Love the Sendak!

Sendak designed one of the earliest productions, before I believe he wrote Where the Wild Things Are This work is inspired by the useless insanity of WW1, an experience he shared with Colette and Ravel

Why no boy soprano??? Try harder! Boy sopranos are seldom used or even heard!

Ravel wrote the role for a mezzo soprano, it's a pants role, which is very common in opera. a boy soprano would not have the vocal range and dexterity required.

If memory serves, Balanchine's version of this work uses both a boy alto as well as boy dancer. He could do this because his School of American Ballet is and was set up for this.

There are boy sopranos in this ! I was one of them! We sang the numbers and I was the butterfly and shepherd boy. Fantastic production, amazing memories. They showed this filmed version on BBC2 at Christmas that year. Great memories.
