Thanks man. I do love the sound of the KZ. Now I need to fine-tune the carb jetting in the spring.

Nice Kawasaki. The chrome swingarm and aftermarket shocks are a nice touch.

Thank you man. It seems only older guys appreciate chrome on these vintage bikes. Younger people like it more blacked out. All that shine really does it for me. Thanks for your interest.

I had a 1978 KZ 650... I hot rodded it with carbs off of a 1,000 tuned it with a Kerker 4 into 1 pipe and that thing was mad crazy fast in the early 90s. I was surprised. The KZ was a popular racing bike in the 70s and have a following. All the way up to the KZ1000 police bike. They were pretty fast.

In the 80s, when I was old enough to start thinking about motorcycles, the KZ was the coolest looking thing rolling around town, and I wanted one. I've been riding this one since 1992. Only know, I've given it a pretty good HP bump. Lucky for me, lots of people are still interested in the vintage KZ's. Aftermarket and used parts are still plentiful.

In 1983 I bought a 1976 KZ 900 with the 1105 kit , I have two of them now , one is all stock , the other has a 77 , 1000 motor in it with the 1075 kit

Agreed. This bike is a little obnoxious with the baffle out, but it sure does sound cool. I've lusted after the V-Max for many years as well. I really like the muscle cruiser style of bike. Comfort and awesomeness all rolled into one. Thanks for checking it out.

The Kaw Thou! Dad had one, kept it at work so Mom wouldn't know. He never had to ask us to keep it a secret, we knew enough not to say anything...
@KZRevival16 күн бұрын
That's a funny story. Dad was willing to risk the wrath of mom to have a bike. I can definitely understand the overwhelming draw of this motorcycle. When my adult boys were young, they used to ask me why I didn't get a newer bike. My response was, "Because they don't make cool bike anymore." Needless to say, their appreciation of the KZ has changed. Thanks for checking it out.

Know of any reputable builders in the St. Louis, MO area?
@KZRevival13 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, I do not. Anyone willing to work on or build vintage motorcycles is becoming harder to find. No one wants to work on carbs, apparently. That's what drove me to start doing the work myself. I'm glad I did because I enjoy the work. Depending on what you want and willingness to travel, I would consider doing a build. I live south of Chicago, not that close to St. Louis.

Nice bike but how does it stack up against my Yam fz09 ???
@KZRevival14 күн бұрын
I don't know much about the FZ09, but my guess is my old KZ would hold its own pretty well. While your bike is more modern, you have around 105 rear wheel horsepower and a short wheel base. I don't know what my horsepower is yet but I've added a lot of Performance upgrades. I'm fairly certain I have a lot more horsepower. While you or your ECU are trying to keep the front end on the ground, I would be making an unclosable gab, at least in the quarter mile. Just my thoughts with no evidence. How do you think your FZ09 would hold up against this KZ?
@leewhaley55214 күн бұрын
@KZRevival Well, I really don't know. I've had many bikes over the years and now at 77 I've ended up with the 09. When I saw your video my first thought was that your bike was a predecessor to bikes like the fz09. At this point I don't ride too aggressively but I have pushed my bike pretty hard and do appreciate the slipper clutch and traction control, which your bike probably doesn't have. I was intrigued by your bike when I saw it and just wondered how similar it is to my fz09.
@KZRevival14 күн бұрын
You are correct, I don't have any electronic assist for traction or wheelie control. It's solely up to me to manage traction and wheel stand. I do have the benefit of a raked front end and an extended swingarm as well as some pretty sticky Metzler tires. I've built a hotrod, but I'm no racer. I have a friend I ride with who has a 1985 Kawasaki ZL900 Eliminator. My goal is to beat that bike. I finished the bike this past summer but struggled with some carburation issues that I thankfully overcame. Just to late in the riding season to enjoy very much. Big pistons, big carbs, big cams, a port job and larger valves make this bike a monster. Not very comfortable for very long, but I smile a lot when I ride. Braided brake lines and upgraded suspension front and back also help with comfort.

Why does wheel turn. Did you start it in gear with clutch in and let her out? Or is that a centrifugal clutch or why does wheel spin?
@KZRevival18 күн бұрын
No, the bike is not in gear. The KZ has a wet clutch, which means the steel and friction plates are bathed in oil, and the plates ride pretty close to each other when the bike is in neutral. There is a small amount of friction that causes the wheel to spin when up on a stand. This is normal.

Beautiful bike. What is top speed on a built KZ1000 like that?
@KZRevival14 күн бұрын
I'm not sure. I've had this up to 140 mph, and it has more, but it's screaming. Years ago, before I completed all this performance work, I added a 37 tooth rear sprocket, 2 extra teeth, for some cheap power gains. I'm now ready to go back to the smaller sprocket. I have a sprocket along with a master link, I just want to do a dyno run before I swap it out. The smaller sprocket will keep it from screaming at highway speeds like it does now. I've given the bike plenty of power to make up for it.
@alvinclifton903211 күн бұрын
what kind of swing arm do you have on that bike?
@KZRevival11 күн бұрын
Sorry man. I've had this swingarm over 30 years. They are pretty hard to come by anymore. I don't know of anyone making them. Trak Dynamics will make a very nice arm at whatever length you want, but it will cost you about $1500. I see custom KZ's in Japan with aftermarket swingarms, but I have never reached out to the builders about getting one. You could try doing that.

@KZRevival13 күн бұрын
Yes, i understand. It's not for everyone. When I bought this bike 30+ years ago, it was modified way back then. I never had it in a stock configuration. However, a KZ that is set up like a drag bike with the straight bars and extended swingarm, that is exactly the look that gets me excited. I post the sort of videos that I look for, but I'm not really finding. I appreciate your consideration.
