I’ve got a Genesis and the micarta handle is perfectly fine. I agree that it is hard to do feather sticks with the knife. It cuts too aggressively unless I am very careful and patient. They come from the factory with a micro-bevel, not a zero grind.

I can't stand slick handles on that style of knife . I'm thinking about making a Brisa Kephart from one of their blanks this month . I sometimes use True Oil for Gunstocks on my wood handles . It sets with a softer, more grippy texture, and I don't polish to a super shine. I just buff it a bit with a rag. Micarta is still my material of choice , ya just can't beat a nice unpolished micarta grip.

Why do I get Mors vibes from everything you do and demonstrate? Only other person I get the same vibes off of is Cody Lundin. I’ll bet that his Genesis has micarta scales. As beautiful as the ironwood scales are, they just won’t be as grippy. Other than that, how did you find the scales? We’re they too thin or square? That’d be a design issue derived from its Kephart origins. Sounds like you didn’t like the high grind and thin stock, either. I think a lot of LT’s small to medium sized knives use 1/8 inch stock…too bad, this kind of put me off from getting one.

Nice, Rob! 👍 The Genesis was my first L.T. Wright knife from many years ago. Green micarta in A2 steel. Good knife but not a great one. I’ve always loved the handle, but the blade bites too much, which isn’t always a good thing. The 6” Larry Roberts edition performs the same-good, but not great and even less so than the standard Genesis. IMO, 6” is just too much blade for the Genesis.
@RobEvansWoodsman
@RobEvansWoodsman 9 ай бұрын
I don't know what made them think that a 6" blade scandi was a good idea . This knife has a large following, I hope one day my MK1 or MK2 get that many fans!
@blackhawkbushcraft
@blackhawkbushcraft 9 ай бұрын
@@RobEvansWoodsman Totally agree. My only question is where the heck were you and your knives to save me from significant buyers remorse? 😆 I remember Larry talking about the Gen 6 in a video when he worked with LT on the project and wanting the length at 6” to improve batoning capability. I think, however, that only increasing the blade length and leaving everything else exactly the same as the standard Genesis reduced the knife’s overall functionality. After using it for the first time, my thoughts were that it wasn’t even that great of a batoning knife and less effective at working wood than the standard Genesis. They should have gone with thicker blade stock, a high saber grind, and a profile with more belly. I was disappointed, especially since a $40 SRK ran circles around it in overall performance. 😄 The Gen 6 has a big following, but I question how many owners are really fans of it and happy with the purchase? At close to $300USD, for me it really is just a spendy collection piece than a great tool. Hey, how about we do this? I’ll trade you my Gen 6 collecting dust in my bag of knives that rarely see the light of day for an MK2 that will actually get used? 😆 I have an MK1 on order already, but will trade for a second one if needed. 😉😁

Hello again friend. I wonder if you are aware that the genesis is a design that l.t. wright brought with him from blind horse knives . When blind horse knives split as a partnership they turned into of course l.t. wright knives and battle horse knives. Battle horse kept design as well a d call it the smoky mountain razor. I have had both. I sold my genesis because the smoky mountain razor came with a zero scandi, and better handle geometry/ ergonomics. My opinion . The .blade shape is exactly the same.
@JackWorster
@JackWorster 10 ай бұрын
Forgot to mention the smoky mountain razor came in 01 tool steel, another reason I chose it over genesis. Also, the handle on the smoky mountain razor comes in micarta, I got the satin instead of polished. It is great in all weather, rain, sweat etc. Side thought about your ferro rod issue on sheath. If you have a "lanyard hole" on your fire steel, use a hair elastic in place of lanyard, you can then stretch it over rod itself resting between sheath and rod an it locks it in sheath.

@@HankSielski it is not cheap,monetarily, but it is well made and I can attest, I gave it many a hard task, camping , fire making, shelter building, cooking lol, batons without worry, chops an carvs like blues twice and half the size... I gave it an orange juice patina to protect against rust and polished the cutting bevel with a strop and bark river white compound to learn the skill of stropping... I've used it for oh, 3 or 4 years. It never dulled, only became sharper through stropping, light, not agressive stropping, due to zero edge from battle horse. No secondary bevel, not yet at least...
