Not at all. Only high classes could afford to listen to what we call classical music today. Boccherini was different in making music for common people, but the popular music of the time was folk songs and the use of simple, affordable instruments.

The thing that's so great about this choice of song. Es tán hermosa esta Música del Nocturno de las calles de Madrid, que aún no sé cómo no es aún nuestro HIMNO de nuestra Comunidad. Boccherini eligió Madrid como su ciudad y esta música fue su regalo. Boccherini was twenty years old musician and arrived Madrid with the brother ( Luis) of the new king ( Charles III was the new King of Spaniard empire coming from Napoles) and died in Madrid more than 40 years later. He never live in Italy again. This song was published in Valladolid after he died. The music is a compound of an ancient " Jota Castellana", called at that time " Fandango" ( Not the modern fandango)

Il Grande Re Carlo III di Borbone. prima di essere sovrano di Spagna ( alla morte del padre Filippo V), è stato il fondatore della dinastia Borbone ramo di Napoli. Egli governò mirabilmente il Regno di Napoli e Sicilia ( ritornati finalmente indipendenti, dopo 250 anni di dominio asburgico spagnolo) dal 1735 al 1759. Da tale data lasciò Napoli al figlioletto Ferdinando IV di 8 anni, (sostenuto dal Consiglio di Reggenza, che avrebbe governato fino al raggiungimento della maggior età) per succedere al trono di Spagna , alla morte del padre, Filippo V.

In this piece he pays tribute to many of its aspects. We have religious references, a military march, the music of blind beggars and street singers. With his great training and skills he dignifies this music while at the same time showing how the refined music of his day had its birth in the music of the streets.

Además, hay muchos escritores italianos de la Edad Media y el Renacimiento que hablan explícitamente de "Italia" en sus obras, por lo que ya en aquella época existía la idea de que el territorio en el que vivía la gente era Italia. Y también hay escritores italianos que hablan de lo mucho que lamentaban que Italia estuviera bajo el yugo de naciones extranjeras, especialmente de España.

Por demás, Italia no existía desde la edad media, sino desde el imperio romano. E italianos eran los naturales de esa región y podían adoptar la ciudadanía romana si el senado lo aceptaba. Como los hispanos. Habitantes de las provincias hispanas. También existía España en la edad media aunque no oirás hablar de españoles hasta el renacimiento. El reino de Italia no nace hasta la edad media como VASALLO del Sacro Imerio Romano Germánico y se limita a zonas del norte de Italia. Y duró poco. Junto con la república veneciana. El sur eran estados vaticanos y luego el gran reino de Napoles. El único que se lamentó del yugo de naciones extrangeras fué Maquiavelo, pero léelo con atención y te darás cuenta de que expresa la frustración de un Florentino porque los demás italianos no le hacían ni piiiii caso. Sobre todo tras el saco de Roma. Que hay que leerlo. Y que haya tantos italianos, más bien napolitanos y genoveses en las aventuras españolas te da una idea de como se sentían las naciones y la opresiones y los nacionalismos en la Italia de esos siglos. Tienes un problema psicológico, y es que has mamado la historia mundial recreada por los románticos del siglo XIX, nacionalista y acrítica, muy emotiva y poco objetiva pero muy, muy, muy...pues eso. Romántica. Por cierto, una historia que esconde la devastación del sur por el norte que supuso la unificación garibaldina. Una burrada. Y no faltan motivos para sentirse orgulloso de ser italiano. Pero ser italiano, per sé, como ser simplemente español, solo sería motivo de orgullo para un hortera y un tiffosi. Pero no para un CIUDADANO.

I think it's simultaneously a great thing, and a terrible shame, that 99.9% of people only know this beautiful piece of music because of a Russel Crowe movie. It's great that people are showing any kind of interest in this exquisite baroque music, I don't care HOW you found out about it. But it's sad that nobody seems to care about this timeless art until a movie shoves it in their face.

Guess not, but it seems music should speak for itself and not in the context of a "movie". But at least films might inspire people to get into a piece of music otherwise not discovered. Just feels cheap to me. The same as when people have monologues in youtube comments. No original content is all.

Monsieur, je ne partage pas votre opinion. Boccherini est peut-être moins connu mais il est loin d'être considéré "underated". Pour beaucoup, Boccherini est parmi les plus grands compositeurs avec Haydn et Beethoven. Toutefois, les opinions différentes sont à la base du développement de la culture.
