it was interesting that Yhwack thought he had impaled Ichigo, I think what he found interesting was the fact that Yhwach was still affected by the hypnosis even after absorbing the Soul King. I think this was because Ywach encountered Aizen at some point back in the initial Quincy wars and Aizen used his Kyoka Suigetsu, but somehow Yhwach escaped without dying, and that also explains why Aizen was rated as a Top War Threat. On the bankai thing, I think it just really isn't suited to battle situations. I think it was shown when Yhwach returned to the Soul Society extermination and mentions he was gone longer than he thought. This is Aizen's bankai; the ability to manipulate your 6th sense, or Circadian Rhythm. Which a pre-req could be, to be under the shikai hypnosis. This line of logic ties a few points together actually.

I got the idea from seeing his comment during his fight with Yhwach that Aizen's Bankai is just an amped version of his Shikai, only difference being that he can't control the hypnosis and it's his Zanpakuto spirit that controls it. And that loss of control was why he was never willing to use it. "So you think you're gazing at Ichigo...fascinating."

I like the theory that attempts to explain why Aizen is so strong after being sealed: He actually WAS evolving just before being sealed, but Urahara figured that after being dealt a blow like Mugetsu, he'd be able to sow enough doubt in Aizen's mind for the seal to take effect. It's entirely possible that when Kyoka Suigetsu itself is making direct contact, you can sense its spiritual pressure. The illusion can fall apart if you make physical contact with the 'projector'.

I've heard it said that why the "touch the sword" move breaks the illusion, is tied to the Zanpakuto's name and what it refers to: "Mirror Flower Water Moon" refers to the impossibility of trying to catch hold of something through it's reflection, such as a flower in a mirror, or the Moon reflected in water, with Kyoka Suigetsu being the flower/Moon, and its illusions being the reflections. By actually _touching_ the sword, and thus actually _catching what you are trying to grab hold of_ you invalidate the metaphor, thus breaking the illusion.

I think we have seen Aizen's Bankai; he manipulated Juha's sense of time. Sense of time is not one of the five (or six if you include spiritual senses) main senses. The discussion here was if Yama was correct when he was stabbed by Aizen and said he could sense his sword's spiritual pressure. I like to think its a similar weakness to Tosen's bankai in that usually it isn't really one. But having an opponent that gets impaled and decides to say impaled and use it to their advantage makes a weird sort of sense with the rules being what they are. As for taste in direct combat you can actually make someone over or underestimate the damage they've taken. Should you cough up blood it means there is most likely internal bleeding the first thing you would notice is the taste of blood. He can make you taste more or less blood which can be supplemented by visuals and sensations etc the lightest tap could feel like you are being absolutely destroyed or for characters like Kenpachi to feel as if they never took any damage in the first place and over estimate their own condition.

I've come to the thought recently that Aizen never achieved Bankai. I think he doesn't have Bankai and used his Shikai to pass off as if he had achieved Bankai, and noone is going to argue with the word of the Head-Captain and at least two other captains to bear witness. And over time he likely had plenty of opportunities to release his Shikai to convince the others of the Gotei 13.
