Interesting. Looks as though there are both types of rear doors, but sadly no option in the roof transparencies for the AF120 sight which, if the provide SS11 as an option, you would need. Actually you could use the flot gear with the Scout but it needs the roof escape hatch. The ground handling wheels are rarely taken off to be honest. Nice to see litters. You could actually use the Wasp boom for a prototype Scout.

Currently available for £30 but it wants to be half decent. I can comment on this as I work with what is possibly the most authentic example of the Scout...about. I see that they are producing a resin engine and primarily gearbox which is nice, particularly if it fits the old Airfix heap. The problem is that the Nimbus needs tubes, high and low pressure oil, P2 air and fuel....then the electrics harness. All doable even in braille scale (to a point) but the Queen of the skies really deserves 1:48. I have ordered 2 and a Wasp. One Scout will go to a pilot friend so we will see.

PS. Nice review Phil but I agree. The Scout first lifted in 58 on a parallel sort of track with the early UH1s. It is shocking that there have never been 1:48 versions of the Scout or the Wasp, and apart from the now lost Kittyhawk UH1, the majority of the UH1s are franken-hueys with bits and bats near beer but not right. The Army started battlefield aviation so a bit of recognition wouldn't go badly. One observation with this Scout I missed earlier (and they have carried the error onto their resin Nimbus which worries a bit) is that the front end of the oil cooler (long hairdryer left of the engine) has a large inward turned air exhaust and not the bullet shape presented. Easy fix but it will be very visible. Phil, the engraved lines on the engine deck (basically a flying stainless steel drip tray) are representing strips on grip tape (usually emerald green or black) sealed with PRC compound (usually a pale chocolate brown). Happy masking that lot. Actually it was also moulded on the airfix jobby.

Airfix have missed a trick by not issuing this in 1/48. The Merlin (Meh), the new Sea King (Lovely), a Puma would be the icing on the cake. But this little kit certainly brings back memories, I was one year old when the Airfix kit was released, so it's definitely time for a new one.

Nice kit review of a personal favourite aircraft. As a youngster, I always wanted a 1/72 scale Wasp and lobbied Airfix, in vain, with letters to produce one. I am all for a 1/48 scale of both Scout and Wasp, but not at the expense of the 1/72 scale kits. Maybe this release will stir Airfix to up their game and actually release - at least - a retooled Scout, plus a first ever Wasp. Surely someone there must understand that modellers who buy kits of the Lynx, Seaking, etc., would also want to complete the nostalgic British naval helicopter stable?

Great review. I really would like to get one of these like you said, the old airfix kit is long in the tooth.

Looks nice for sure but really should have been to 1/48. Just too small for '72. Nice artwork, agreed, but not as evocative as Roy Cross' depicting an army Scout skimming over the turret of a Centurion. Just mo. Come on Airfix, a quarter scale Scout, if you please and while you're at it, a Gazelle would be good too. 😉🤞

Amen to all of that. I invited them to Wallop and they didn't seem to achieve much. They updated the scheme on their Beaver while missing a chance of adding vinpan pods and covering a Banner aircraft....just like the one they were looking at. Re Gazelle....couldn't agree more as the current Hella/KP boxing is wildly inaccurate (even for an 80s cab) and the markings for the AH1 never existed. They were taken from an owner of an HT2 that wanted an AH1 so retained the reg and sprayed her green and grey....so much for research

What a shame... Think I need to find Fujimi ’67 Wasp 1/50 instead.

I would have thought a new tool kit should be pin sharp and flash free, and at forty quid or so! Hmmmmm...
