My friend went to Japan and wrote about his experiences there. Tough times for visitors but their hospitality was great. I put it together in a book for him. Great video. I wish my friend had a chance to see Geisha.

What a great video, I have bee to Kyoto several times now, and I love it! It is to my mind the best place to visit in Japan for tourists due to the Temples etc. Do what ever you can to save the money to go there as I did and you won't regret it. The people are truly kind, and all the young people are taught English in school. So visit soon!

She is a Maiko, Geisha in training. Long Obi, long kimono sleeves, and a red collar. She is still beautiful, however. This is my favorite part of Japanses culture; their Geishas.

Anita, if you live in the U.S. as I do, then you should learn that we have taken most of our traditions from other countries. Though it is mainly from the countries of Europe, not Asia. (Though it would be nice to have some Japanese traditions too.)

You're mistaken, really. There is no such rule. The rule there is (and not in all towns and districts) is that they refuse first-timers that try to organize a party without having an introduction from a regular customer. This is not particularly aimed at foreigners, and applies only to the organizer - he is allowed to invite first-timers, foreigners, whatever (his status with the establishment will suffer if they misbehave).

Depending on where you're from I would give the advice to read "Geisha. A life" (US!) or "Geisha of Gion" (UK!) from Mineko Iwasaki... It is way better than Arthur Goldens "Memoirs". And you get a real glimpse of the geisha world, because one of the ladies Arthur Golden interviewed to wrote it, to make clear that the "facts" of his book are NOT true.

Define "happily" and define "rich". I've lived in the US all my life- it's the best place in the world for personal liberty. I'm quite "happy" with that, penniless or not. I make about $70,000 a year. Am I rich? No, but way better off than the majority of the people on this planet. Ask just about any immigrant (legal or not) here in the States if they're "happy" or "rich"- they wouldn't come here thousands a day otherwise. How "rich" does one need to be, to be "happy"?

ehcatog: Thanks- there are other countries with specific advantages over the States, but overall, none compare. I WOULD like the US to be more careful and respectful, but our politicians are usually quite wealthy, and I don't know any humble wealthy people. At the same time, without American intervention since her creation, the world would be considerably more dismal. As to other countries being "Americanised", well hey, the people know what they like! ;) (that being freedom, of course)

which country would you say is better? Did you know after the war we gave democracy to them? No other country is more generous with its time and money. We give millions of dollars to other countries and help countries that are being annihilated by dictators. USA is not perfect but it is the most free.

LOLOL, what a stupid comment. Anything to talk bad about Americans. One of accents is CLEARLY not American. OMG I'm laughing so hard. How exactly does a n American go about stealing a tradition? Who stole it exactly? I live in the US and I have not found the ancient Japanese ways but I'll keep looking. If we stole it it should be here somewhere. ***Great video, very interesting.***

Yeah, the good 'ol USA did all that for nothing. Sure. Had nothing to do with Japanese invasion of other countries who were allies or friends of good 'ol USA. Had nothing to do with Japanese imperialism. Japan had no bases in the Pacific Rim? Nope, no good reason at all here!

So what you're saying is that because the West didn't share resources with Japan, it was OK for Japan to go to war with its neighbors. That's OK then! And, no, I didn't say the war started because of the slavery!? Ya know what? You're just another one of those people who whine about the past, wishing "bad" things had never happened. How far back ya wanna go? Shall all of the East demand apologies and reparations from Mongolia? Howabout from Italy (the Roman Empire)?
