It bothers me that we will never get a sequel for that. I don't trust Rockstar to do anything besides GTA from now on. I fully expect GTA Online 2 to carry Rockstar until GTA 7 and so on. I don't think we will even get a new Red Dead. LA Noire is a great game, however I think the main story lacks emotional depth and it only becomes the focus towards the last couple of hours. I don't think we really get to understand or see a personal side to Cole until the ending. Also there is a lack of consequences to your choices. I remember them promoting this game by saying that you could choose the wrong suspect and that there would be consequences to that. But all you get is a cutscene of your boss yelling at you or being thankful. I think a sequel could focus on a ''Good cop/Bad cop'' system, kind of like the honor system from Red Dead. Driving like a mad man, taking bribes, choosing the wrong suspects, getting drunk in bars, missing a lot of clues in crime scenes, beating up your suspects or yelling at them slowly changes the story and how the world reacts to your character. Suspects become more agressive or easily intimidated, your workmates are dismissive and hostile, your boss doesn't like you, etc. But being a good cop could make other detectives respect you and help you out with clues. Suspects are more open to talk to you, but some might try to take advantage of your good nature and try to deceive you. Shops can give you discounts and your boss gives you more access to better gear and weapons. Refusing bribes can make some corrupt cops target you.

It really is disheartening that Rockstar just subsists on the same game for so long because we get so few games from them now.

_"I don't trust Rockstar to do anything besides GTA from now on"_ - yes, and now head writer Dan Houser has left it'll be interesting to see what happens with _GTA VI_ I have a feeling it'll be one of those "pander to everybody, appeal to nobody" deals which will initially impress people with the visuals, the world, the immersion, but over time people will be making videos that point out the shortcomings in the writing which became apparent the more they played it. Similar to _GTA V_ where when you've played it long enough you realise how one-dimensional and dickish Trev, Mick and Frankie are and it really takes the shine off the whole thing, but worse. My prediction is that it'll be written by committee but trying to capture that Dan Houser vibe, and the piecemeal nature of using a whole team of people to replace one person might not be obvious at first but it'll come out when it's been on the market a year or two and the wow factor has worn off.

I know it’s a video game, I know it’s scripted, and I know they had to probably do multiple takes, but 2:23:13 does the perfect job at capturing what a man looks like when he’s ready to lay it ALL on the line. That motion capture really shined in some aspects and that scene was one of them.

I don’t know if I can say LA Noire is a great game, but I can definitely say I respect it for taking so many big swings. In an era where so much of Triple A gaming was swiftly becoming a grey morass of samey FPS games, it was a truly unique experience. Even now there’s nothing else really like it. The Getaway is an underrated PS2 gem, and was actually a game very much ahead of his time, introducing bold mechanics that were unheard of at the time, like the total absence of an hud, the first draft of the game featured live action cutscenes and most prominently they re-created around 10 square miles of real London, a feat that not many games achieved even in the following generations. I never knew (or at least, never really connected the dots) up until now that Team Bondi was in fact made of people who worked at that game, now I get why Noire actually felt so familiar. They had a soft spot for cinematographic storytelling, so sad that the team disbanded because the game sold poorly for their expectations, they knew how to tell a story.

This game absolutely did not claim to be, nor was it considered any sort of GTA adjacent product at any point in its marketing. In fact, there was nothing that alluded to gameplay or driving before release. We didn’t really even know it was open world. It was a detective game set in LA and you were a conflicted main character who was around for the black dahlia murders. That was it. I worked for GameStop around the release of this game, I was at the midnight, all that. It’s a great game, but it didn’t sell like mad the way it should’ve.

I was really excited for LA Noire and admittedly I was disappointed with it but I still REALLY liked the game. I just think it suffered from a few flaws. 1. I didn't like how for 2 or so 'desks' all the cases were 'red herrings' basically solving crimes where it was obvious the people we were chasing in the cases weren't the actual killers but you basically had to 'play along'. 2. Cole Phelps I think could have been a interesting protagonist but he wasn't the 'protagonist' of the story, to the point where the game has you playing the 'real protagonist' at the end. That in itself is a interesting concept but I think it could have been handled better. I think if anyone made a similar game they would need to embrace the key missing ingredient of noir detective stories, the Private, in the Private Investigator. Take the cops out of it and allow the player to pursue cases with a little bit more 'freedom' and not being so reliant on police. MAYBE you can help them out with some info and cases and as a result they give you favors/hints to help you on your case.

I didn't know they went back to "Good Cop" "Bad Cop" for the remaster iirc that's the way it was originally meant to be but they changed it to True & Doubt close to release, making the "Doubt" option result in an awkwardly aggresive response from Phelps in most interrogations. I think that's where the whole "Press X To Doubt" meme came from.

The only 2 issues with the game: - unnecessary open world - original/initial version was hollowed, 1/3 of the game was cut oit and sold as DLCs. These DLCs are immanent part of the game, without it plot has multiple holes/gaps and do not work well as a whole.

Team Bondi did a lot of research about L.A in the 40s, and at some point in development, they had zero developers taking care of the open world, so probably instead of just throwing a lot of work into that aspect, they just left it open and kept going into more important (functional) things to make the game reach a release date (since it got delayed a lot of years).

