We hear this a lot from our friends - our Cantonese is very fluent, but we speak it with a peculiar accent and use funny phrases that even Macau Locals rarely hear! That’s why today we’re going to sit down and talk about how Cantonese is spoken by the true Macanese!

They are speaking a little bit of "weitou" with portugese ! This is not just cantonese ! lol..... Cos I would say that ! "oi mm oi"....means "do you want it " ??? I don't think that this is exactly wrong as such. They sound a little bit hakka... but I know that it isn't so though. lol... But I bet that, with Macau being such a small community, all it takes is for a single person to adopt a style.. and then the whole community follows that same style of speech. This was how HK's NT side lost their weitou speech as well...

The influence appears to be from the 石岐 branch of Cantonese, where people (albeit the older ones) still say 一兜褲 even today. The original inhabitants of Macau came mostly from that area, so that’s what they would have spoken as well. I think a lot of us are so used to thinking of Cantonese as the language used in Hong Kong or Guangzhou that we forget it’s actually a very broad category with different regional variations and sub-branches. What we recognise today as “Standard Cantonese” likely only became a thing with the rise of the HK entertainment industry, probably in the 80s. Likewise, quite a few other posters have mentioned the similar use of Cantonese in areas like 珠海 and 順德as well. By the way, the 圍頭話 you mention is also classified under the 莞保 branch, i.e. 東莞 and 保安 branches of Cantonese. Great discussion and interesting insight into the use and development of a language!

@@adelylt6613 : Her " 食 hau ?" = 吃後味 ? = "Have you eaten?" Or "食後味 ?" There could be this possibilities because... there was an actual "literary society" that was created in HK around the latter years of 1800s. And at that time, the diplomats wanted to actually raise the standard of the language and the people's education level. So this is why... the hans character "吃" (more of a literary word and written form) is different to today's modern "speaking form" aka "白話 " . (And right now, in 2023.. I bet the language is disappearing once again.. because, depending on who is being in those educational boards and in position of powers.. Those words.. and those kind of differentiation is going to disappear as well ? Some speech now online and from netizens have now embedded different mandarin/shanghainese-Manchurian-mongolian words and phrases into HK's speech. That is, if you know those tones and words to begin with. ) .... Whereas... for the English language, in the past 30-40 years... they already reclassified what is considered as "Modern English language"... and what was "traditional literary work".... I don't think that.. what the education board wanted to do in HK.. is reaching its potential though. i.e. To preserve heritages.. AS well...AS... document it, with history embedded AS part of it. It is like chasing its tails... "By the way, the 圍頭話 you mention is also classified under the 莞保 branch, i.e. 東莞 and 保安 branches of Cantonese. "

@@MeiinUK Thank you for your response! It’s really cool to hear from others who speak/take an interest in Cantonese and all its various forms. For the record, I am not even Macanese. Just a boring Singaporean of Chinese ethnicity who happens to love languages, linguistics, history - and especially the confluence of all three, which is why I spend way more time reading about the things we are discussing here than I should. 😝 The other point I should mention is that I don’t speak Cantonese fluently at all. 🤣 My ancestry is Hokkien and Teochew - and I do not speak either of these well, owing to Singapore’s bilingual education policy which emphasises the teaching of Mandarin (for Chinese-Singaporeans) alongside English. There was also an unfortunate ban on the public broadcast of Southern Chinese dialects for a good part of the last three decades. That said, I have no trouble understanding most spoken Cantonese, thanks to my diet of Cantopop songs/movies/TV growing up in the 90s. These were delivered through cable TV, which the government had no control over. My aural comprehension of Hokkien is even worse than Cantonese, and my Teochew is practically non-existent. I guess that makes me spiritually Cantonese? 🤔

Not hakka, it's "圍頭話"..... Hek Fan Mm Chan. Oi Mm Oi. (Have you eaten ? Do you want it?) I think their perception of the "cantonese" were really, the earlier migrants from the NT side.. into Macau... so it is indeed an earlier form of cantonese speech... cos those individuals were an older settler groups.. around at least 300-500 or so period before the British colonial trades and things. Some academics are now saying that, those individuals were exactly documented in the various British documents.. but I presume that, they would've been part of the Canton provincial documents or other. I dunno...

As some others have pointed out, the variation of Cantonese they speak is also used in places like 珠海 and 顺德. I believe it’s from from the 石岐 branch of Cantonese - incidentally, Sun Yat Sen’s dialect. The earliest inhabitants into Macau were from that area, so it’s unsurprising that they use the regional dialect. Standard Cantonese may be common nowadays, but it only became a thing with the rise of the HK entertainment industry. The other thing is that as Portuguese descendants, many of the Macanese didn’t undertake formal Chinese schooling (as Mina mentioned). They learnt how to speak from the people around them.

@@adelylt6613 : Oic.. I never knew that of Macau's past heritages and things like that.... and I noticed for definite that you guys have a very prominent Dutch ancestry in your facial feastures. (Apparently.. some people in HK now... were also because of: 1) Northern Chinese-Americans (from manchurian roots during Qing dynasties) and 2) post the Qing's-American work.. the British brought Armenians into HK as well. So some are actually Armenian-Cantonese. And do not forget that.. there were the guy... that SCMP guy.. who was from Hoiping.... Tse Tsan-tai (謝纘泰)... He started a literary club of sorts. To get people educated basically. That was before the boom of the trading sector via the British.. and then those merchants used their taxes to create schools... more really for the purpose of trading.. and inter-country diplomacies... But both the traders' descendents, and the local kids benefitted in the end any way. FYI. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furen_Literary_Society en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tse_Tsan-tai By the way. Apparently.... to be able to "read and write" was not actually common, even as dated far back as 1800s. Somebody told me this in recent years... in the UK, she came from HK. I said that this was not possible. But I believe her now. Why this was so ? Cos china still ran the Imperial Civil Service Examination then. So... if you are not chosen to read and write. Then you are not chosen. So this is why many people went to the arts. i.e. Performances etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_examination en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_occupations
