I'm replaying LA Noire right now, and I'm having so much fun playing Cole as an unpredictable, psychotic monster. Sure, I don't deliberately botch interrogations and stuff, but I do things like -Express nothing but giggling contempt for traffic laws, going so far as driving up to crime scenes backwards at full speed -Repeatedly shoulder check anybody who dares speak to me on the sidewalk ("You're that cop from the pape*WHUMP*) -Stand outside houses and stare in the windows for a while before going in to interview people -Make really shitty comments and wish my character would say them ("Mrs. Black, your paintings are terrible.") -Play around with people's stuff for way longer than necessary, including (as the player) making all the sound effects as I wave around a model airplane in front of the grieving widow My favorite was when the watch captain commended me for my "good public presence" after I spent over thirty straight seconds kicking said widow's watering can all around her front yard for no reason.

The big thing the game did wrong with questioning is that, in the early stages, "doubt" was called "press", as in "press for more information". Idk why they changed it to "doubt", since "press" is far more accurate as to what you do. If someone says something like "Ask Dave, he'll know better than me", then that's a truth, and out of "true, doubt, lie", you'd go true. However, out of "true, press, lie", you'd go for press, as you'd be fairly confident that he is either hiding something, or isn't taking this seriously, and pressing him for more will get more, than accepting what he is saying.

the gameplay for la noire isnt the same as grand theft auto. most of la noires gameplay revolves around puzzle solving and finding clues with a small percentage similar to that of a gta games. i wont deny theres similarities between core mechanics of say red dead and gta but thats such as cover based shooting but thats not specific to rockstar. theres other games which have more similarities to a rockstar game than they do to eachother but i dont see anyone saying that saints row for example is the same as red dead

One thing I love about rewatching old ZP episodes is occasionally catching a joke I didn't previously. For instance, this time through, I only just now got that "Johnny Suspect" and "Barbara Witness" have puzzle boxes for heads, because the interrogations are a puzzle game. And I somehow also missed that challenging Hitler at Pictionary includes a drawing of a pair of testicles...with an arrow pointing at only one of them. xD

2:39 - 2:45 That's the problem I had with the game. Like for example, on the first real investigation you do where you uncover a murderous Jew, on the first witness lady I clicked on doubt because her eyes were darting back in forth like she was having a seizure. Instead of replying with to her claims with snide skepticism as I had expected, Cole yelled "YOU'RE LYING!" and she starting bawling. I flopped that first part of the investigation and the game made damn sure to tell me how much I fucked up.

The original choices were, "coax, force, and lie," instead of, "truth, doubt and lie." So, that's why it seems like Cole is always going off when he "doubts" someone. He's not actually supposed to be doubting them, but intimidating them. ' "When we originally wrote the game, the questions you asked were coax, force and lie," says Brendan McNamara, who headed the project for the now defunct Team Bondi. "It was actually force because it was a more aggressive answer. That's the way we recorded it. But when the game came out, it was truth, doubt or lie. Everyone always says [Phelps voice actor] Aaron [Staton] on the second question is a psycho. So that's not his fault." '

@@nuclearfist420 Reason why Cole cheated on her wife is because of the war. The war fucked up his head. He searched for the attention he wanted. @@vsiglister2115 Cole never had the control over his life that he wanted. He wanted to be a glorious officer, but his men didn't respect him and he made a series of really bad calls. He became the rising star of the LAPD and found (with the player's help - meta, I know) that he had the control and respect he deserved. With his newfound inflated ego came the desire for more in his personal life, so he banged Elsa. The whole 3rd act of the game is Phelps attempting to redeem himself with the help of Kelso.

Shadow_Plays There's usually not usually enough methane in sewer gas for it to be explosive, especially not in a combined sewer like there'd be in LA in the 40s. The volume of the sewer lines and amount of inflow from greywater and storm drains would have maintained constant wastewater movement so the solid waste couldn't stay in one place to oxidize and release methane. Sewers are separated nowadays, though, so it's quite possible for the smaller wastewater lines to contain enough methane to combust (if they're improperly vented), but those lines are almost always too small to hold a person, much less two people and a flamethrower, and those people would probably be too busy vomiting and crying because they're swimming in shit to use a flamethrower. I never thought my experience working at a sewer inspection company would ever come out on KZbin, much less a video game review, haha. Ah, the memories of watching hours and hours and miles and miles of piping.

That would be hack and cliche. There's a reason why Moriarty, supposedly Sherlock Holmes's arch-nemesis, never appears in Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories until the story where he dies: Doyle understood the commercial appeal of the character as a means to bury his creation, but he was a better writer than the sort who would actually turn the series into a march toward a showdown between Holmes and a single crook.

The one thing about this game I hated is the fact that when you first see the murderer that everyone is talking about, I immediately said "This is the guy right? It has to be this guy that's the killer because of exhibit A: Backstory plot detail 1" and then the characters completely fail to connect the dots, despite the fact that he's wearing a lampshade on his metaphorical head. By the time Cole actually figures it out it isn't a satisfying conclusion, it's me going "No shit, Sherlock, do you want a cookie now?". It didn't even give me the satisfaction of being able to say "I told you so."