I actually very much agree, but I think the biggest issue with the plot point is kind of the limited time spent on his personal life. Like if I remember correctly you don't really see much of his relationship, you see some of it, maybe enough to be invested, at least enough to think Cole is a good husband. But then get surprised, which is the crap part because as you said it feels uncharacteristic. If instead you could see the stress of the job impact his personal life, see the relationship have little struggles, but then see him get attention from the other woman but keep it vague for the surprise. Maybe that would feel better. Or make it be player choice/player affected, either an out right choice, or something that comes as a result of how the cases go maybe. That way maybe it would feel more fitting. But yes I think it's a blemish in an otherwise truly great story

I’m currently playing this game for the first time and I’m happy to have found it. I always wanted a gta style detective game. I’d love to see a game like this based in 1930s Chicago, or maybe a county sheriff in the prohibition south fighting the moonshiners. High speed chases, farmland shoot outs, political corruption- it’s basically the perfect recipe for an amazing game with an amazing high stakes storyline.

L.A. Noire is the first game I ever 100%'d! I did it on every console except PS3 since I never had one lol. So the game has a close place to my heart! Wonder if we'll ever see a N.Y. Loire? My own critique is that I wish you could go for drinks or bowling with your partner instead of just landmarks and street crimes! I just end up driving into cars and pedastrians and my partner yelling at me! xD

The unspeakable things I’d do for a sequel to this. Myself and a hell of a lot of others wanted to see something where you play as Kelso in the 50s in a place like NYC, Chicago or Detroit, like a second half of Mafia 2 sort of vibe.

I really think L.A. Noire could have had just a bit more to it, not even a sequel, but just a bit more with Kelso.. But, I suppose that would then work against Cole's sacrifice, and that tragic noir-style ending. Given the kind of character we're shown in Jack Kelso, though, it just feels very odd if he just.. Lets everything be, but I suppose that's it.

man i remember playing this game back in the day it released on pc ......it was so badly optimized ,driving the car in the city was a big no no (i think that`s why they added the skip driving option)

Game was ahead of its time. Seriously if they made a sequel with modern development- it would be a massive hit. The investigation and dialogue choices make it perfect for streaming sites like twitch. Shame game was clunky due to it breaking new ground.

I want more games like this so bad I'm shocked there aren't more. My daughter and I played this together and it was SO FUN I was right about pretty much everything I was proud of myself however we lost interest after we graduated from homicide detective to organized crime, it just wasn't as good. Felt like we stepped down instead of up.

I reckon the three speech options should be termed Believe, Press and Refute. They should describe the actions the player is being invited to take, so the original formulation is out. The remaster terms aren't right either because 'Good cop' and 'Bad cop' simply suggest an approach the player might wish to take rather than the binary right answer/wrong answer dynamic the game is really offering. Also 'Accuse' is way off, because that option allows the player to present evidence that the witness is lying, it doesn't require us to accuse them of some crime.

I couldn't get past that title, so I'm glad you explained "almost perfect" is basically just a hook to get you to watch, and the game is nowhere near that. Interesting? Yes. Great storytelling? Oh, all over the game. Cutting edge facial performance capture for the time? Absolutely; I don't think it was bettered until _Red Dead Redemption II_ seven years and a much bigger budget later. As mentioned though, it is a world of jank. The driving is awful and I still don't understand why when Rockstar bought Team Bondi they didn't try and splice in some GTA driving physics. They could have since too, in the re-releases. If it were Mafia-esque with the "realistic" handling it would make sense to me but it feels both heavy and like the cars snap to rails, it's really weird. I play a lot of racing games and I've never been able to make the driving fun, so it's always "let partner drive" to skip them. It promotes save scumming if you want a perfect score, and the game really isn't developed with this in mind because very few if any of the cutscenes are skippable. There are other issues such as Cole really needing better character development to be likeable (as pointed out by The Salt Factory) but those are the two I thought of first. Basically it's an interesting game, it's a promising game, it might have been nice to see what the Team would have done should with a sequel. Which now we'll never get. C'est la vie.
@notsyzagts7967
@notsyzagts7967 Ай бұрын
Of course it wasn't developed with save scumming in mind, since you can't truly fail a case and your score is meaningless unless you care about the numbers/achievements. Although you can miss story beats due to unclear mission objectives, unskippable cutscenes can be annoying for any genre of videogame but it is what it is.

Bought the game at launch. Wasn’t disappointed because of the flaws, was disappointed because of the hype. Mechanics were wonky and seemed a bit unfair, if not cheap, however I played it back to back to see if I could do a better job. But looking at it now, the bold steps taken and the attention to doing things “the way you would or should do them” made this game age appropriately. Maybe it’s time to go back and play the game with the DLC.

I was twelve years old when this game dropped. I wouldn't get a console of the generation about half a year later, on Christmas 2011, my mother bought me an Xbox 360 with GTA IV and Midnight Club LA. Rockstar was part of my gaming lifestyle from early on, and I picked up this game a little later purely due to the little yellow box developer logo in the corner. It definitely took me some time to get used to this game, as it's an adult title fundamentally-and not in the same manner as GTA. This game introduced young me to the idea that video games could be seen as something more than they were.
