Some interesting facts about the movie: 1. Russell Crowe learned to play violin for the film and referred to it as the hardest thing he'd ever done for a film. 2. This film was intended to be the first entry in a franchise. However, due to low box-office numbers, no sequels were ever made, despite critical acclaim and multiple Oscar nominations. 3. The movie combines two novels - "Master and Commander" and "The Far Side of the World". Both deal with chasing down a privateer and the movie combines the long chase of the latter with the furious climactic battle of the former 4. Paul Bettany was one of the few actors who did not get seasick during filming. He was a member of Sea Cadets as a kid. Any others you know? 5. In Patrick O'Brian's novel on which the film is based, the enemy ship was the Norfolk, an American ship; but in the Hollywood version, it has changed nationality: it is the Acheron, a French frigate. Perfect occasion to add french bashing after their refusal to support the intervention in Iraq
@Swarm50910 ай бұрын
@@ouient It is possibly done to bash the French in that modern way too but I heard it was so it did not alienate American audiences with them being the "bad guys" in the movie. Very common thing to happen with movies when "America" is in this position in a film, the producers and marketers think Americans are dumb enough to hate a movie because of them being the villains and will refuse to see it or blacklist it. Luckily in this movie the French worked out perfectly well, and there are still comments about the ship being American made as a callback to the original books. Plus the American's were very pro French at this time period so they may build and sell them a ship (even though America needed every ship they could at the time).

@Nordmann1377 I think you are absolutely right. Each moment is measured, precise and beautiful. There's brutality but it's not fantasy. There may be a few but generally young people and any 'twitching' adults are not interested in this archaic way of life which they don't see as relevant to any facet of British life. There is no entitlement...but continual duty, forbearance, honour and then more duty. Sadly all gone, never to return I think. The film is riveting...every nuance, every glance is pregnant with meaning. It's the same everytime I watch it and some parts are so very hard to keep watching. And then there's the divine uplifting music. We won't see films like this again I fear.

My favorite movie, more like a documentary than your typical Hollywood blockbuster that lacks depth and detail. I only have two points of criticism, one minor and one major: Minor: the casting of Billy Boyd, a distraction due to his recent LotR fame and somewhat breaks the immersion for me Major: I understand that the story was altered to a conflict with a French frigate rather than an American. This is an unfortunate concession to the US market and should not have been done. Also, unlike other viewers, I am glad that a sequel was never made. The high quality of M & C would have been almost impossible to maintain. They would have risked and possibly watered down what they had already accomplished. Like Metropolis, Apocalypse Now, The Shawshank Redemption etc., this one works best as a standalone movie IMO.

In a previous incarnation, I was a ship's surgeon who became a pirate surgeon. That life was in the 18th Century, (I died in 1722 in that life, at the age of 25), but this is not too different from the life I remember. I remember travelling to Brazil and seeing the Amazon Rainforest and the natives who lived there, including the Medicine Men. Also (of course) the Caribbean, the tribes who lived there and the colonists who risked all to build a New Life in the New World! One thing that disgusted me and helped to lead me into a life of Piracy was the terrible conditions aboard the Slavers, both for the slaves and for the crew! Guess who had to treat their ailments and witnessed the absolutely unconscionable mortality rates among both crew and "cargo"? 30% death rate was completely acceptable, but even a 50% death rate was considered normal! Nobody would have wept over a single man going overboard, especially if the alternative was to lose the entire ship! That is my one quibble with this movie, the scene where they have to cut the mast loose and the sailor is washed away to oblivion. The whole ship mourns, whereas in reality, nobody would have blinked an eye at this loss! Some ships were better, others worse, but the average was pretty low. There were certainly captains like "Lucky Jack" and ships where losing lives was the exception rather than the norm, but these were not so common as we all would hope. That said, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this movie! This, and Francis Ford Coppola's "Kidnapped" are two of the most accurate film depictions of life at sea during the Golden Age of Sail (18th and 19th Centuries).
