For those who’ve been worried about Genki’s health. I happened to read the zoo keepers’ latest gorilla journal (November, 2019).
It says this way... (Summary, hope this helps.)
We have seen Genki holding her head in her hands since last month. We often see this pose of her during winter or on rainy days, which is her regular pose when she feels cold. She has lost some weight lately (her favorite plants are out of season now), and has lost some of her hair because of Kintaro clinging to her. We think that’s why she started to feel cold earlier than usual this season. That behavior of her holding her head, you might think she has a headache. However, she doesn’t always do that. In fact, we hardly see that when it’s warm or she is eating food, but we do more often on rainy/cloudy and chilly days. Also, she does have a good appetite as usual. Considering these facts, we don’t think that she is in bad shape. For Genki, we’ve been trying some things to keep her warm. Keeping their rooms and outside enclosure a bit warmer than usual with floor heating, and turning on heat fans, etc. We also gave her a warm wool lap blanket, but she is not interested in it. Instead Momotaro used it as you might expect lol. We’ve been giving the gorillas nutritious food more than usual and trying specially for Genki to get their favorite grass (which is barely available this time of year) so that they will gain weight. We are going to keep watching out for not only Genki but all our gorillas in order that they can stay well and live healthy lives.

Genki you are the best mum in the gorilla world , you have come such a long way from that shy wee girl that use to hide behind her mum AND what you have been through you are beautiful and such a lovely mum to your two boys, we love you 💜🍉🍅

Robin, Yes, very true! She loves her babies and is such a doting Mommy. She does a great job! Love this little family. I would LOVE to see older videos of Genki with parents in her paternal family. Anyone have any "archive videos of Genki?" Would love to see her! ;-) Beautiful comment, Robyn!

I love Momotaro and the entire family. O noticed that Genki never showed the love and affection to Gentaro when he was young as she does Kintaro. I think she didn't bond well with Gentaro due to not breastfeeding and having him with her the first 6 or so months he was with caretakers. I feel for him.He seems to be always looking for attention from her in any form. I wish Momotaro had a much BETTER enclosure with alot of space and green grass. I feel for him and them all.

I love this family! Genki job is to take care of her baby, Kintaro! She goes to extreme measures to protect him from his brother. Gentaro waits for the best time to run by, looting his baby brother, he never brakes strive! Genki loves her baby...the best Mom! Thanks to all the people caring for Momotaro family!

Yes genki is to me the best mother I have seen because she has put up with alot like gentaro,s behaviour I have watched her breast feeding kintaro she's so sweet she has to have patience of a saint she an incredible mum I think she should be given mother of the year award 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😘😘👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

It doesn't seem that genski likes Montero at all. And I have noticed she has been holding her head with her hands could she be suffering with stress and having head aches? Montero seems to rule with fear, intemadation. When there at the gate genski gets so nervous and seems to communicate to the keepers hurry up hurry up give me something to eat... Maybe they need something more to stimulate there interest ? You are the professionals and seem to care for the gorillas or you wouldn't take so much time filminggenski and her older son are my favorites I watch them as often as I can but I hope she is well. Jennifer Cohen It’s obvious that they aren’t lovely dovey, lol. Female gorillas tend to keep away from males except when they are in estrus. I’m not an expert though. Momotaro is greedy and often hogs their favorite food. They are separated at least at dinner time. I’m not a professional and this is my first time visiting the zoo. I live so far away from there that I don’t think I can go back anytime soon, sadly. I love Gentaro, too. I’ve been rooting for him since he was a baby. I know everyone is worried about Genki’s headaches. If that is so serious the keepers and veterinarians would take action. I trust them. Thank you so much for your kind words!💕

Their favorite grass is in season now so she’s been putting on some weight lately.😁 But she’s still in good shape. I don’t think she’s going to get pregnant for the next couple of years as Kinney is only two.
