Hi Ivy Leung, I'm a native catalan-speaker but when I been in Galicia I learned Galician (it's a language closer to portuguese o directly is the portuguese from Galicia) and I can understand 85% (aproximately) of Macauan Patuá. The sog Macau sâm Assi is really funny and illustrative, and it's subtitled in English, Portuguese and Chinese (Chinese and Cantones have an unificated writting, aren't they?)

The biggest Cantonese-speaking region, Hong Kong, uses traditional characters. In Macau they're also traditional, as well as Taiwan, but in Taiwan most speak Mandarin. The People's Republic of China simplified Chinese writing and all languages spoken in the country now use simplified characters (except Hong Kong and Macau, because they have only returned to being a part of China recently).

@@biginjapan89 The biggest Cantonese-speaking region is Guangdong province which have the population more than 100 million and more than half of them use Cantonese as their mother tongue, while the provincial capital of Guangdong province is Canton city where Cantonese originated.

@@burgeeneansa3526 I'm surprised to hear that. I travelled along the Delta region and I heard mostly mandarin, outside of HK and Macau. Since that region had such a boom, I guess many people have close origins with other parts of China. Maybe I didn't notice the cantonese-speaking population, but they're probably in other parts of Guangdong that didn't see that much change. I have to look into that.

@@biginjapan89 Since 1980s, numerous mandarin speakers came from north to Guangdong province to seek their fortune because of the accelerating development in Pearl River Delta Bay Area which is the most developed region in mainland China , as a native Cantonese speaker from Canton city , I suppose the northerners have immensely damage our local culture. However, Cantonese(广东人,canton-people)still dominating a large part of population in Guangdong province.I just wandering if you can distinguish Cantonese from Mandarin exactly.

@@burgeeneansa3526 I don't know how to speak proper Mandarin, even less Cantonese, I just know a few phrases and expressions. Are there many 广东语 accents? I think the Cantonese in HK and Macau is very musical, fiercely intonanted, like a drawl. I find it recognisable. Mandarin seems more light, but Beijing mandarin sounds very noble, with words intercut. Of course if you speak Cantonese very quickly and muffle the accent maybe I won't tell a difference. Not for long, I'm learning!
