For those who are arguing about the role of the piano, Ravel's manuscript has the title "Sonata for piano and violin" in his own handwriting. They are clearly equal partners. Sometimes the violin is accompanying the piano, and sometimes vice versa. Neither one is subservient to the other.

One of the best interpretations I've seen. To me, there's no particular right or wrong way to perform 'Blues', as long as it's done with soul. She's got it.

Why so much criticism for Ms. Yonemoto? She is obviously an excellent violinist and a charismatic performer. I really feel that she is doing an amazing job of presenting the soul of this passionate piece.

I like this performance very much! Is very well thought out and still played very natural. Profound and genuine enjoyment of the two musicians, what we are witnessing well as listeners. "Thank you for the music!" Ist sehr gut durchdacht und trotzdem sehr natuerlich gespielt. Tief gehender, echter Genuss der beiden Musiker, welchen wir als Zuhoerer gut miterleben koennen.

this performance of this music opened my eyes and ears to a very new relationship with Ravel for me. thankyou Kyoko for your subtle and/but refreshing expressions that excited visually the response to the music. I have always felt that there is frequently an "Orientalism" with some of R´s works..and here I could feel it quite marked. excellent ,strong,felt..involving. thankyou.

@Calinoma As a jazz musician/composer I'd like to clarify something. Any piece may contain certain harmonies that are thought of as "jazz" harmonies. There is no jazz structure per se. But what is truly the difference between jazz and any other music, is the fact the performance of a piece includes improvisation. So of course any piece that is through-composed is by definition: not jazz. I don't believe that the composers that are influenced by "jazz" are trying to create jazz

I think this is great. How much blues - and what type - could have Ravel heard by the time he composed this piece? He certainly couldn't have heard any Delta blues. He could have been familiar with bluesy jazz and some "classic blues". But, let's face it, this is a lot more interesting than a straightforward 12 bar blues!

@LordCalvinHastings What plucking the strings? It's a technique called pizzicato and is used frequently; it does not damage the instrument.
@AleGZPiano13 жыл бұрын
@McSplat Thanks webster, but like i said, it's Ravel, not a baroque or CLASSICAL piece (for which the definition you gave applies). EG: with Chopin, a Scherzo changes completely. The idea of music evolving over time is for things like this to happen, a two instrument sonata ceases to be something with a simple soloist and becomes a composition for this two equally relevant instruments. As much protagonism as the violin may have, that's no excuse for not mentioning or congratulating the Pianist.
@archiloquedenaxos16 жыл бұрын
the music is some notes written on a page....the "ACTUAL" music, is that which you hear here, played by LIVING BREATHING FEELING HUMANS....with every right to interpret it HOW THEY FEEL IT. this is the reason why music is a living thing..not a fossil, not archaeology, not museum...but very alive and INTERPRETED... interpreted from the dry notes on the page to the sound.. with its miriad of possible ways to be sounded.

To begin a comment by saying "she should... or should not..." kills the very nature of music and art, that is freedom. Music and art are concepts born from the freedom of mind. Maybe it is best to reduce yourself to the results of one performance in particular. Or maybe just enjoy the sounds without the images.
@AleGZPiano12 жыл бұрын
@McSplat You say that. I say only a fool would say, in any piece, that an instrument is more important than the other just because it carries the melody. Specially in Ravel. They are not equals, never said that. One is accompanying, the other is singing. One is a piano, the other is a violin. But both instruments play the piece. One cannot play without the other. It's a violin and piano sonata.
@AleGZPiano13 жыл бұрын
@McSplat i've heard and read both official titles, with and without the "Piano", but never before have i heard "and piano accompaniment" as part of the official title: that's just not true And i can't really agree with you, and i doubt any expert would. It's inevitable & unavoidable for one of the instruments to have more protagonism than the other (specially if one of them is a violin, a melodic instrument), but that doesn't mean that it's more important per se. It's Ravel, not a baroque piece

Ravel was certainly influenced by jazz, but he, along with a number of other early 20th century European composers, never could truly capture it. They wrote jazz harmonies and ideas into pieces with a more traditional western structure. So don't look at this piece and criticize it for not being jazz or blues - it's truly a western composition, with a few new world harmonies thrown in. Of course this piece isn't authentic jazz, but it's still a great piece of music. Let's just agree on that?