Except without the clever writing, interesting characters, and personality. The Ace Attorney games give you clues as to when you should ignore a piece of testimony, press for more info, or to contradict the witness's testimony. My issue with the game is that sometimes you would have two clear samples of evidence that could contradict what the witness was saying, but only one would work. Sometimes it was the item that would be least important. Second mission I was interragating this one guy. "You have no proof that I'm involved!" Ok... here. What about this rape tape I picked up that you clearly had some sort of involvement with. "I'm not talking anymore." Wait what? Um.. ok... how about these pills that we found? "Oh! You got me!" But yeah, it does that a lot. "What proof do you have that I know about this numbers racket!?" Uh...how about the numbers racket ticket I found in your hidey hole? But then I realized there were three damn listings for numbers racket tickets in the clue book, without much information on which was which. So I ended up using the existence of the numbers racket I had told him about as evidence that he was aware of the numbers racket I had told him about. Beautiful in a tautological sense, but apparently not the right answer.

***** But in a lot of cases you have to guess in order to get the correct response, which is sort of intentional, I think, since you're supposed to go on "intuition," but the end result is that you often have to take a shot in the dark, which isn't really a test of real skill. Often it is ambiguous whether you are supposed to doubt or believe someone. And in the end your skills don't amount to anything except how many points you get, except a select few cases where you get yelled at in case you did badly, which still does not affect the overall story. It also has serious flaws as a crime investigation game, since often there is no real thought or logic involved in figuring out who is the perpetrator. You just follow a trail of obvious clues, and sometimes the real perpetrator is not even introduced until the very end of the case. The entire homicide desk is the worst, since there is no way to figure out the perpetrator until the final mission, and there practically no ties to the previous cases, except that you feel confirmed in your feeling that the cases were all shaky and there was a lot of evidence unaccounted for, which renders pretty much all your investigation up until that point irrelevant.

I love this game to bits, and I sort of understand why Cole is so hard and unforgiving in accusations, he's a war veteran that's seen some traumatic shit, I don't think he's gonna play tootsie foot fuck around with the boarding home owner because she doesn't want her reputation spoiled. I did have a problem when somebody actually didn't really answer the question, and I still had to see if they were lying or not, so I could only sit there like.."er..doubt?"

I like LA Noire. Yeah, it had it's shortcomings, but it gave me a much higher respect for policemen and veterans in the end. I also get why people are frustrated with it, though. You kinda have to make your fun in that game, too. Pro Tip: Push people down stairs.

Make your own fun? I don't understand...I mean I love the game quite a bit with the flaws mostly revolving around interrogations, but it legitimately kept me guessing and you do have to pay attention. (It hurts when you get a question wrong). I love the setting(mostly because I'm a history buff so there's bias) and the city is really authentic. I do wish there were more to it, though. All that space, all these buildings, and you can't do much extra stuff. Also, it makes driving a chore.

What I found weird was they spent ages building this through line of the serial killer you were hunting, and I was super satisfied when I finally caught him and assumed the game was going to end. But then it turned out it was only half way through.
@cathallynch8269
@cathallynch8269 Жыл бұрын
Apparently they cocked that up and the serial killer was meant to run through the entire game but for some reason got haphazardly changed. I was always baffled by how quickly they swept the serial killer under the rug with the relation to a highly elected official.

If I've understood correctly, reason Cole goes batshit insane when doubting is because Doubt option used to be something like Intimidate and it was later changed to doubt, while Coles reactions still go with Intimidate option.

L.A. Noire was supposed to be a homage to a genre of films (almost entirely set in the 1940-50s) in which everything is shades of grey. That's why they tried bulling you into picking the pedophile instead of the husband (who, although there was reason to doubt it was him, but the case was a little more convincing.) to give you a feel for the police force at the time. And the ending was pretty much how all those movies ended. Massive shoot out, the "bad guys" are dead, and the "hero" is dead, dying, behind bars, or even more pessimistic about life than Kurt Cobain.
@spaceawesome22
@spaceawesome22 10 жыл бұрын
Uh, being badgered into accusing the pedophile isn't really all that morally gray, but yes, it does draw you more into the setting and establish the somewhat odd logic that the police dep't of that era ran on.
@GrimImpaler
@GrimImpaler 10 жыл бұрын
Wait, so letting a murderer go free to put another morally reprehensible person in jail is morally gray? That's black and white to you?
@spaceawesome22
@spaceawesome22 10 жыл бұрын
GrimImpaler Moral ambiguity is about characters doing bad things for good reasons, or doing good things for less than noble reasons, or instances where both sides have good reasons for conflicting with each other. None of that applies here, though. This isn't a case of the police choosing the lesser of two evils; this is the police (sans Cole) letting their own biases influence their judgment. Simply being flat-out bad at your job has nothing to do with morality.
@GrimImpaler
@GrimImpaler 10 жыл бұрын
It is picking between two evils and by the numbers, the lesser of two evils was let free. They let a killer go t get a repeat child molester of the streets and locked up for good. How is that not moral ambiguity?
@spaceawesome22
@spaceawesome22 10 жыл бұрын
GrimImpaler Okay, after a glance at the LA Noire wiki, I can see I just remembered the case wrong. For some reason, I remembered it as the cops just jumping to conclusions and basically saying, "Eli's a child molester? Well, clearly he's also the killer!" I forgot about when Rusty points out to Cole that it's "better for everyone" if Eli is the one charged. My bad.

This is still my favorite Yahtzee review because he nails exactly what is wrong with this game. Yes, it does seem like it favors detective work over straight gunplay at first, but so many plot and character developments are so nonsensical that it all falls apart by the end of the game. A strange, yet interesting development in modern game design.

They should have made it so that doubt and lying tie in. Like if somebody is lying and you hit doubt, it should open up a new lead, one harder to follow than the one you would get if you correctly called out a lie, and your case rating is affected.
